Chiefs May Have A Big Advantage Against The Chargers On Monday Night Football
The Chiefs will open the 2010 season against the Chargers on Monday Night Football. It's possible, according to recent reports, the Chargers will be missing arguably the second and third best players on the team.
LT Marcus McNeill and WR Vincent Jackson are reportedly willing to sit out the entire 2010 season because of a contract issue. Like Jarrad Page with the Chiefs, they're both restricted free agents. And, like Page, neither signed their tenders by Monday night meaning their salaries were cut.
This is only making them more and more upset.
GM A.J. Smith has a reputation around the league as a tough negotiator. He won't be bullied into signing long-term deals for McNeill and/or Jackson. And those two don't seem willing to sign absent a long-term deal.
Translation: The Chiefs may face the Chargers on the Monday night opener without both of these players.
That would be huge for the Chiefs.
So the Jarrad Page situation certainly isn't good but the Chargers are evidence things could be a whole heck-of-a-lot worse.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
Hey JBJ
I noticed those predictions in your sig. When did you make them?

Good stuff.
It had been prior to he 09 season, that would have been upgraded to great stuff. Any more predictions?

well, the Clancy thing...I wasn't the only one saying that when they hired him....
I just didn’t put any of these in my sig until later. No more predictions for now. Just keeping the same ones until they all three materialize. ;)

I still don't understand the Page not signing
Does anyone have any insight into why he hasn’t signed his offer and what he’s hoping form?
Following the Chiefs more than I should be between late nights at a social networking software start up.
The following is the response I got from Joel Thorman when I asked the same thing:
I hope you don’t mind Joel. I thought it was good insight, so I will share.
His response is as follows:
“Not quite sure why he’s not here. The Chiefs drafted two safeties so he knows he may not be in their future plans.
Look at it from his side: He’s close to being a free agent and wants to get a long-term deal to secure himself for the future. What if he signs his $1.7 million tender, then goes out there and tears his ACL and never plays again? That’s why players want long-term deals.
From his perspective, it’s hard to blame him."

Thanks
I appreciate it. I still can’t see how a guy expects an immediate long term deal after being out injured last season on top of the CBA uncertainties. It seems to me that he’s having difficulties seeing this from the other side.

I agree somewhat.
But you kind of answer your own question too. His injury last season is fresh in his mind and he is trying to safeguard against the same thing hurting his chances for a long term deal down the road. He wants the contract now.

Which is exactly my point
If he gets injured, what is his value to the team? It seems that he’s trying to insure against what he thinks is a probable event. If I were the team, I’d have a hard time “insuring” him with a long term deal right now. Especially without a recent proven season.

Personally...
I would let him sit and rot. We can sure use him, but this is going to be another learning and rebuilding year. It’s a year that we should see a lot of improvement. So, to me, I would tell him to sign or don’t sign. We’ll move on like your not here. And if you do come on board fine. Otherwise, sit out the year and see if that helps your value for the next season. Good luck. You aren’t exactly Ed Reed dude. You are just a guy. And “just a guy” is replaceable.

That's what happens when you hire your brother to be your agent
There’s a reason none of these family/friends as your agent work out. Have to keep business separate if you care about your own best interest. I’m sure that everyone who’s not close to Paige can see that he’s probably making a big mistake here…no matter what his motivation may be.
Predictions:
This year will be better
But if EVERY PLAYER...that had a tender to sign....
thought like Page…..the league would cease to exist as we know it.
Teams would be unable to hold any meaningful OTA’s, mini-camps, or training camps, because they would be in a perpetual and continuous state of contract negotions and re-negotiations. No one would ever be around to practice.
It’s a selfish act from a selfish person.

I think the two of them sticking together
will work to their advantage. They’ll both have a new deal by the end of training camp. SD has been too close to being a championship team for too long, without them they’re nothing, and smith knows that. Hopefully, they’re not up to speed by week 1, though.
maybe so
but SD already signed Tra Thomas and WR Reed from the Bills. At first I thought it was a bluff, but then seeing this they may be prepared to roll with them.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Smith is a crafty businessman...
who knows what he has up his sleeve. But I can’t possibly see it working to his advantage to be missing those two guys. I hope for our sake he’s just turning into Al Davis;
I gotta agree here
They would have to play at least 6 games this season to get paid, so hopefully they miss the games against us

We'd be trading away a big problem....
and solidifying a tough position to fill, and some big shoes to fill in Brian Waters…for the next 5 or 6 years, in one swift move.
This could be Waters last year. We don’t know. Plus, Brian Waters could be moved….or even traded to the Pats for Mankins. That would be ideal. I’m down for it.

I've seen this headline in the past...
That we have an advantage because X is out or Y is banged up.. people seem to forget we’re still void of talent. Unless Rivers, Sproles and half the defense are inactive, the Chiefs have no advantage even at this point in time.
Really? We're void of talent?

by Chief Arrowhead on Jun 15, 2010 1:18 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Yes...
he will be out for sure even if he decides to play. I think McNeil will be there. Although, if I were Smith I would want to compensate Jackson first.
by I_Bleed_Red. on Jun 15, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions
not being argumentative
why would you choose to compensate a WR rather than your franchise LT? i would pay the LT every single time instead of the DUI, about to be suspended, WR.
I think its...
easier to find another franchise LT over a game changing WR. Plus, McNeil is older and rookie offensive tackles can come in and play right away.
by I_Bleed_Red. on Jun 15, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions
see, i see it the exact opposite
for the success of that offense, they have to have that LT. Rivers needs it and so does this years first round draft pick. and you think McNeill is old??? he was drafted in 2006, he’s 26! you’re quick to put people out to pasture!
Ok...
you’re right. I take that back. I could have sworn he was 29. Anyway, they should pay McNeil and trade Jackson.

I'd say the Chargers are more at a disadvantage because:

LOL, If we are to make the playoffs this year (you heard it here first) we need a bit of luck. SD is the biggest problem standing in our way to make that happen. I will take a W even if it is a forfeit because the whole team comes down with the flu. We must at least split with SD in order to have a chance.
