Grading The Draft:  2006

Nfl_draft_065121_medium

via blogs.desmoinesregister.com

I honestly think that it takes a while before you can truly grade a draft.  Here I took the draft of 2006 to grade.  While you'll find some names you know you'll also find names you don't know.  Below you will find my thoughts, some stats, and the final grade of our 2006 draft.  This might have done before but just another fan's perspective.

Tamba Hali (1st round, 20th overall)

78648521

via cdn.bleacherreport.net

Probably the best pick in the Herm-era.  In four years he's played 3 positions (LDE, RDE, OLB) and put up 27 sacks and 14 forced fumbles.  He is always putting pressure on the QB and is often held especially by Ryan Clady.  He put up his best season (new position) last year and is only getting better.  He doesn't put up a lot of tackles or isn't that great in coverage but he does his job and that is killing the QB.

Bernard Pollard (2nd round, 54th overall)

Bernardpollardbrady_medium

via www.kcchiefsblog.com

It is sad that the only real thing a player gave to your team was your new "franchise" QB in a weird way of fate.  He was let go before last season and went on with the Texans.  He had his best year yet for another team.  If he would have stayed we probably wouldn't have got Berry.  So let us thank Pollard for being crappy for us.

Brodie Croyle (3rd round, 85th overall)

Brodie_croyle_medium

via www.d1sportstraining.com

For a player that has only 300 career throws you really can't say much.  He has had problems with injury and that has affected him.  He has a big arm and seems now to be a really good backup.  Every year there seems to be a "Start Croyle cause he is the best football player that ever lived" thread.  If he becomes more vocal and can take care of himself then I trust him to come in as a backup.  After, the Ravens game last year he gave me more confidence but still needs more work.

Marcus Maxey (5th round, 154th overall)

Max115822_medium

via static.nfl.com

I appoligize for the small picture but it turns out that not many pictures are available for a guy who has no NFL stats.  He was waived by the Chiefs twice and the Bears once.  He was a failure on all levels.  I could have put up more stats in the NFL.  I mean come on it's not like he was undrafted or even a 7th rounder.  5TH ROUND!

Tre' Stallings (6th round, 186th overall)

Stallings-tre-1-kcc_medium

via www.ballen-photos.com

It seems like the 5th round and 6th round this year just sucked for us.  Tre' is another example of a "horrible" player.  He was just recently on the Balitmore Ravens practice squad and I'm not sure if that still stands.  He also has no stats in an NFL game.

Jeff Webb (6th round, 190th overall)

Tennessee_titans_v_kansas_city_chiefs_ilr-vdwebbel_medium

via www1.pictures.gi.zimbio.com

Jeff Webb probably had "some" potential but with only 36 career catches and 1 touchdown it was never held true.  He was probably drafted to be a return man but he didn't fair out so well in that area either.  I'm not sure if he is a free agent or not since he didn't play last year for anyone.

Jarrad Page (7th round, 228th overall)

Page_medium

via www.mkrob.com

If he signs his tender then he will start this year and florish beside Berry.  It seems like he wins us a lot of games against the Raiders.  We shouldn't have expected much for a 7th rounder but he has been pretty solid for us.  More consistant than Pollard ever was.  He has 10 career interceptions, 29 passes defended,  and 4 forced fumbles in 4 years.  I hope he signs and plays this year because we need him.

Overall Grade: B -

I give this draft a B- for a couple of reasons.  We still have Hali and he is only getting better.  He is about the only real pass rusher we have on our team.  Croyle is a solid backup and will be for years to come.  Pollard did help a little bit when he was with us.  Page is consistant and will get better with more talent around him.  He has also played well in the clutch against division rivals.  The other three didn't pan out so well but Webb did have a few catches in there unlike statless Maxey and Stallings.  What would you give our 2006 draft?

I gave it a "C"

C represents “Average” on a real grading scale and these results are certainly no better than average. Given the limited on-field results from the 2nd – 6th rounders, I would lean more towards a solid C- bordering on a D.

