Our Franchise
I think we as Chief fans take our team for granted sometimes. I know that we haven't been winning the last couple of years but things are looking better for us. We have a young team that are ready to succeed. We have one of the most beloved and proud franchise in NFL history. There has been a lot of talk about how some of our key positions need to be upgraded. I think that maybe a couple upgrades would be nice but a chance to our younger players to develop would be even nicer. I was wondering how far our players are off from the main franchise records. My findings are posted after the jump.
Quarterback
Len Dawson owns our franchise passing records with 28,507 yards and 237 touchdowns in 183 games. Although, with the touchdown record comes the interception record with 178. After only 15 games Matt Cassel has a long way to go. Cassel is ranked 15th in yards with 2924 and 16th in touchdowns with 16. In contrast Tyler Thigpen had the same amount of games and about 300 yards less than Cassel but 2 more touchdowns. Trent Green owns our completion percentage record with 61.9% (based on at least 15 games played). Do you think Matt Casselhas a shot at any of our QB franchise records? I think that he started with us too late in his career to even have a shot. He has talent just won't have enough time.
Fun Fact: Bill Kenney has our franchise sack record with 191.ve an
Runningback
Priest Holmes was a beast with a franchise record 6070 yards and 76 touchdowns. The amazing thing is that he only did that in 65 games played. Larry Johnson couldn't beat either with 75 games played. Jamaal Charles is ranked 21st with 1477 yards. He does own the rushing yards per carry though with 5.7. Do you think Jamaal Charles has a shot at the rushing yards or rushing touchdown franchise records? I think he stands a shot for both records especially with how many yards per carry he gets. Can he last over that many seasons? We will see!
Fun Fact: Marcus Allen had 15 fumbles in 932 carries for us.
Receiving
Tony Gonzalez owns our receiving yards and touchdown record with 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns. Dwayne Bowe ranks 16th in reception yards with 2606 yards. Does Bowe have a shot at beating receiving records for our franchise? I think he needs to work on the drops to even stand a chance. Tony Gonzalez is one of the best to catch the ball period. It will be hard for even the most elite to beat his records.
Fun Fact: Dante Hall had 9 reception touchdowns and 14 fumbles.
Those are the 3 main areas that are comparable. After looking at those stats do you feel more confident or worst? I think our bright spot right now is at the running back position when it comes to these 3 areas. I will continue to say that I'm very confident in our young team. You've seen the progress we made at the end of last year. You seen how much progress we made this off-season. I think that most of you don't realize we can't fix every problem in one off-season especially when you have a million problems to fix. We just need to develop our young players and I do believe that our coaching staff will push them in the right direction.

I think it's given that JC has the best chance to break the records
After that I say Bowe then Cassel. Cassel’s a little too old to have a reasonable chance at the records and he doesn’t have quite the skill Dawson or Green had. The only thing standing in Bowe’s way is drop balls. He lacks concentration at times. That’s something Haley will help him improve

Cassel would have to stay around quite awhile
And be a part of a sustained and very successful offense to have any shot at breaking Len Dawson’s records. It would basically have to be the ‘03 offense’s production for a five or so year period along with several other good years sprinkled in. Obviously I am skecptical of that happening.
Clearly JC has the best shot. As long as he stays healthy and gets the carries he should break it. The kid is getting over five yards a carry. Yards rack up quickly with that kind of production.

I agree with Trent on JC. I don't think I can vote for Bowe at this point since he has
to prove he can hang on to the clutch passes still. I also firmly believe that Haley obviously didn’t know how great Charles could be in the beginning. I think we judge him too harshly for that. He had a lot on his plate and had a proven RB in LJ at the time and felt he was our best RB. I understand that completely.
I don’t think he was unaware that Charles had talent though. I think he is strict on the basics. As he should be. Charles was a fumbling machine before Haley got to work on him. That is why he didn’t get the nod earlier on IMO. Once he proved he could hang onto the ball and not fumble and get some of the basics down, he got his chance. He made some silly mistakes early on.
Some of his fumbles were because he didn’t have the presence of mind to remember to put the ball in the right arm before running with it. Your supposed to carry the ball on the side closest to the sideline in case of a fumble ala the Broncos game where he fumbled it out of bounds followed by a penalty.
In his early attempts, he carried the ball where he felt comfortable which wasn’t the right thing to do. Once he got some of the basics down, Haley felt he was ready to go and now we have our star RB.
Cassel is an unproven unknown. Believe in him if you want or don’t. Both opinions have merit. But Cassel doesn’t have years of tape to back up either opinion. So he is an unproven QB as of now. This year will tell all. I’ll reserve judgement til’ the end of 2010 on him.
Good post. I didn’t know those stats myself. As always my friend good post and good morning Trent!
Morning Kray. Agreed
A lot of questions will be answered at the end of the season. Can DJ crack it? Is Matt Cassel the best thing since Trent Green? Is our OL really as good as we believe? Can Romeo get this Defense working?
As far as i’m concerned this season is a clean slate. Their are no previous stats. This is the first chapter of our own story. New Arrowhead Stadium. New Kansas City Chiefs. This season is the first chapter of what will be a long, exciting story

Charles
I could see Charles breaking the yardage record. I don’t know about TD record. Platooning may limit the chance to score if he is pulled on GL situations.
The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.
Best chance
1. Jamaal Charles
2. Dwayne Bowe
3. Matt Cassel
R.I.P. Derrick Thomas. The Chiefs and the World have never been the same since your untimely death.
