Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles A Popular "Breakout Season" Candidate

It seems that anytime you read about the Chiefs anymore, there's one common prediction: Jamaal Charles is headed for a breakout season.

Everywhere you read someone is mentioning a breakout year for Charles. That now includes NFL.com analyst Pat Kirwan, who ranks Charles third in a list of the top 20 players primed for a breakout season.

Star-divide

Is he the next Chris Johnson? He went from 629 total yards rushing and receiving to 1,417 from his first to second season. As the offense matures, he could hit 2,000 yards from scrimmage.

This isn't the first time Charles has been compared to Chris Johnson. Only Johnson had more yards than Charles in the second half of the 2009 season.

In fact, after the Bills game last December, Charles made the CJ comparison unprompted from reporters. "I'm a physical player and I can run the ball just like Chris Johnson does," he told us at the time.

This will be an interesting year for Charles. He and the rest of the team are expecting big things. The addition of Thomas Jones may be the spoke in the 2,000 tires but expect Charles to be a major part of the Chiefs in 2010.

I think realistically..

He’ll get somewhere between 1200-1300 yards from scrimmage this year with Thomas Jones around.

I agree

I loved him last year for my fantasy team, he did bring me back from down 50 points to beat someone I just seem to never beat…I thank jamaal for that….however with TJ and Mccluster, I just don’t see charles getting the touches he had last year…we had so many injuries that he didnt really have a good backup during his big run.

I do find it silly to say he will breakout this year, when he pretty much already broke out like LJ did that half season…he got credit for breaking out

Team Pioli/Haley

by SDChief on Jun 1, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

he won't get the yards on the ground

but i have a feeling charles’ receptions will pick up this year. he showed us he could line up wide last year and even haley has made some comments about how he has receiving skills. i’m intrigued by the YAC potential of this team. Dex and JC are the standouts, but even bowe could get mentioned here if he got his act together… that’s one thing he excelled at in college

if rhymes were valiums, i'd be comfortably numb

TJ will help

I think that TJ will actually help Jamaal get more yards. Obviously he will take away some touches but he will also get key yards to keep the drives going. No more 3 and outs. Also, if TJ gets is able to get positive yardage it will keep them out of 3rd and long and maybe have 3rd and 2 or 3. great opportunity for pass or rush, not guaranteed passing down.

So, they don't think he broke out last year?

Agree

I would say he had a “breakout” year last year because that’s when everyone else noticed him in the league.

I don't believe in sig lines.

Reading the article...

I believe they were refering to players that will break out and get invited to the Pro Bowl.

Go Chiefs!!!!

It's a "breakout"

because no one outside of KC paid attention to him until they noticed his stats at year’s end.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Jun 1, 2010 9:30 AM CDT reply actions

I think Haley wants Jones to start

and Charles to be the change-up back

it’s going to make it harder to breakout if he doesn’t start

by Home skillet on Jun 1, 2010 9:56 AM CDT reply actions

Haley called Jones the Alpha dog

and while he may start, JC is very much in the plans. Last season when 2.7 had his stuff going on JC was still the third back behind Kolby Smith. He didnt even get looked at until Smith got hurt. JC will see lots of reps starting with the first game not the tenth so he still has every opportunity to break out even while splitting the reps with Jones.

Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

I look at Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones almost like MJD and Fred Taylor in 2007.

Taylor was the go-to guy, but MJD was one heck of a knockout punch. See Shawne Merriman for details…

god i love that play

thats is one of the best hits iv’e ever seen.

We need to draft Eric Berry, no if's / and's or buts about it!!!!

Jones is the “alpha dog” in the weight room. Charles is the unquetioned #1 RB on this team, and only injury or poor performance will change that.

by dablueguy on Jun 1, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

No way

unless Charles has a fumbling problem again, there is no way he’s not the starter and primary RB this year. I expect Charles to get about 18-20 carries per game and Jones to get whatever is left. McCluster will probably get a couple carries per game as well, but will mostly work as a slot receiver.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Jun 1, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

This O-line’s strength isn’t blocking for a “power back” as we saw with LJ. TJ is the same “type” of runner as LJ and I think Jones will be the “change of pace” back as strange as that sounds. I’m also looking forward to packages with 3 WR sets, and JC and McCluster all on the field at the same time. The linebackers will have no idea where to line up.

I realize I'm late to the party but...I'm on Twitter.

maybe you should watch some tape on Jones

he isn’t like LJ at all … in fact he’s not really a power back at all.

when he came out of college he was pass catching, almost 3rd down type back. Over his career he has just gotten tougher and more physical but he’s not a power back. More LT than LJ.

by Home skillet on Jun 1, 2010 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe you should. He was the beween tackle guy on the Jets for the last few years, while Leon Washington was the change of pace, out of the backfield guy.
Even when Leon got hurt last year, Jones was still not used in the passing agme, only catching 10 passes. He’s not as good a receiver as either LT or LJ was.
In the comparison of running styles he’s far more LJ than LT.

by dablueguy on Jun 1, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that jones was brought in more as a insurance

I know that he had a 1400 yard season last season, but he is getting older and this is JC’s job to lose. If you looked last year you saw Tim Castille playing and doing a horrific job. TJ is there to make sure that when JC needs a break we don’t miss a step. That and to be the goal line bruiser back.

Smile, its the second best things you can do with your lips!

by fleetmarine on Jun 1, 2010 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

I think last year would be considered "breakout" for JC. Now he has "expectations".

I also really don’t care who starts because both JC and TJ are gonna get the rock early and often. This will be the defining season for Cassel because he now has weapons and a stout running game. I think if he ddoesn’t show significant improvement then this coaching staff is going to start looking elsewhere… and not toward Croyle either.

Charles will be the premier back between the 20s.

Jones will have a role to play but Charles will be the homerun hitter. Look for more screens with Charles and McCluster. More power running between the tackles with Jones. I am hoping they have at least a few plays where they are both on the field at the same time.

an editorial note: Charles WASN'T RANKED #3, the list was done alphabetically.
The 20 players in position to make a jump are listed in alphabetical order:

Hopefully

Our team as a whole will get to see more than 3 offensive plays per possession.

We win either way

We have TWO very good RB’s with TWO different running styles. I wouldn’t want to be a defensive coordinator going up against us.

Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
