Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Chiefs Waive Six Including RB Kolby Smith, QB Matt Gutierrez

The Chiefs on Monday waived six players: RB Kolby Smith, QB Matt Gutierrez, TE Leroy Banks, OL Jermail Porter, DB Andre Jones and OL Nick Landry.

Smith has been with the Chiefs since 2007 yet has ended the season on IR in each of the last two seasons so his release can't be considered a huge surprise. QB Matt Gutierrez was picked up as the emergency third quarterback last year and his release means QB Tyler Palko now holds that spot.

Banks, Jones and Landry were signed as undrafted free agents last month and realistically didn't have much of a chance to make the roster. Porter is a former wrestler that spent part of 2009 on the practice squad and was considered a developmental player.

This puts the Chiefs at 80 players (not counting Jarrad Page). They are allowed to have 80 players under contract right now. Remember, they haven't signed anyone from their draft class so this means that rookie signings are on their way.

Look for rookie signings to start filtering in shortly.

I think they let Kolby go so early to give him a chance at a job..

I dont see him making a team but I think the Chiefs where nice enough to let him go now instead of later so he can go get his chance to prove hes recovered and ready to go for another team…my guess Oakland..

Got to give Palko credit

I think most everyone believed he was a training camp arm. Now he has a real shot to make the team.

Good for him.

Depends on Croyle

I think Croyle is cut if he has to sit out any amount of training camp due to injury. I do remember Haley saying Croyle helped Cassel and the team a lot being on the sidelines (or something around those lines). If that is the case he might be 3rd even with an injury.

by groundedchevy on Jun 14, 2010 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Croyle is still probably the most tallented QB we have

when it comes to natural ball throwing skills, he just cannot stay healthy enough to commit all of the Training Camp first team work to…

By dropping Kolby are they making room for Williams on the active roster? Would give us a chance to move Tevaris Johnson to the practice squad.

Yea I’m wondering what they feel his future is. Seems to be getting a little more attention. Don’t know a whole lot about him but. As long as he follows around T.Jones and soaks everything up he could have something going.

yup Im excited about Williams

I hope he learns well from TJ and eventually helps JC as a 1-2 punch when Jones is gone. I know Joel said he is starting to really like him from what hes seen in his practice report the other day

From the posts

it sounds like Williams is staying and Moore might have a shot. But I haven’t heard anything about Johsnon. The guy sounds big for a running back and might make a better complement to JC than Williams in the future, but don’t know anything about the guy.

they may of and already cut him…Im really pulling for him to get a job somewhere though. Battle is still listed on the roster

but he’s going into his fourth season. RB is different from QB, OL and DL, you don’t get years to develop or get better with age. Williams spent time on the PS last year to get him more up to mental speed with the NFL while Battle hasn’t really made a name for himself. If I were the coach or GM, I’d take my chances with Williams over Battle on the active roster.

by Chiefs4Life on Jun 14, 2010 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

That spot depends a lot on special teams though

Battle is a big fast guy that can play on every ST unit and I think that’s why he’s still around.

Palko has been signed and waived by 4 different teams.

This was the first big mistake by the Chiefs management of the off-season.

Guiterrez was a great third string pocket QB. When he played last pre-season, he threw once completion after another and acted like a field general out there.

I havn’t seen Palko yet, but from the history he has within the NFL in 4 years, I can’t see why they would let Guiterrez go in favor of him.

Palko had more of a college career

He won the starting job at PITT over Joe Flacco…did you see the teams Palko was on? Saints, Cards , and Steelers…seems like all three were set at QB when Palko was on their teams. Did you ever watch Palko play for Pitt? or is your opinion based on never seeing him play?

my opinion is based solely on seeing Guiterrez play.

And of course in Palko’s inability to land a 3rd string QB job with how many? 3 or 4 different teams.

Hey Palko may be wonderful. I just liked the way Guiterrez handled himself out there. Great arm strengh. Great accuracy. Sure of himself. And he looked like a field general out there to me.

Not to be a cynic...

But who cares? Either one is the 3rd string emergency QB. If either one saw the field this year, the season would be over.

