Missed opportunity to meet Tony Gonzalez
(link to event article in title)
I commute an hour+ (each way) everyday through heavy traffic from work to home. Close to home, I received a text last night from my boss "Do you know who Tony Gonzalez is?! He's at Borders signing a book" *facepalm* This was literally right across the street from where I work...my favorite player of all time was a stones throw away...
If I could have met him yesterday, I would have asked him to return to the Chiefs. I have no hard feelings on what he did by requesting a trade. I know he speaks great things about the Falcons, but I think it's a show of respect to his current team and nothing personal towards the Chiefs. He didn't want to go through a rebuilding phase because Carl Peterson already wore him out on that. I don't blame him. Now that the Chiefs' outlook looks much more promising, I would think he could really tip the scales on this team to be a better contender than the Falcons.
I wanted to know if you met Tony Gonzalez today, what would you tell him or talk about with him?

I would ask him one question
How is it going to feel watching the Chiefs win a Superbowl in the next 3 years while you are sitting at home in Atlanta?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Word. I love him, but I totally want him to fail in Atlanta haha
Other Arenas wish they could be like Arrowhead Stadium as it prepares to turn a new Page on Chiefs legacy. Rivals think they are going to be fine on an island of Flowers, but when they get hit by what feels like a Carr, they'll never be able to eat a Berry ever again.
I understand why he wanted to go ...
but he wanted to leave our team to achieve a personal goal (win a SB). That’s fine, but if he is done with us then I’m done with him.
I understand your point of view...
However, for a lot of great players, the Superbowl is that one thing to cap a great career. It’s like the end-game or highest level. He’s broken so many records and became the best tight end in history. He works himself so hard to reach the highest level of greatness and to most, they need that Superbowl ring to reach that final peak. I can’t blame him for trying to be the best he can be in life and his career. That’s the kind of player you want on your team.
With Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards trying to rebuild but regressing and then having the front office implode to bring in Pioli and Haley, it’s only natural to think another rebuilding phase was coming. At his age, he couldn’t go through more growing pains of a rebuilding team. Being a mentally strong person to start off with, can you really blame him for finally cracking and agreeing to not stick it through another rebuilding phase? A 4-12 then 2-14 season with some heartbreaking losses (see KC @ SD where they “play to win the game”) can be really disheartening. He was tearing up on the sidelines after the loss. Tears of frustration. He’s only human in the end.
He’s loyal to his current team, but I know he can’t forget the 12 years in KC where he made a name for himself. Him leaving KC shouldn’t be taken personally. Being loyal to a fault is a foolish thing to do.

I live in LA County and 20 minutes away from Downtown :]

Dang
Had I known I would have made the drive to the OC to meet him.
If I did meet him, well, first off this book is awesome. It’s always inspiring to see men act like men and be fathers to their children (even if they are only girls…lol). Second I would thank him for all he did in KC and I would wish him the best of luck in getting to the SB and also ask if he regretted the decision in hindsight (seeing as I do believe KC will make it to the SB before ATL).
No hard feelings here...
I respect Tony G as a person but I too want him to fail in ATL! I do, however, look forward to him retiring as a Chief. Can’t blame him at all for wanting to leave, but he may have been better off staying with KC!
As far as the question I would ask him.....
I would pose as an Oakland fan and ask him if he respects the Raiders franchise. If he said yes, I would have to slap him and walk away with disgust. No respect from there on out!
