The Dog Days

The top eight players have historically received contracts matching top veteran salaries due to the fact that they are predicted to be impact starters. The rest of the draft, however, is a bargain for management relative to the contract amounts given to the drafted rookies.
Safeties
Player Total
Bob Sanders $8,209,999
Troy Polamalu $6,820,000
Roy L. Williams $6,667,385
Madieu Williams $5,271,666
Adrian Wilson $4,739,499
» Franchise: $6.34 million.
Darren Sharper $4,150,000
Chris Hope $4,000,002
Michael Lewis $3,905,000
Corey Chavous $3,800,000
Rodney Harrison $3,731,769
» Transition: $5.13 million.
The signing of Antrell Rolle blew up that pay for Safeties. Or not.
Yet, Eric Berry will be payed like the best at the position. The #5 pick in 2009 was a QB so I went with the slotting for the 6th drafted player Offensive Tackle Andre Smith
The four-year deal includes $21 million guaranteed. The team has an option after the 2010 season that would turn it into a six-year, $42 million deal that includes $29.5 million guaranteed. Heyward-Bey got a five-year deal with $23.5 million guaranteed from the Raiders.
What's up with the other top 2010 NFL draft picks negotiations? Not much yet.
1 Rams Sam Bradford QB
The Rams in particular have budgeted for paying the No. 1 overall choice. They will want Bradford in camp. Bradford will want to be in camp. I would expect a deal to get done in time for Bradford to report on time or close to it. Meanwhile, teams continue to sign players drafted after the first two rounds.
2 Lions Ndamukong Suh DT
Suh has participated in OTAs, but his agent, Eugene Parker, has remained tight-lipped about how big a contract they are negotiating with the Lions. As a basis for comparison, OT Jason Smith, the No. 2 pick in the 2009 draft, signed a six-year, $61.775 million contract with St. Louis, which included $33 million guaranteed. Parker has a history of having his clients hold out, most recently WR Michael Crabtree
3 Buccaneers Gerald McCoy DT
The negotiating typically starts at the same level as the player picked in the same spot last year. In this case, that's the Chiefs' Tyson Jackson, who was the third overall pick in 2009 out of LSU. He eventually signed a five-year, $57 million contract with $31 million in guarantees. The previous year, Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan, also a No. 3 pick, signed a $72 million with $34 million guaranteed. His deal, however, covered six years -- not five.
4 Redskins Trent Williams OT
That's because Williams fired his agent this week and currently has no representation. The move was first reported by Comcast SportsNet's Kelli Johnson.
"I don't even know if they started negotiations yet," Williams said Thursday after practice. Which makes sense, considering the big left tackle is stuck between agents and can't negotiate his rookie contract without representation. When a player switches agents, NFL Players Association rules require him to wait five days before hiring a new one.
Kansas City this might be a problem. If the 4th pick and last years 5th was a QB, the slotting might get a little dicey.
5 Chiefs Eric Berry SS
Nothing, Nada, and Zilch. Which is all good as long as the next thing we here on this subject is Berry signs a contract for x Million for x Years :)
6 Seahawks Russell Okung OT
With all that happening in farthest corner of the states the Seahawks are at it again with the possiblity of Bills running back Marshawn Lynch heading to Seattle if the Bills are willing to strike a dead with the Hawks’. Also out in New England restricted free agent guard Logan Mankins has requested a trade and with the Seahawks still seeking upgrades on the offensive line would Mankins be a fit in Seattle?
Paul Allen has not been shy this off-season and is also being linked to Atogwe now. I don't imagine a few extra million thrown on a contract for the Left Tackle spot worries Pete Carroll. He probably paid that much at USC :)

I can't see one having too much of an effect on the other ...
traditionally it’s like dominoes … usually bottom up: 10th pick signs, 9th pick signs for a little more, 8th pick signs for little more still … eventually you have an Armored Truck driving up to the stadium and half dozen armed guards get out, surrounding the agent with pen in hand, heading up to see the GM

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Well :)
As Condon said: The top 8 picks are expected to be impact starters in the NFL.
The man knows and Berry will have an impact and he will start.
Much has been said over the last few days regarding Jarrad Page 7th round pick.
He plays well and he doesn’t play well yet he is a 7th round draft pick.
As far as the money: it ain’t mine, it will never be mine, and why should I care who has it if it ain’t mine? I got what I need and that is all ever ask for anyway. You need to come back to KC so I can buy you some BBQ :) The printers are a never ending plague on my life now :(

but you LOVE that plague ... it is, after all, job security
and as soon as the first game begins and our offense lines up and whatshisname we drafted on OLine isn’t starting, then whoziwhatshisname (Chiefsfan85? someone, I know!) will owe me a BOATLOAD of BBQ (and I doubled down on the bet, so thee should be enough for both of us)
as for the money … hoo boy, you go t THAT right: it ain’t yours, mine, none of us here … no way, no how
so, need a personal assistant? I can type AND make coffee …

Maybe an incentive loaded contract
with some tweaks built-in. Seems that contracts are not exactly what you and I have with our mortgage company, in the NFL. 30 million guaranteed would be a reasonable place to start and then make it more Cap friendly.
Trip MacCracken and Denny Thum are about the best, just like the rest of the Crack Chiefs Admin that Clark has assembled :)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Did anyone notice that the Football has a Star on it?
The other team has a Star on their helmut?
Berry Took their ball, and it looks slim to none they get it back :)

Great info Steve!
I too am having a difficult time finding football related material to hold my attention. This time of year tests a football fans composure. Hopefully we’ll have some nice reports of Chiefs fun in the sun before long. Hoooo Boy!