I would have given it an A ...

If it hadn’t been for the whole Jeff Webb extravaganza. Man, he used to piss me off.

Well first round..

I wouldn’t give up Hali. Second round we should have grabbed Scheffler although at the time we didn’t need a TE.

the only guys i can see...

nick mangold in the first… and MJD in the second…

7-9 this year... 9-7 if we get lucky!! GO CHIEFS!!

by Abyssmal on May 30, 2010 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

looking back i would go with Jonathan Joseph and Eric Winston.

Winston was selected with the 3rd pick in the 3rd round and he is as solid of a RT as you can have. Jonathan Joseph is a shutdown quality corner and at pick 20 that is a solid pickup. Sad that we passed on him due to having Ty Law and Patrick Surtain both aging players.

1st – Jonathan Joseph CB
2nd- Eric Winston RT
3rd- Owen Daniels TE
4th- (No Herm Edwards) Elvis Dumervil DE / LB
5h- Omar Gaither LB
6th- Antoine Bethea S
6th- Cortland Finnegan CB
7th- Jarrad Page S

Wow what a great draft that fell into place there of course hindsight is perfect but Dumervil opposite Allen with Finnegan and Joseph learning beside Law and Surtain. Bethea and Page both capable safeties and Gaither a solid 4-3 LB’er not to mention an offense with Priest / LJ, TG, and Owen Daniels.

You can draft defensive line to stop a player at the line.
You can draft linebackers to stop a player 3-4 yards down the field.
Or you can draft a safety to tackle him 15 yards down the field.
I'll take the first two any day.

by ChiefsfanJon on May 30, 2010 12:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Without using hindsight...

…I’d go with Hali again in the first round. I thought he was a solid, albeit unsexy, pick there, and even using hindsight, he was still a darn good pick. I thought Pollard was a pretty lame pick at the time, and I still believe that now. I think at the time I was pulling for a few guys who did pan out (Chris Chester, Charles Spencer, Max Jean-Gilles, etc.) and a few that didn’t (Eric Winston, Derek Hagan, Ashton Youboty, Daryl Tapp, etc.). Of course, some of those who did pan out with other teams probably wouldn’t have with KC, and some who didn’t pan out with other teams might have with KC. Coaching makes a big difference.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

my answers!

1- nick mangold, no question
2&3- whoever between maurice jones drew, brandon marshall, elvis dumervil, jahri evans

Would give a C grade.

50% being the lowest.

1. Tamba Hali: 85%
2. Bernard Pollard: 75%
3. Brodie Croyle: 70%
5. Marcus Maxey: 50%
6. Tre Stallings: 60%
6. Jeff Webb: 70%
7. Jarrad Page: 95%

85+75+70+50+60+70+95=505/7=72.1%=C

Page over Hali?

Please explain.

Jamaal Charles...Enough said.

by Chiefsfan85 on May 29, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it makes a lot of sense

Jarrad Page has performed far, far better relative to his draft position than Tamba Hali has. Hali has performed about on par with expectations of the #20-overall pick. He has neither exceeded nor failed to meet expectations, although he was pretty disappointing in 2008 and pretty good in 2009. But Page was one of the last few picks in the draft, and has been a pretty good player. That’s pretty clearly exceeding expectations of his draft position.

Maybe...

I guess it just depends on how you look at it. Either way, I’m happy that we have both.

How does Croyle get 70%?

We gave up a 3rd round pick for a back-up QB, and waisted 3 years trying to make him a starter.

by bringbacktheglory on May 30, 2010 8:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Brodie Croyle is one of the better back-up QBs, has a lot of talent when he can stay on the field, and that would have been an A in the 5th-7th rounds, a B in the 4th round, a C in the 3rd round, D in the 2nd round, and F in the 1st round. Croyle is a good player, we just have a problem with him staying healthy.
