Browns Called The Chiefs About Trading For Berry But Never Got A Call Back
One of the best parts of the draft is what happens weeks, months and even years later when we find out which team wanted which player.
Today we find out the Browns wanted Eric Berry.
How bad?
Enough to call the Chiefs on draft day about trading up from the 7th spot to the 5th spot. The likely compensation, reports Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, was a third round pick.
So what did the Chiefs say?
Nothing. They never called the Browns back.
Apparently a third round pick wasn't enough to dissuade the Chiefs from selecting Berry.
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli covets second and third round picks so that should tell you how highly they think of Berry.

Haha
we had to pick Berry, or he would have picked us!
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
I would hesitate to make conclusions about how much they value Berry
and instead make the conclusion that compensation wasn’t appropriate for the trade.

Must've valued him enough
To not only draft him but draft him at 5. I’d have a hard time believing they just drafted him just because and didn’t have a lot of value in him
I agree Justin.
A 2nd rounder and we would have done it for sure.

3rd about right
To move back 2 spots a 3rd round pick would be about right. But when the top player on your draft board in a position of need is there when you are picking you don’t trade down.
I might have done it for BOTH of Clevelands 3rds.
But not for just one.

If it were for a 2nd then, in this deep of a draft, HELL yes.

Not for a third rounder.
Berry is a good player. Since he hasn’t taken an NFL snap yet, it remains to see how good he’s going to be with us. However, the number 7pick and a third rounder isn’t enough compensation. Maybe a second rounder, or both of the third rounders, but not just one.

McClain and a 3rd would have worked
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
if they would have picked maclain at 7
i would have been ok with it. I’m good with where we are are at though.
Ha.

I love this
I love that other teams wanted Eric Berry so badly and I love the fact that the Chiefs had NO desire to return any calls about it because they wanted him in a Chiefs uniform.
Amazing.

I think you're ignoring the the value of the trade...

Appearantly KC had Berry much higher than McClain on their board
It’s good that we got who we wanted.

I have a feeling if this would have happened, we’d be talking about Bulaga being a Chief, whoopty-shit.

Even though we didn't take a single OT in the draft... you still think there was any truth to the Bulaga rumors.

If this report is true, I'm concerned about Pioli's arrogance...
This offer is good enough to warrant a call back. Perhaps it comes down to an extra 5-7th round in this or next year’s draft. If true, this is the second year Pioli has botched a chance to move down when the player taken provided little positional value. He seems to put blinders on when it comes to the players he covets. Meanwhile his counterparts from his days in NE are working these drafts masterfully.

"And the Chiefs line-up in a Wildcat formation with Eric Berry as QB. There's the snap...it's a short pass to Jamal Charles, he's at the 10 the 20 and it looks like he's going to be run out of bounds...LATERAL to Mccluster who is streaking up the field...TOUCHDOWN KAN-SAS-CITY!!!!"
When did he botch it last year?

Jets wanted to move up for Sanchez
KC could have gotten a few extra picks and still got Tyson anytime
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
If that player can help provide us with a Lamar Hunt or Lombardi Trophy?
Then, frankly, I don’t give a rat’s ass if, when we drafted him, he provided us with good ‘positional value.’
...I'm more concerned he didn't even bother calling back.
I wouldn’t want to get a reputation within the GM circles because somewere down the line, Pioli is going to make phonecall or two and I wouldn’t burn any bridges. Take 3 minutes and tell Cleveland you aren’t interested.

Exactly...
he seems to be very narrow minded which is dangerous. Call back and see just how interested Cleveberg is. Hell, move back two spots and take the guy that many had has the #1 safety.

ehhhh, maybe we had a bunch of other teams on the phone, maybe we talked to the browns prior
and they said we would get an offer of a 3 on the table…take it or leave it
we don’t ACTUALLY know what happened other than that we took Eric Berry.
so quick to judge, and say " they should have done this, they are narrow minded"…technically to jump to those conclusions off of very little information is fairly narrow minded.

