Chiefs Could Sign Two To Three Tryout Players

During Todd Haley's press conference on Sunday he said he was generally pleased with the undrafted free agents and tryout players that participated in the rookie minicamp. The undrafted free agents are under contract and part of the club. The Chiefs released the names of those players.

We've been tracking the Chiefs tryout players with the various reports out there. I was able to confirm only a couple of the players at minicamp this weekend but Bob Gretz has seven of the eight tryout guys:

Kansas State DE Jeffrey Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh QB Bill Stull, Notre Dame WR David Grimes, Troy ILB Boris Lee, Vanderbilt DE Steven Stone, Virgina Tech LS Matt Tuttle and Eastern Michigan P Zach Johnson.

So are the Chiefs going to sign any of these guys?

"I would say there is a chance," Haley said yesterday. "Maybe a couple, three maybe?"

So who has a shot? This is my guess:

  • David Grimes: Plays a position of need and is familiar with Charlie Weis' offense, which means the learning curve in camp would be minimal.
  • Boris Lee: He plays at a position of need and had a solid camp.

I could see Fitzgerald as well.

Here's a pretty sweet catch made by Grimes

Though I can’t understand why it was ruled incomplete

Amazing catch

I will never understand how they called that incomplete. They even reviewed the play and still called it incomplete when his hand was clearly under the ball.

Wow

I looked at that several times. Even looked at it frame by frame. That ball NEVER touched the grass. That boy was robbed of a TD

I was just reading a transcript from an interview with Lee.

He sounds like the right 53. If nothing else I think he would be a special teams stud.

by Helmets on May 3, 2010 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

I'm with you

1. Boris Lee – ILB – Troy
- Solid player at a position that needs upgraded; probably should have been drafted

2. David Grimes – WR/KR – Notre Dame
- Special teamer that could also play slot WR; captain at Notre Dame

3. Jeffrey Fitzgerald – DE – K-State
- Transfer from Virginia, where he had experience in the 34 defense; solid production at K-State and probably should have been drafted
-

Add those guys to the class and our Draft looks even better.

by Nick Britt on May 3, 2010 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

He had good production at Virgnia, but transferred because of academic concerns

At least that is the story I heard. I am guessing that is why he fell on Draft Day. NFL Draft Scout had him as a 6-7 round guy.

I was surprised that all three of these guys weren’t drafted. I think they all have the talent.

We could definitely use the competition.

by Nick Britt on May 3, 2010 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

Although I could only potentially see Boris Lee making the final cut.

Grimes is not an upgrade at WR.

Fitzgerald is essentially another Andy Studebaker, not bad but we already got one. Plus with the addition of Sheffield…

I could actually see Lee doing pretty well for us. He was very productive at Troy.

I think...

Fitzgerald would be more of a hand in the dirt kind of guy.

Call me Red or IBR for short

by I_Bleed_Red. on May 3, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I see Fitzgerald as a RDE

That is where he played in Virgina’s 34 defense.

It will tough for him to make the team, but I think he could at least be a practice squad guy for us.

Another guy I want to see at DE is Bobby Greenwood, a guy we picked up last year from Alabama.

by Nick Britt on May 3, 2010 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I wanna see

More of Dion Gales…He is a big body with a lot of passion and will power. Would love to see him in more of a rotation…..Dorsey/Magee and TJ/Gales with Greenwood as a specialist.

Greenwood is a great pash rush DE that is good at getting at the QB.

What about Gilberry?

If we have Dorsey, Jackson, Magee, Gales and Greenwood, where does Gilberry fit?

linebacker

Gotta disagree again

The Chiefs will finish .500 or better in 2010.

I like Gales

He is a great pass rusher, but yes…undersized

by Nick Britt on May 3, 2010 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Well he is listed at 6'5 260

But I will bet he is more like 280…he is very similar in size to Tyson Jackson

Gilberry is who I meant....not Greenwood

Got them mixed up

Wasn't Gilberry the one

who sacked Big Ben and helped us win that game?

Bobby Greenwood

When I met him he was no taller than 6"2’ Looked more like OLB

by KC CZAR on May 3, 2010 5:21 PM CDT reply actions

Weird

Since he measured at something over 6’5" at his Pro Day last year. Now, Wallace Gilberry is a shade over 6’2", is that who you’re thinking of?

Check this out

I found a youtube video of Joe Casey. He went to my High School, Paducah Tilghman. This guy was recieving all the same accolades as Adrian Peterson in High School. He was an absolute beast!!

Sad thing is….he couldnt keep up with acedemics….so he dropped out his senior year and enrolled in a junior college…..needless to say he didnt finish. This guy could have been a great RB in the NFL.

The blue track and everything blue is my HS football field.

what's the big deal?

its been almost 2 years since david grimes has even played a snap, and he wasn’t even good at notre dame. don’t get too excited about that catch, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. no, he’s not the next miles austin.

i DO, however, like bringing in jeffrey fitzgerald. he fits our 3-4 defense perfectly. (no, i’m not a KSU fan, so there is no bias here)

lastly, as soon as danario alexander can pass a physical, we need to sign him asap.

How did he do during the weekend?

by ChiefsFan90s on May 3, 2010 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

It’s very doubtful that QB Bill Stull will be one of the tryout guys signed, but I’ll be he gets a look from another team. Despite the fact he was the only passer in camp, he seemed to throw the ball well; there were not a lot of foul balls in the passing drills that we saw. Stull was a late bloomer at Pitt and he may be one of those college QBs who is trending upward.

Wouldn’t be surprised if this was the guy Haley was talking about trying to get a spot on another team, since we have no room at QB.

Garrett Brown?

Didnt the Chiefs come to terms with DT/NT Garrett Brown from Minn. He’s a rookie I didnt see anything on him from the rookie camp? Anybody know anything?

Chiefs are going to surprise alot of people in 2010 !!!!

Greenwood

Greenwood is a great kid def the “Right 53” mold, he was a starter 3-4 DE at Alabama and team captain, the fact they kept him on the practice squad all year last year leads me to believe they like him and are trying to develope him( add a little more weight) My girlfriend went to Alabama and is close friends with him she saw him at the BCS championship game this year and said he looks like he has put on quite a bit more muscle since his college days… Heres a note for those excited about Areanas getting a shot at Tebow- Greenwood terrorized Tebow during his days at Bama and Im sure Tebow would not want any part of him anytime soon!
