Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 5/21
Good morning AP. Here's today's Kansas City Chiefs news. You are probably not surprised to hear there's a lot about life on the road. We've also got the line on the Monday night game against the Chargers. Enjoy. By the way, feel free to caption the photo.
This current mess cannot be swept under the rug. Todd Haley told a national radio show that he had a conversation with Bowe on this subject Wednesday evening. As always, the head coach kept the details of that talk private. There’s nothing that Haley and Scott Pioli need to do on this matter, and there’s no action the NFL needs to take. But there are several actions that Dwayne Bowe needs to do and do immediately.
First, he needs to publicly apologize to his teammates on the 2007 team. Second, he needs to speak to the entire 2010 Chiefs team and tell them he knows he broke the code of a team and that it will never happen again. But more importantly, he needs to speak directly to Brodie Croyle, Kolby Smith, Rudy Niswanger, Brian Waters, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Jon McGraw, Jarrad Page, Dustin Colquitt, Casey Wiegmann and Ron Edwards. Those are the remaining players on the Chiefs roster that were part of that road trip to San Diego in September 2007. He needs to apologize to them and their wives or significant others. Bowe need to come clean with his exaggerations, if not outright lies.
D-Bowe’s No No … Weekend Cup O’Chiefs from Bob Gretz
Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe might have told the story of a girl being stashed in every room at the Chiefs hotel for a game in San Diego in 2007, but a former teammate denied his account Thursday.
"The things he’s saying are not true," said defensive lineman Jimmy Wilkerson, who played five seasons for the Chiefs, the last being in 2007. "Security is so tight at the hotels. They wouldn’t allow your family members to come up to the rooms, let alone have girls waiting in the rooms for you. If they did that, it affects the Chiefs owners, the organization and the coaches. It makes it look like the coaches let this kind of stuff go on, and I know Coach (Herm) Edwards did not do that.
"I don’t remember the San Diego trip specifically, but I can tell you there were no girls up on our level."
Former Chief Jimmy Wilkerson denies Bowe’s claims about goings-on at hotel in San Diego. from KC Star
When asked about the extra time he spent with Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassell, Bowe had the following to say per Mike Florio at PFT:
"It’s like an extra year with your girlfriend trying to map things out. You know, those quarterbacks, they’re like my girlfriend. No homo."
Here’s the wrinkle.
The term "no homo" has been around for a while and most recently surfaced in lyrics from Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West’s "Run This Town" rap single.
It has been widely accepted in the pop-culture realm as a term "said to show that you aren’t gay after saying something that sounded gay" according to Urban Dictionary.
Still, some in the gay community were offended by the term. And it certainly didn’t help that Bowe is a professional athlete who uttered the phrase on-air.
NFL Star Angers Gay Community with Term "No Homo" from Football News Now
This is the same idiot who bragged about players on the team "importing" women to hotel rooms for sex on the road. He’s also the same player suspended four games last season for violating the league’s ban on using performance-enhancing drugs. At least he cleared up his sexual orientation. I wouldn’t want anyone to think someone as moronic as Bowe is a homo. It gives us all a bad name.
Chiefs' Dwayne Bowe: 'No Homo' from OutSports
Rumors are flying that Dexter McCluster will move to the slot. He can force anyone to miss with the ball in his hands in open field. He’s undersized, so injury concerns will always be a bit of an issue. However, he’s worth a late-round grab provided it’s clear he will be used in the slot. You can never underestimate a person that runs with a purpose and the diminutive back has made a career of proving people wrong. He’s like a Wes Welker/Julian Edelman type back. Very, very shifty. Very fun to watch.2010 Kansas City Chiefs fantasy preview from OpenSports.com
I think hiring Romeo and Charlie Weis were smart coaching options. With that said I don't even think Weis is going to be able to help Cassell. I just believe Cassell was a product of a system in NE.
Let's just look at who he had around him in NE. The WRs were much better than Kansas City's, as Randy Moss and Wes Welker are two of the best in the league. Also he was playing behind a much better offensive line than he is now in Kansas City.
One plus for the Chiefs was the signing of Thomas Jones. He had a solid season for the Jets last year, but he will be playing behind a much worse offensive line.
AFC West Predictions: Do the Raiders Return to Form? from Bleacher Report
The Week 1 NFL odds have been posted, giving bettors a chance to get their wagers in early. We’ll take a look at each game and the line set, and give our analysis as to why the books likely set the spread the way they did. Some of these lines are going to move quite a bit before the season finally gets here, depending on what injuries take place in training camp and throughout the preseason......San Diego Chargers (-5.5, 45) at Kansas City Chiefs – The Chargers are 5.5-point road favorites over the Chiefs in the second of two Monday Night games. This isn’t the most glamorous match-up, but Kansas City is expected to be much improved in head coach Todd Haley’s second year on the job. He brought in Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss to serve as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. San Diego looks to see what life is like without LaDanian Tomlinson as they get a Week 1 Monday Night game for a second straight year.

Groupies and Stars
I don’t care if you’re a rock star or a sports star. Groupies have (and will always be) an everyday part of your life. Loose lips sink ships? Seriously? Are the players at that San Diego hotel really thinking DBowe said something that most already know exists? Give me a break ya’ll. DBowe was just saying how it is/was.
Everyone is just so ready to make DBowe a divo because KC hasn’t had one. I think the breaking of this story is just something to give reporters one small thing to clamor on because Farvewatch isn’t puttin` out right now. Everyone wants to try to make DBowe an LJ. I for one call this straight up comedy. Nothing more and nothing less.
Hey reporters and everyone else making such a big deal out of this… get your panties out of a wad! DBowe is genuine and has class. Sometimes the truth just hurts a little for those with naive ears.
Give me a break ya’ll.