They’ll probably take a flyer on a QB next year in the draft to develop, who will take Palko’s place.

by JonasVenture on Jun 14, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

That's Baloney.

And I guess I’m the only one who cares.

And you’re wrong about the season being “over” if either one saw the field.

In fact, it’s exactly the opposite of what you said.

If Palko sees the field, it means that both Cassel and Croyle are both injured.

Scenario: Matt could go 6-2 and get injured, and then Brodie could come in and go 6-2 and get injured. Chiefs are then 12-4 and headed into the playoffs with nothing but the third string QB leading them into the playoffs, champ game, and the Super Bowl.

All QB’s are important. Why would Bill Bellichek say the 2nd most important position on the team is the back-up QB?

Think man think.

Backup QB aka Croyle

If you’re down to your 3rd QB, you’re most likely screwed. Not many, if any, teams have a 3rd string QB they’d be comfortable with leading their team into the playoffs.

Odds are if your scenario came to pass, even if Gutierrez was the guy, they’d be bringing in an experienced vet to run things.

You can be irritatied, but keep it in perspective

The guy is a 3rd string QB. Letting him go isn’t a mistake. If he is bound for greatness, well then nobody else has seen it (save you, I guess).

Using the argument of your first two QBs going down is weak; the event itself is unlikely, even good teams will have a (very) hard time adjusting, and you can’t definitively say Gutierrez is a better QB than Palko and expect many people not named Matt Gutierrez to believe you.

I think it will be between those two for the last roster spot. MoLegg seems to show up on special teams tho. I would say once Carr’s rookie contract is over he will no longer be a Chief unless he turns into a superstar. He will want more money than the Chiefs are willings to pay for his second contract.

by groundedchevy on Jun 14, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought the same about Carr...

I see a big extension for Flowers, and Arenas to take Carr’s job when he’s ready to go. But the team that does sign Carr will be quite happy with him…just like the Texans with Pollard

by Randy5225 on Jun 14, 2010 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I couldnt disagree more....

Arenas is a great 3 corner…and I think the chiefs love Brandon Carr….I sure do…he gives KC a Big Corner…flowers/arenas is two small corners, nothing against that but for matchup reasons, carr is an excellent corner to have…good speed for his size.

I think Colin Brown is the 53rd man.

I really, really, really get tired of posting the stats ...

… but, statistically, Carr was better than Flowers last year. It’s a fact. I’m not sure how much more we can ask of him before we start considering him a ‘superstar’ when we all already consider (prematurely) Flowers to be our shutdown corner.

by JacinB on Jun 14, 2010 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Cares stats were better cuz they threw his

way all day. Carr even admits he had a bad year, so please slow down on the Carr is better than Flowers chatter.

The Chiefs will finish .500 or better in 2010.

by Tony Perkins on Jun 14, 2010 5:28 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Uh huh.

Go check it.

He was thrown at less than Flowers (84 vs. 93) while playing more snaps (1088 vs. 1016).

And in his supposedly self-proclaimed bad year (you have a source for that quote?), he was still in the top 24 corners in the league (of 64 starters at that spot, and 107 ranked) as ranked by ProFootballFocus.com …

Yeah, they guy sucks. Let's cut him.

by JacinB on Jun 14, 2010 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

He also allowed ...

… less yards after the catch (219 vs. 224) and had more passes defensed (13 vs. 12).

by JacinB on Jun 14, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The numbers look very similar.

Now, cross-reference that with the numbers of the WRs they were facing.

I’m not really interested in getting too into this dispute, but I think Flowers currently has the clear edge.

That being said, I think surviving a year of Cunningham, a year of transition, and entering his 3rd year with great coaches, he could be a world-beater before the book closes on his career.

by hmills110 on Jun 14, 2010 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Carr is a pretty good CB, but he’s not in the same league with Flowers. I don’t care what the numbers say (stats are WAY overrated in football), you can see it on the field.

by chicks_love_chiefs on Jun 14, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Right.

Which is why the NFL has a long tradition of holding onto kickers who are automatic inside the 30 but get shaky from 40 yards and out, right?

Stat’s are why everyone was in an uproar when Woodson won that award over Revis, weren’t they? Because Revis played more snaps and allowed a significantly lower completion percentage and less TDs while being thrown at more often and racking up almost three times as many passes defensed?

