Chiefs Offence ready for Explosion

A lot has been said about the Chiefs defence this offseason and how it will improve a lot. I, however, believe it will be our offence that explodes this coming season. I’ll use the model plane analogy. We’ve got all the pieces (Players). Last season, the glue was just a little wet and we didn’t have the hands (Coaches) to hold it in place while the glue dried. This coming season, everything will be in place, and will stick together. Last season, only two things held our offence back from being great; The WR position and the offensive line.

Many people believed Dwayne Bowe regressed last year in his development. I’m not going to make excuses. He had a bad season. While I won’t excuse him I will, and so should everyone, consider that he did miss five games this season. He has only himself to blame for this. If he did play though and his stats increased they still would be very poor. Another consideration was that he never had a true offensive coordinator. The Chan Gailey firing made Todd Haley the QBs coach, the offensive coordinator and the head coach. That’s a lot to handle. Now that Charlie Weis has been hired and Todd Haley has one less job, He can do what he does best; work with WRs. Look at everywhere Haley has been as a WR coach/OC. He had Keyshawn Johnson in Ney York; Marty Booker in Chicago; Terrell Owens in Dallas; and in Arizona he had Larry Fitzgerald. All Pro Bowl WRs. Haley will continue this trend with Bowe. With Chambers a proven WR and an exciting talent in Dexter McCluster in the slot, there aren’t any issues at WR.

The Chiefs offensive line last season was bad, to say the least. Now I hate to beat a dead horse here, but the stats last year are just too misleading. If you go over to Profootballfocus.com and look at Branden Alberts stats last year, you will find that 5 of his 7 sacks allowed came before week 10. The other two came in week 11 against Pittsburgh. In fact, 27 of the 44 sacks on our QBs came before week 10. So 61% of the sacks came in the first half of the season. Improvement? Clearly. Add in the fact we ridded ourselves of the useless Mike Goff/Wade Smith/Andy Alleman combination at RG, replacing them  with Ryan Lilja, who only allowed one whole sack last season. This is how I envision our offensive line this season

LT: Branden Albert (Barry Richardson)
LG: Ryan Lilja (Rudy Niswanger)
C: Brian Waters (Casey Wiegmann)
RG: Jon Asamoah (Colin Brown)
RT: Ryan O’Callaghan(Ike Ndukwe)

TE isn’t an issue. Tony Moeaki, Brad Cottom and Leonard Pope will all pressure each other for the starting TE spot. Whoever wins out will be good due to the competition. Our RB’s are deadly right now. Matt Cassel, with all these tools and weapons around him, will lead the offence to the top 15.

Be sure to check out Todd Haley’s Wikipedia page. You will find he had a great WR when he was in Dallas ;)