I just want to know what the Arrowheadlines would’ve been without DBowes comments

seriously
It’s not like Bowe is in the news for something like Big Ben or L.T. for crying out loud!
Great players dont win championships.....Great TEAMS win championships
Bowe need to come clean with his exaggerations, if not outright lies.
That’s just naive and outright bad reporting by Bob Gretz. To believe that this kind of thing doesn’t happen is ridiculous. Living near San Diego, I’ve seen quite a few NFL players out hitting the bars, clubs, and strip joints. Of course it’s not all of them, but it’s definitely a major part of the culture of an NFL player.
"You can't be fat and fast too; so lift, run, diet, and work." ~ Hank Stram
I believe Mr. Gretz
He traveled with the team in three different decades…so I think I’ll believe him when he says Bowe is exaggerating, or lying. Plus, what he said is being backed up by several other players.
Read the whole article Gretz wrote. It’s actually quite good.
Bob Gretz
Said that yes they do import women, and yes they do sneak them in sometimes. He is just saying that he knows that there is no way that a whole floor could have been used and that there is no way that there could have been a woman in every room. I totally beleive him. He is saying that a lot happens, but not to the same extent as was Bowe is saying.
Smile, its the second best things you can do with your lips!
How does he know?
Does he go to every damn room and check? I’m sure Bowe’s exaggerating about the Girls in every room, but I’m sure at times their enough girls in one room to make up the difference, i just don’t report or say it as a fact. What happened to good reporting, lets hear some good stuff for a change.

although i do believe there to be some exaggerations going on...
i wonder if bowe was just assuming a lot of it or if the person who was setting it up was bragging to him that he put a girl in every room exaggerating about it and bowe being young and dumb took it as fact.
i think that the truth lies somewhere in the middle of what each side is saying.

On the Cassel comment above:
I myself have made no secret what so ever about my doubts surrounding Cassel’s ability to be anything other than the best backup in the NFL. That’ said, I need to come clean and man up about Cassel.
I will not say another negtive comment about him until he proves otherwise after all he did this offseason to become the man in KC. No other QB in the league can say that they stayed around their stadium the entire offseason, bulking up and learning the playbook and strategies in order to make the leap to the next level.
I stand firm that if your going to win Championships and not be a one and done SB contender you HAVE to have the QB to carry your team there. NOthing else is as singularly important as the QB position in the long term.
I would love to see us take Jake Locker next year, the competition is good for everyone involved. But at this point Cassel has done far more than anyone else’s QB in the offseason to be ready to lead this year. I couldn’t be prouder of him for that. With all his front end money he received, he could have celebrated with a long, long vacation anywhere on earth and spent his offseason acquiring new toys and playing with them. I know I would have.
But he didn’t. He stayed put and worked hard and showed not only his coaches and his teammates, but us fans as well, that he cares as much as we do about winning and turning organization around. And for that, he deserves nothing but praise. Good for you Cassel. I hope it pays off and you prove me wrong. You deserve my vote of confidence for your outstanding efforts this offseason. I am back in your corner and pulling for you.

that make Brodie the best back-up’s back-up?

on Locker next year
From what I gather he will be a top pick, probably #1 QB if he has a good year – so along those lines I hope we don’t get him because that means we had another shitty year and are picking in the top 5 again.

On the Bowe issues (plural).
Even in Bowe’s first two seasons where he was setting records for rookie receivers, he dropped a ton of balls. Something you just can’t do if your going to be the leading receiver on a team. The first receiver is expected to be a leader of men by his words and actions. Some teams don’t care about that evidently, but I do and our leaders do too.
If we are in a tight fight for a wildcard spot this season with no time on the clock and a last drive agains SD for a playoff birth, is Bowe the guy you want to throw the ball to? Not I. He can’t be trusted on or off the field. I was in the military and I learned a lot about comrodory amongst men (no homo j/k). You don’t break a long standing tradition of silence and trust amongst your fellow teammates by selling them out like he did on the news.
He embarrassed his teammates and us fans and this organization as a whole. I hope he finds a new home as soon as possible. I can’t stand him and never did like him as a Chief.
Good riddance Bowe. I for one, will be celebrating the day you leave KC forever. We’re better than that here.
Herm Edwards had no control over his team. He could sure spot talent. He did the best job of drafting of anyone during his tenure here with us IMO. But what he failed to do with them as a HC, is unforgiveable. He is NOT a leader of men. He was everyone’s buddy, not their HC.
It’s like parents who are their kids best friend, instead of being parents. He failed in his role as a leader and failed us as fans. I like Herm a lot. He’s a good person and I miss him. I do miss him. Just not as our HC.
Bowe's probably telling those kids how to fish for hookers on Facebook and Myspace.
What a terrible representative of our great organization.

I won't get into it...
You have to read it in the original “No Homo” post

good write up by Gretz.
Bowe needs to come clean and say that those players that are currently on the chiefs roster weren’t involded. Maybe that’s why he came out and said what he did. Because he knew none of the current Chiefs players were involved.