That’s keeping your options open, the exact opposite of being narrow minded. Hate to say it but with each move Pioli looks more and more like Dayton Moore.

I dont think Pioli looks anything like him. He’s got Dayton by at least a hundred pounds.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
They only have 5 minutes to make the pick
All the article says is that Cleveland called offering up a 3rd round pick. It doesn’t say what other offers may have been on the table at the same time. As a practical matter, he can’t be on the phone with everyone at the same time, politely refusing or considering offers…and also confirming the pick with the reps in NY so that they card can be taken to Goodell in the 5 minute window.
Predictions:
This year will be better
You're clueless, 10 minutes in the first round...
not to mention that EVERYONE projected Berry to be there at #5 so he had plenty of time to call teams back and work a deal.
by HIV 2 Elway on May 17, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions
Oops you're right it's 10 minutes
that invalidates everything I said….10 minutes is an eternity to deal with an unknown number of interested trading partners.
But it doesn’t matter, you don’t like how the team is run so everything is going to be spun negatively by you. Keep clinging to every bit of potential negative gossip…hope you remain there if the team turns into a winner under Pioli.

it could be argued that every top pick (first 3 rounds), save the gaurd taken this year, was a reach.

because ANYTHING could be argued.
But a LOT of people who evaluate and report on football for a living didn’t think Berry, McCluster, Arenas, or Moeaki were reaches.

Perhaps this is what happens in the war room every year
As far as I am aware, none of us sit in the war rooms on draft day so we don’t know what the protocol is. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that reps for teams call and leave offers – and the GMs look at those offers and decide what is best for their team. Like jmc says, they can’t sit and exchange pleasantries with every GM that wants to make an offer. 10 min goes pretty fast.

When Pioli talked about the draft board with Clark Judge (wasn’t it?) it was pretty clear that Pioli didn’t KNOW Berry would be there at #5 until Washington made their pick.

Just because you never get called back after dates doesn’t mean you have to confuse your personal life with the issue. It’s not that big of a deal & regardless of small the circle is in the NFL there is nothing wrong with letting the fella’s know homie don’t play that. I don't...
have a problem with this. Eric Berry was the surest thing in this draft. McClain offers less of a positional value in my opinion playing ILB than Berry does at S. I would have done it if McClain ran a 4.5 in the mold of Patrick Willis, but he doesn’t have that kind of playmaking ability. Berry is going to make plays for us and can be a potential game changer.
I am 110 percent with you on the willis comparison.
if willis had been there….then yeah, I would question not taking him or moving back…but mcclain isnt willis…berry was this year’s willis at the safety position(top 12 all pro)
Team Pioli/Haley
I would have boo'd heavily if they took a 3rd for moving two slots in the top 7.
that said…I am so happy to have eric berry….yeah he isnt proven, no one from the draft is NFL proven…I love the guy…Period. his value is worth more than a 3, especially if hes the next big time safety.

No way.
And take who at 7? McClain? Our defense is already slow enough. I’m very excited that we have Berry now, and wouldn’t have had it any other way. The kid is going to be dynamic.

This whole thing sounds like Bullshit, to me...

See this is the difference between a professional organization
..and one that uses the media as a mouthpiece to make excuses for itself like Cleveland. This was clearly a statement they wanted to send to their fans. "Yeah, we know you wanted Berry. We wanted him too. We tried, but the mean old Chiefs wouldn’t call us back when we low balled them. I think the whole story is lame to say the least.
It's simple
They said after the draft that they felt good that 2-3 guys they had targeted would be available at 5. Chance that none of them being available at 7 is obviously more likely. We don’t know for sure who these 2-3 guys were, but if it was say Suh and Okung as the other two players then that would hold true. Browns didn’t pony up enough to warrant the risk, especially since they knew they would take Berry with the pick.
What does Pioli always say about trading picks?
You don’t trade up or down for the sake of trading up or down, you make the trades for a specific player. Berry was our specific player and the Browns wanted him – making that trade would contradict everything Pioli has told us about his drafting philosophy (and would have caused a riot on AP, which was obviously the deciding factor).
