What is our team identity going to be?

Warpaint2009_medium

via www.georgeblowfish.com

Ever since Scott Pioli and Todd Haley came to the Chiefs I have been wondering when we are going to establish our identity. Last year we heard alot about the "right 53" and getting good veteran talent in to coach up our core of youth already in place from before. We brought in handful after handful of Free Agent veterans to "push" the younger guys. Some ended up sticking for the start of the season like Mark Bradley, and Sean Ryan. Others like Zach Thomas, Amani Toomer, and Ashley Lelie didn't stick. After the jump im going to explain what our 2010 team identity could be.

Star-divide

Every team in the NFL has an identity, a fingerprint that is different from the next. When most people look at the Ravens they think of Ray Lewis and their defense. If its the Colts its got to be Peyton Manning and their offense. With the Cowboys its not even their players, its Jerry Jones. The 2010 Chiefs are in need of an identity. But lets back track a little, have we been without an identity the past 3 seasons? No we haven't, it just wasn't a good identity, it wasn't something that you would want to let be known. We sucked, we were horrible, we relied on old broken down players who became fan favorite because we had to cheer for someone. Our drafts didn't produce enough fruit to pay off on the field, and our coaching staff would have been put to shame by some college programs. Our teams back then had the identity and label across the NFL as losers. Do you think any kid growing up, just getting into football, would honestly look at the Chiefs from a few years ago and say "wow, I like them!" No probably not because when you are young you want to establish yourself as a winner.

Clark Hunt knew we needed to do something drastic to change the entire identity of the franchise, so in comes Pioli. After Pioli in comes Haley and the fiery approach to changed the foundation has been set. Pioli has a certain demeanor about him that I have yet to figure out. I know on here he is referred to as the "Don" and his image appears mixed with mafia, yeah its all fun and games, but look at that seriously, here is the meaning for "Don" from Wikipedia:

Don (honorific)

Although originally a title reserved for royalty, select nobles, and church hierarchs, it is now often used as a mark of esteem for a person of personal, social or official distinction, such as a community leader of long standing, a person of significant wealth, or a noble, but may also be used ironically. As a style, rather than a title or rank, it is used with, and not instead of, a person's name.

Simply put people respect Pioli. His identity is one of respect and its already leaving its mark on the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization. We drafted high quality, leaders. They may be rookies and unproven in the NFL but their track records at their colleges and hometowns are that of leaders. Hiring Pioli was key to this transformation.

This offseason we have seen a major change in identity. We snagged up Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel. Two individuals that have a knowledge of the NFL. Two individuals who have been successful in the NFL. These two men are going to leave their marks on the offensive and defensive sides respectively. They are known, respected, and thought about throughout the NFL. They are going to add to this teams presence even though they dont play. Other teams are going to look at our staff and say "okay, they got Crennel, and Charlie we have to watch out for them."

Our identity in 2010 is unknown yet. Maybe it will be that of winners, or losers. Maybe we will be bonecrushers, or a team that still cant tackle. Whatever our identity turns out to be I like the early returns, I think our identity is going to be that of a team on the rise, that you can no longer overlook. Its going to be a young team with a core of players led by well known coaches. If Pioli has any input on our 2010 identity I would think he would want this team to be respected. What do you think our identity is going to be?

that last season in camp all the lineman had to wear knee braces? Overall team conditioning and training is going to pay off.

a lot of teams do that with their OLmen...even in college

I agree on the conditioning part. The stamina alone almost won us some games last year.

and hopefully this year no one shows up out of shape

everyone needs to be taking snaps at their positions instead of lugging weights around on the sidelines. I want to see this team solid by the first week of the season, not trying to get it all together by week 3 or 4 or going into the bye week.

its good to know they are at it.

the writeup I fanshotted about Weigmann, its funny because in there they talked about Weigmann doing situps in the locker room and how there used to be pool tables and crap in there that have been removed! Im glad Pioli and Haley got rid of that stuff.

The Chiefs are coming into this year on a high note.

Great GM, and the coaching staff all the way down too the ball boy are some of the best at what they do. The players know this, they can feel the change in attitude, their confidence is growing by the day, they know they can be a great team now.

No longer do we have punks in the locker room spreading their disease( Oh L.J if you’re reading this, you’re the punk bitch). The players don’t have to worry about anymore coaching changes or scheme changes, they can just concentrate on being a solid fundamental’s team. The right 53 to play as ONE on each side of the ball.

I imagine that

our offense will be very exciting to watch as they start to hit full stride in this new scheme. Haley and Weis are gonna have plenty of wrinkles and movement in this system. The defense I’m still unsure of, but I’m willing to bet we have a couple of players that will make the big plays on D that we’ve been lacking for a long time.

No matter what, our team will be viewed as a hard working team in top condition. The Chiefs will definitely gain the respect of the league when the wins start piling up after the hard work and dedication these players are putting in. It might take us a little more time before we make the playoffs, but I’m encouraged by the moves Pioli and Co. are making to improve our team…

Flawless Detail

I want my beloved team to be StrongSmartFast - Disciplined. Good men on and off the field. I want there to be no weaknesses. I want a well conditioned group of men working in unison. A potent and versatile offense. An intelligent, instinctual and agressive defense. I want other players and organizations to envy our organization. I want opposing teams to quake in thier pads as the Chiefs step on the field. I want a team that I can be proud to say that I stuck with through the good and the bad. I want a team built with flawless detail.

I’m still a little weary of our run defense.

I know he ran a slow 40 but it was with a hamstring injury, he could make a good ILB run stopper.

Wasn't it only because of their secondary?

Look at their depth chart, it’s crazy deep on the defensive line.

by CPT.Caveman on May 13, 2010 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Crazy deep because they're trying to find the formula they lost when they lost Strahan.

I think THEY thought Umeniyora would step into Strahan’s shoes. Turned out that his success was more off of what Strahan was giving him.

Detrimental to the youth of KC

Nowadays, sadly, it is a rarity to find young kids Chiefs fans.

AP reader’s children-maybe not the case. Red and gold is forced upon them at an early age. For example replaying old Chiefs games while they are sleeping in their crib, or in more extreme cases while still in the womb.

Eric Berry is the kind that will change this once again for all of our young KC hater. They want to root for winning teams. It’s the cool thing to do.

This has hurt us very, very much.

Parental Rights to Force Feed Fandom.

I admit, I began my path to the Wolfpack as a “Chiefs fan by marriage.” type of fan. (2005 is when I would say I started watching KC football weekly, our last playoff season) until then, I believed football was a Saturday thing that noone outside of Norman Oklahoma was any good at, forced upon me by my parents, which was forced upon them by thier parents. While I was aware that there was football on Sunday, and even watched it, it was because I played fantasy football. I just never aligned myself with any team before for the Pro’s.

And as strange as this may sound, the worst Kansas City got, the more fiercely loyal I became to the team. I took the time to read about KC, watch old clips of games on the internet, follow thier offseason, etc etc etc…and I realized something…….I had fallen in love for a 4-12 team.

Is this common? Probably not. But there are newbown Chiefs fans every day who quickly grow up to be season ticket holders who drive from Oklahoma 8 times a year, fly thier Red and Gold Flag below thier Crimson and Cream one, and will continue the great American Football tradition of force feeding fandom to our children.

And as good as Berry is going to be…..I simply cannot wait to see what a defense is going to do when Charles and Arenas are split out in the backfield.

I think the term is "Laconic."

If you’re looking for a clever turn of phrase, look elsewhere. I liked the reserved, low-key way Patriots players used to talk about the game. If you wanted personality, you were asking the wrong guy, but they’d speak briefly about what they were about on a given play, without a whole lotta hoo-rah.
