Broncos Pick Up Former Chiefs RB Kolby Smith
So...
Broncos on Tuesday were assigned running back Kolby Smith off waivers from Kansas City.
Maybe the Broncos are curious what the Chiefs new zone blocking system is like. Maybe they feel Smith still has a future in the league.
Either way, it's very interesting that the Broncos put in a waiver claim on Smith.
Guys from the Belichick/Parcells tree usually don't look too fondly upon players with an extensive injury history, like Smith has so I'm going to guess that they're more interested in what he knows about the Chiefs than what he can offer the team's running backs.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

I was not surprised that some team...
in the AFC West signed Smith off our waivers..I kinda thought it would be Oakland though.
I thought it would be San Diego
Kolby has a few years in and could help Mathews adjust, and the Chargers could use some depth at RB besides a rookie and a gadget guy.

Maybe they did put claim on him.
Denver was just ahead them in line.
Word
I was fully expecting Oakland to pick him up and reunite him in the backfield with Bush

Good for Kolby. I hope they start him against us.
We know his moves.

lol Smith over Moreno?
Not a chance it’ll ever happen. I wanted Kolby to become a great RB with us, especially after that Oakland game a few years back. But realistically, he isn’t a starting RB in the NFL.

Moreno wasn't anything special last year
Maybe he’ll take the next step this season, but he sure didn’t look like a top draft pick. Buckhalter outperformed him by a landslide.

did you see the other part of that story?
they cut their punter, leaving Colquitt’s brother as the starter
this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most all major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6?

Not much help to the donkeys
Unless of course they’re wondering where the chiefs rehab center is. I guess they might also want Kolby to show the running backs how to run sideways without ever hitting a hole.

interesting
I bet Smith spills the beans, but it still isnt going to matter, we are going to whip them senseless. Just goes to show you how scared McD and Denver is if they have to pluck our scraps just to find a little information.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

But what could he really even know right now?
A brand new system that has yet to be put in place with pads and contact. So pretty much, he just knows that it’s supposed to be a zone blocking scheme. He knows nothing about any adjustments that will be made, what kind of 2nd tier blocking there will be, who can handle their blocks, really nothing important.

EXACTLY!
Thats my take on it. They already have quite a few backs on the roster, my guess he’s just therelong enough to be debriefed about whats going on here. I like Kolby, but he’s damaged goods. When D releases him before 1st preseason game it’ll be obvious that was what they were after…

I'm glad
Its a good sign that we can cut people with that can actually play somewhere because we have a surplus of talent at that particular position. Where as in the past it seemed like the majority of players we cut never played in the league again. I think that speaks to our progress. Having said that I really respect what Kolby did to make his way back so I’m hoping for the best for him in Denver….Just not against us…

“Guys from the Belichick/Parcells tree usually don’t look too fondly upon players with an extensive injury history, like Smith has.”
Yea but McDaniels is the Black sheep of that coaching tree.
H'ell be lucky to stay with the practice squad.
Daniels and crew want to see what the Chiefs let go, and maybe try to get some knowledge of the terminology for certain plays. We’ll see if he’s a Benedict Arnold. The offense shouldn’t be that predictable this year. So if certain plays are sniffed out when we play them, he “may have” told them something. Most importantly the shifts. But I dont know, how would you react if you were fired by your boss and hired by his competition? Would you tell your former boss’s tactics “secrets” to get back?
Really from the exercize bikes how much does Kolby know
My wish is the ones cut loose stay available to the Borg/Chiefs when we need them later in the season

I believe Josh worked under Charlie Weis at NE. I doubt there’s much he doesn’t know about the Offense Haley/Weis are running. And vice versa. I doubt Kolby has any state secrets to tell him.
He worked with Weis, not Haley.
There is a difference between Weis/Belichick, and Weis/Haley. The diferences are called philosophies. Haley has a different style than Belichicks. Remember the Cardinals of a couple year’s ago? Haley’s crew did a great job in turning that franchise around. He was the head man there. He got them into shape, and demanded better of them. I think he even had a hand in calling the plays. It’s goning to be Haley’s design and Weis is going to “fine” tune it.
How much of the playbook will he share with McDaniels?
The Chiefs will finish .500 or better in 2010.

He's a hard working player, who's pretty good all-around.
Might be a real steal for the Broncos. I wish him well (generally).
I wish him well...
except when he plays the Chiefs.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
There is little insight Kolby Smith can provide the Broncos
that they won’t have by the time these two teams play.

It will be interesting if he gives them information on you system and shifts. The bottomline to me is execution. Even if you know what the offense might do, if it is executed properly they can’t stop it. Go Chiefs!

it was dumb of us to let smith go
and the damn broncos snatched him up. this makes me hate the broncos even more
"WIth the 5th pick in the 2010 NFL draft the Kansas City Chiefs select... Eric Berry Safety Tennesee... "
why was it dumb?
Smith had potential but could not stay healthy to save his life. He wont be on the 53 with the season starts Id put money on it
Finally, the edge we need to win the division!
I joke, I joke… ; )
Just curious what you guys think of him coming of his injuries? What were the issues? Are we talkin’ MCL/ACL, foot, ribs, laryngitis, or what?
Also, what do you like about him? Seems like a good guy to me, but I don’t know much about him.
I like Josh. But I need Ws.
Hey montana
Smith just has bad luck with injuries in 2008 he was putting a up a pretty good game and then had a Buc land on his leg and tore up his knee and then last season he had an ankle inury both injuries put him out for the collective seasons.
I like that Kolby Smith is a hard worker he did enough to make Todd Haley think he should be the starter when then cut LJ but unfortunately for Kolby the injury bug hit him again…He works hard and is a very humble player. I wish him luck just not against the Chiefs!
same as what tomahawk said
hard worker. He actually got the nod first in front of Jamaal Charles last season because Haley liked his work ethic. If he can get in there and stay healthy then he will help your team unfortunately.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
thanks guys
Sounds like a quality guy. Here’s hoping for the best for him as a player, not just a Bronco.
I like Josh. But I need Ws.
