Demorrio Williams: Our Average Linebacker
via www4.pictures.gi.zimbio.com
One thing that we were missing last year from our LB Core was big plays. Tamba Hali can't do it all and without consistant plays from the other LB's we are going to be in trouble. A story that was just made today is that Demorrio Williams wasn't over a knee injury and that is why the lack of plays were made. Seriously? After the jump I will explain why that might not be the case.
I think that to be a linebacker in this league you have to have decent speed especially sideline to sideline. I think that Williams has shown that speed. I also think you need to be a sure tackler in this league and with Williams we all know can tackle. I also think you have to be decent in coverage which Williams needs help in. He also needs to step up and make the big play in tough game situtations. I just don't see how having Williams in over Johnson makes any difference. DJ will let tackles go but make big plays. Williams will tackle but won't force any turnovers. Ladies and Gentleman, pick your inside linebacker poison. Since, I'm a stats guy I will give you a good table over Demorrio's career.

He only started all 16 games in 2005 and 2007. Last year, he started 13 games for us and what do you see? His second best tackle amount and best passes defended amount. You also see no sacks, interceptions, or forced fumbles/fumble recoveries. What made his second year in Atlanta so good? Was it because he was young and didn't have knee problems? Well every year after that it seems he went on a decline although he dramatically came up in tackles from 2008 to last year.
I think we have to face the facts kids. We have an "average" starting inside linebacker at best. He will tackle well and help with run game but sadly he never was a big playmaker on defense even in his younger years. I'll be amazed if he improves on last years stats. Go Chiefs!

Average?
I think he’s terrible. He can’t cover. He’s meh against the run. He can’t shed blockers, he can’t pass rush and he’s just too tiny. He size would be acceptable if he was rangy and could cover, but now that
I bring that up, who has those attributes? That would be DJ. DJ gables and over commits at times so he’ll wind out of place. when he’s right though, he makes big playes. I’ll take one INT over 20 textbook tackles any day. Williams is one of the few players i’m actively hoping won’t make the team. Belcher played like a guy with something to prove. let him prove it
I said in my actually body average at best...
He did tackle well and I agree coverage as poor and no big plays. I wonder if we put him next to DJ if that would help him instead of Mays?

i agree with the belcher comment....but
I can’t completely agree with your assessment of Demorrio. I think he is an “average” starting inside linebacker but the chiefs are not in a position to be cutting linebackers. Demorrio deserves to be on the team as a linebacker, starting or not. We need quality players that can tackle and give 100% every play.
Belcher impressed me in several games. He is a work in progress but all of the stories about him this off season have me excited for his development.

I agree with you on DJ and Belcher.
If you take DJ and his plays out of the last Denver game, that game doesn’t look near as good. And it is not out of the question to say that Dj’s plays took the heart out of the Denver players and made our guys play better.

I second the vote for 'average'
The only reason Demorrio made so many tackles last season is that everyone around him played the game like little girls. But that’s also a good reason to keep him around. I’m sure Crennel will have a use for him.
So how do we get big plays AND solid tackling out of our ILBs?
The key is DJ. He has to show something this year. Of course it’s not easy for a 4-3 OLB to make the move to ILB in the 3-4. It could be that he simply can’t be effective in our defensive scheme. This is the year to find out though. He’s in a contract year which means it has to be a big one for him if he wants to further his career. So I, for one, am excited to see what he has to offer this year. He does tend to get out of position and miss tackles though. Demorrio on the other hand is a sure tackler and plays with discipline. But you could argue he plays with too much discipline and no instinct. This is why he doesn’t make plays. It’s hard for me to fathom that in 117 tackles the ball couldn’t be forced out even once.
A lot has been made of DJ and Williams competing with each other this year. But I wonder if they couldn’t both be on the field. I would like to see a combination of the two on the field. Maximize DJ’s instinct and playmaking ability with Williams’ discipline and sure tackling.
Of course, we should all probably realize that Romeo Crennel is light years ahead of us when it comes to running the 3-4. I believe that DJ still being in a Chiefs uniform is a vote of confidence from the DC and the rest of the KC brass. If they didn’t have faith in him to some degree, Johnson would already be gone. They can’t get near as much for him after next year as they could have now.

That's what I was trying to say in comments above...
Maybe DJ and DW can counterbalance eachother. Maybe, play off eachother and do better.

I've been saying this all along...
I think we’re trying to make a backup LB seem like a starting LB (Square Peg vs Round Hole). He was not much which is why he came to KC in the 1st place (no thanks to Herm) and he’s been on the team since trying to leave an impression. Well, if you ask me, that impression is that he’s exactly what this post title states… Average.
I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.
Yep...
Don’t get me wrong I think that if he steps up he can have a few years left in him but he has to make plays. I wouldn’t mind his tackle total with a couple sacks and interceptions to add. I’m just tired of seeing our LB’s (excluding Hali) to be pushed around. We are running a 3-4 for god’s sake. We need our LB’s to step the hell up!
Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
Here's a stat.
39 players in the NFL had 100 or more tackles last season. Of that number, only 9 failed to force a fumble. Less than 25%. Of those 9, Williams is the only one that doesn’t have an INT or sack to his credit either.

Okay but of the billion other players in the NFL Demorrio was one of only 39 to record 100 or more tackles last season.

If he was hurt last year like he says
Then I think he will be better this year. I don’t hate DJ but would’ve rather had “average” out there last year than Dow Jones out there! Maybe this is the offseason it clicks for DJ and god I hope so, but I think DJ is just average as well(as of late)
Who said we knew?
It’s all opinions. Like the one you just posted thinking you know that everyone thinks they know everything, ya know?
As of this moment in time we have 6 ILB prospects
Johnson 6’3 242 27 years old – obviously the most talented of this bunch
Williams 6’1 232 29 years old – The surest on being in the right position (scheme)
Belcher 6’2 228 22 years old – The most upside on the Chiefs ILB roster
Mays 6’1 245 26 years old – run stuffer with size, only run-stuffer with size on the roster
Greenwood 6’2 235 23 years old – Solid prospect, supposed good cover and run-stuffer
Herron 6’1 239 – Bouncing around on the Chiefs roster
I can see the meat-puzzle that Pendergast saw last year. Maybe the players in Rush/Pass platooning was the best we could do last year. Unless Williams or Johnson ever start taking on blockers for the benefit of their teammates I don’t see both on the field in any obvious run situations. Say 1st down :(
