There is no question to it that the Chiefs are at least 2 years away from a Super Bowl. With the unbelievable 2010 draft past us here are some needs that the chiefs must address, in order of importance, either in the remainder of Free Agency or in the 2011 Draft.
1. NT:There are 2 reasons to put this at #1
first, is that in order to run a proper 3-4 defense you need a nose, and frankly we don't have a long term solution there. Shaun Smith is average at best, and Ron Edwards is a 4-3 tackle.
Secondly, is a financial reason. We are paying a lot of money to Dorsey and Jackson. Without a proper nose, they will have a much reduced effect without a nose. A nose tackle will accelarate their progress and our defenses.
2. ILB:
We need a captain of the defense. We need someone on the field that will do more than just tackle. We need someone who can call audibles, read offenses, and be a presence on and off the field. DJ is average, but has trouble getting on the field. Mays and Williams can tackle, but we need someone who can do more than that.
3. WR:
This goes without saying. We only have 2 noteworthy receivers on the team. One of them has the IQ of toast, and the other is past his prime and starting to show his age. We need someone to catch the ball, especially since we led the league in drops last year. A game changing receiver not only makes Matt Cassel better, but it makes our entire offense better.
4. Interior Lineman:
There is no doubt that our line got a lot better this offseason, but there is still a lot of work to do. We may have found a gem in the rough with O'Callahan at tackle, but our guards and centers are in trouble. Waters is the only surefire lineman we have. Lilja is good when healthy, and that is his only concern. Asamoah looks like he can replace waters in a few years which is good, but we still have no long term center is place. Niswanger is mediocre, and if we plan on running the ball often, which it looks like we do, we need someone to call protection schemes. Weigman was a great pickup, but only a 1 year solution.