Yeah, nobody cares about stats and they don’t accurately reflect how well someone’s doing on the field. No one really cares how many sacks someone gets because, hey, that doesn’t matter. No one cares about how many INTs someone gets because that doesn’t mean anything. No one cares about completion percentages from your QBs (just ask JaMarcus) or how many passes WRs drop (just ask … well, anyone here). Stats don’t mean jack.

If Cottam Gets Cut...

it will be stupid move. He can block and catch. He’s a big target for Cassel and drag players for a few extra yards. Besides, he learned from the best and I think the combo of Haley / Weis will bring out his best. I’m a fan of Cottam, so I choose to disagree with your “prediction.”

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

I thought it suprising that both

Gutierrez and Kolby were cut. Palko was with the Cards while Haley was there so he should have a very good idea of what he has in him. If Palko can develop, he could easily supplant Broken Brodie. Hell, if he can just say healthy he would be an improvement. Kolby needed to be gone a long time ago but until Thomas Jones came in the house, we didn’t have much to replace him with. Now with a strong 1 and 2 we can keep some of the younger, healthier guys around to give them a chance. Kolby had nowhere to go on our offense unless someone was to get hurt. Even then, I am not sure that given his injury history, I would prefer a youngster.

But at the same time…hes only been around two years…was IR’er one year and didn’t play a full season the other…so saying he’s “not had the injury bug” isn’t really accurate either.

Yawn...

Yet in college and high school he hasn’t had injuries… So let’s get real…

You obviously want to argue for the sake of arguing, but have no argument to bring to the table. Or how about you go cheer on a team that you want to get better instead of being so miserable.

If you don’t want to see players on the Chiefs improve, that’s fine and great… go join the Broncos! Their fans they will embrace your negativity.

Go Chiefs!!!!

roger that…my only point was that….well you don’t know what your talking about.

he has been in the right place at the right time

...and you have proven over and over that you don't know what you are talking about.

How about the full quote… or are you to lazy?

he has been in the right place at the right time to make plays

and whom came up with a Touchdown on this play???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hckDvqN9jHM

or wait…. here’s another one for a touchdown

http://www.nfl.com/videos/denver-broncos/09000d5d80d1a4f7

10 seconds of research… yes he has been in the right place at the right time to make plays.

Go Chiefs!!!!

nice "research"

I stand corrected, MoLegg has proven he can stay healthy...and he's a good CB

This is where you are wrong again...

I never said he was a good CB.

Yet his time is probably going to come soon…

but he needs to be a consistant play maker on this team if he is going to stay.

Right in the very first post that you decided to quote from earlier… Reading is obviously hard for you.

Go Chiefs!!!!

After Shane became a big star

and learned of importing women, he threw her to the curb and she was never able to recover.

She changed her look a bit and played some smaller roles in movies, but never did anything great.

It's Shane Falco.... Not Tyler Falco...

And Thigpen is gone… he’s not coming back… it’s time to let go…

It's time to let go---

is a really great put down. Why not let go of 2009, 2008, 1969. Should people not be allowed to comment on the past?

its's a form of homerism

any past reflection or doubt of recent moves comes under fire b/c it calls into question the validity of their delusion homerness

two thoughts

First, I really liked what I saw from tyler palko in the preseason with the saints in limited time.

second, Shane Falco/thigpen, nice combo, we need to call Will to play clifford franklin.

oh, final thought…I was pulling for kolby….but its just tough when you werent that quick to begin with…then 2 surgeries…oh well

I know Andre Jones is a "do it all" guy & I was curious to see him in camp.

They also said Leroy Banks was doin really well so y not cut him? Cut O’Connell if he’s struggling. He was just a 7th rounder last year

by HIT34MAN on Jun 14, 2010 6:00 PM CDT reply actions

I think it's the versatility factor.

O’Connell still might develop as a receiver. Plus he’s a ‘tweener who can play ST, AND I think maybe there’s some (blocking) H-Back in his future.

Kolby and Guit Cheese...

Now they can start that cheese factory they’ve been scheming up on the sidelines over the course of the last year…

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass
