Scott Pioli's 2009 Draft Mishaps.

Round 1 Tyson Jackson DE LSU: Scott Pioli took a 3-4 DE with the 3rd overall pick. Doesn't anyone beside me think that is absolutely crazy giving a guy 30 mill guaranteed to eat up blockers. But If I was the GM I would have taken BJ Raji who would have been are nose tackle of the future and we would have had a better run defense and would also give us a solid D line to build around. But no for 2 straight years Pioli passes on a premiere nose tackle one in Raji and another in Terrence Cody.

Round 2 She trade's are 2nd round pick for an aging linebacker and a one year wonder quarterback, who I think will never have that magical season he had in New England and will be lucky too be the 15th best QB in the NFL. But if I was Pioli I would have kept the pick or have wounded Matt Cassel and Matt Light so we would be secure on the offensive line with Albert and Light. So okay with the second pick, I would have chosen James Laurinaitis He would have been are starting linebacker and would give us an instant play maker at linebacker.

Round 3 I thought Alex Magee was an alright pick but there was an even better pick available in, Jarron Gilbert who at 6-5 290 is exactly like Jackson and would start from day one and eat up just as many blockers as Tyson.

Round 4 I liked the Washington pick and I would have done the same thing.

Round 5 Colin Brown was just a horrible pick im not sure this guy was a top 50 guard. And we would have just picked him up in free agency. So with this pick I would have selected Johny Knox he showed his speed at the combine and I knew he was a star and he did what I thought he became a star for the Bears  and he did this was a huge draft day mistake by Pioli.

Round 6 Quentin Lawrence he was another horrible pick. With this pick I would have chosen A.Q Shipley center out of Texas he would become or develop into are starting center and would finalize are line.

Just too let you know none of these picks where based upon there NFL stats just college and Combine tape.

I find it hard to judge the 2009 draft quite yet with the type of players taken.

I think with who the Chiefs drafted this year we should know by the end of this season whether it was good or not. Playmakers make plays

Yeah...

and he didn’t even make the roster last year. He was a practice squad guy and the Steelers, who drafted him, obviously still think they need a long term solution with their interior by taking Maurice Pouncey with their first rounder.

He split time with Ryan Pickett

considering Raji didn’t start his rookie numbers were pretty impressive. He was definitely a better pick than TJ, but Raji had character/personality concerns that I’m sure took him off Pioli’s board.

you are also making assumptions about the outcome of these players development.

Its tough to say the brown and lawrence picks are bad picks. They were taken late in the draft as developmental picks typically are. They look at guys that have the physical tools and potential to be developed in to great players. That takes time, more than a season probably. These guys were probably selected on a similar premise as Washington. Just like we will see what happens with Washington, we will see what happens with these two, as well and jake occonnell and jarvis.

What if

What we we need to debate about 2009 is would we have been better off not trading for Cassel and Vrbac. Draft Sanchez with the first pick, a LB with the second and McGee with the third choice. The key debate is Cassel vs Sanchez…at the time I was glad with the Cassel trade.

We’re looking forward now. We’ve got who we picked and that’s that. Personally I would’ve taken Sanchez at 3, saved our second round, picked Laurinaitis

my sentiments exactly:

Blame slotted rookie salaries for that

I believe a more conservative rookie pay scale is looming.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Still a bit early to tell what will become of Jackson and Magee.

Cassel is our starting QB….for now.

by Peterman700 on May 11, 2010 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

A couple of things.

1. Way to early to judge that draft class yet, after this season will be better IMO.

2. Tyson Jackson is not a bust. Since you’re all in to stats and everything consider this below.
Tyson Jackson Stats
TOTAL 38 27 11 0.0 0 2
BJ Raji Stats
TOTAL 25 19 6 1.0 0 1 .

That is total tackles, solo tackles, assisted tackles, sacks and passes defended. Who between these two would you rather have?

3. There is no guarantee that T. Cody or BJ Raki or Tyson Jackson wont be busts or wont be in the Hall of Fame someday, its way to early to judge anything on these players so far.

4. It looks like all you did for your “I would have rather picked” rants is go find breakout players taken from those rounds who did well. Hindsight is always 20/20 kid, foresight rarely is.

off the mark...

your stat comparison is invalid… why? jackson started 14 games… raji started 1… also being the primary starter jackson took the majority of snaps while raji was the backup and took far few snaps than jackson…

Jarron Gilbert, mentioned in the article, did NIL last year, too.

Let the ranters rant. Sit back and see how the team D does this year and next.

Why are people so in love with Cody's man tits?!

They’re disgusting. The mental image from that picture people keep posting of them are seared into my brain. And if he was on the Chiefs, I could only picture man tits eating up blockers on the field. Sweaty, flappy, smelly, and dirty man tits. How many blockers will be trapped underneath a single moobie?! Many… Just let it go guys…

Elite nose tackle? Elite moob tackle I’d say…

Other Arenas wish they could be like Arrowhead Stadium as it prepares to turn a new Page on Chiefs legacy. Rivals think they are going to be fine on a island of Flowers, but when they get hit by what feels like a Carr, they'll never be able to eat a Berry ever again.

I have to disagree with this
Colin Brown was just a horrible pick im not sure this guy was a top 50 guard

That’s because Brown was a Right Tackle at the University of Missouri, and an outstanding pass blocker. For a 5th rounder, this was a good pick, he’s huge, with tremendous upside, and was a stud in college. As a KU fan, I know!

by cpa913 on May 12, 2010 9:09 AM CDT reply actions

And yes, it's too early to grade this draft

We did get a pretty darned good kicker, though!

Agreed cpa

Brown has a place on this roster and will pay off being a 5th rounder.

Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

well

i would have rather had raji and if we are going to a 3-4 and need to reach on a dline man you take the nt. the second round trade though? well who would have started at qb then? yeah cassel was average at the best times horrible at others and his play declined as the season progressed but he stayed upright. croyle would have been out and who knows who would have been in there then. the other picks. well yeah hindsight is twenty twenty. other then that grammar nazis are retarted……………………………..

I love these worthless posts where

A previous draft class is analyzed and the writer says… "they should have drafted (insert a rookie that did well for another team) instead of (insert any pick from last year).

Hindsight is 20/20. That’s all that I can say about this nonsense.

I guess now we KNOW how Pioli feels about safeties that high... hahahaha

Yeah...

I'm sure someone out there was thinking that instead of Jackson (or Curry for that matter) we should have

taken Raji with our 3rd overall.

by Red N Gold Beast on May 12, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

specifics...

you are sarcastically specific… i was not… i was just commenting on the all too common “hindsight” post when someone attacks the 2009 draft choices… and technically raji was rated higher than jackson… so if there was a reach it would have been less of a reach… average rank for raji was 6-10… average rank for jackson was 15-20…

7-9 this year... 9-7 if we get lucky!! GO CHIEFS!!

by Abyssmal on May 12, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

The point is that NO ONE had us taking Raji before the 2009 draft.

A year later after Raji did well in his rookie year, it’s completely asinine to say we should have taken him over Jackson.

by Red N Gold Beast on May 12, 2010 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

asinine...

actually as it has been well documented, especially after this years draft, you build a defense from the middle out… your cornerstone is your NT, not your DE… unfortunately almighty pioli has refused to build his defense this way… we only have one draft pick in 2 years that adequately fills one of those all important “middle” spots and that is berry… why wouldnt you draft an NT before a DE? why wouldnt you use the 3rd pick in the draft for at least one of those positions? not addressing those needs is what is asinine…

7-9 this year... 9-7 if we get lucky!! GO CHIEFS!!

by Abyssmal on May 12, 2010 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

obviously

Pioli had a reason in his mind that he hasn’t seen someone that he wanted or that he was able to get to put in the NT spot. You might disagree with him on that. But you can’t say that Tyson is (or is going to be) a bust but say that BJ is NOT (or not going to be) a bust. Neither of these young players or any others are guaranteed to succeed or to fail at this point.

New body. Same soul.

by kabrink on May 12, 2010 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

the point is he has passed on all of the top NT prospects in the past 2 years… if you cannot even find a depth player at that position, while drafting what i will call a fish out of water (because i dont see jackson showing us his best until he has at least a mediocre NT next to him and i dont believe in shaun smith) is completely unnerrving to me… best case scenario to me (with jackson in mind) would have been to adopt dallas’ 3-4, keep dorsey on the inside, and draft a 3-4 end to play opposite of jackson… i know this is HINDSIGHT… but with that in mind… we could have had berry, mccluster and arenas… but also pick up carrington or any of the numerous DEs available after the 3rd round this year… of course its all speculation, but at least the front seven would have been attempted to be fixed, kept dorsey in the middle where he belongs and give the scouts an opportunity to look elsewhere to fix the rest of the defense…

7-9 this year... 9-7 if we get lucky!! GO CHIEFS!!

by Abyssmal on May 12, 2010 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I said D

because i dont think lawrence or donald washington will amount to anything. and as of last year no rookie really did anytrhing besides succop. I think magee was a steal in the 3rd round. and i think its too early to judge on jackson, but as of last year jackson showed no promise. so im saying D for now. but it could change after this season

Is there such a thing as a “huge draft day mistake” in round 5? Really just an educated guessing game at that point
