Chiefs Coach Todd Haley Hopes To Find The Next Patrick Crayton
Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com has a nice rundown of the Chiefs local pro day that took place on Thursday. We talked yesterday about what exactly a local pro day is and Looney has a nice write-up on it as well.
One thing that caught my eye from his article was about Patrick Crayton, the Cowboys receiver.
Crayton is from Desoto, TX so he attended the Cowboys local pro day a few years back when Todd Haley was in Dallas.
I'd say the local pro day worked out for Crayton and the Cowboys.
They ended up using a seventh round draft pick on him. Through three NFL seasons he has 196 receptions for 2,883 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Not bad for a local guy, right?
There were a number of receivers working out for the Chiefs at the local pro day yesterday, including D.J. Hord. I mention him because he comes from mine and Chris' alma mater -- Rockhurst High School.
He's quicker than hell and did very well at Rockhurst. He went on to Notre Dame -- recruited by Charlie Weis (and Ty Willingham) -- before getting injured and eventually transferring.

My Dad coached Jeron Bastid
I think he could be a sleeper and I hear he busted his ass this offseason to get workouts from teams. Great guy
DJ Hord
Hord was a stud at Rockhurst but was never really able to regain his speed after tearing his achilles tendon at ND
so he wants to find a guy
who made one of the biggest drops in recent years for the cowboys?
im not a fan of patrick crayton. i dont know many cowboy fans that are.

Is Severino still the coach at Rockhurst?
Go Chiefs!!!!
Severino was winning State titles when I was there too ...
… and that was a LONG time ago.
RHS ’87
Blue Springs South grad here
so don’t expect me to shell out any love for a high school that can recruit anyone within a 30 mile radius and give them scholarships for athletics AT A High School.
Thorman Bros, you know i love you guys, but the rock is crooked
Having to pay for school limits the pool a little
Besides, I don’t think BSS is hurting for football players. Didn’t they win state a couple years back?

Well you just proved you don’t know what you are talking about. Get your facts straight before making outlandish comments like that.

I just don't think it's right that they can have a kid from the kansas side when a missouri championship
That also begs the question...
Why should someone that lives 20 yards away from a school be excluded from going to a specific school?
Go Chiefs!!!!
Hey I was one of those scholarship recipents
…but it was for soccer haha.

I can say with 100% certainty that there has not been a single player in the history of Rockhurst athletics to receive a scholarship for athletics whether that is for Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Wrestling, Lacrosse etc.
what about being allowed to recruit kansas kids to play in MO championship games
missouri championship games should be for missourians
They're not allowed to recruit
And they don’t (as shown by zero charges for that).
by Joel Thorman on Apr 9, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions
so you're saying that in any of there past MISSOURI state champ games, they've done it with out kids who live on the K side?
no thats not what he is saying
The students from Kansas come to Rockhurst because of their long standing success in both academics and athletics. They are not recruited to go there, they willingly choose to go there because of their unmatched reputation in the Kansas City Metro Area.

Not to mention the location on state line...
I've been rapping for about seveteen years okay? I don't write my stuff anymore I just kick it from my head you know what I'm sayin? I can do that. No disrespect but that's how I am.

Also
I don’t see how you think having kids from Kansas would be some kind of advantage for them. As a whole, Kansas high school football is one of the weakest in all of the country.
by TimGrunhard61 on Apr 9, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions
i'm not saying it's an advantage
i’m just saying that you shouldn’t be able play in a state championship for Missouri, if you live in kansas
Why?
Why shouldn’t they be allowed to? The school that they attend is located in Missouri, therefore they compete for Missouri championships. I do not see what is wrong with that. Please explain
by TimGrunhard61 on Apr 9, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions
It's a principle issue
if you don’t see something wrong with it, I won’t be able to change your mind. I just think it’d be like a kid from mexico playing on a texas team and crosses the border each day to and from school.(a little extreme but you get the idea) It just urks me. But being a rockhurst man as I can tell you are, you well continue to defend this practice. Even though every other school in the area frowns upon it
Quite frankly
Everyone other school frowns upon it because they are jealous of Rockhurst’s success…

Call it what you want..
and like it or not, that is the root of all the hatred for Rockhurst

Trevor Releford
So MR Grunhard are you saying that Trevor Releford pays full tuition to Miege like everyone else? I think a beef from some of the public schools is that the private schools give out reduced tuiton to premier athletes from around the country. I don’t have any hard facts but if it smells rotten it usaully is….
by loyal Chief fan on Apr 9, 2010 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions
I can not speak for Miege as I do not know their situation
But as far as Rockhurst goes, students who can not afford to pay full tuition can qualify for a “work-study” program. In most cases, the students in this program would get to school a couple hours before schools starts or stay after school and assist in cleaning the school, mowing grass, or other kids of physical labor. In turn, the students would receive money taken off their tuition based on how many hours of work they have performed. This program is available to any and all students that meet the criteria. Yes, some of them happen to play sports at Rockhurst, but the overwhelming majority do not.

Dang, I figured with a name like “TimGrunhard61” I figured you might know the Miege situation a little better.

think of it like how Rhett Bhomar “worked” at that Car Dealership before he got booted to SHSU
And I don’t see anything wrong with it, because there is absolutely nothing wrong with it

how many footballers
on college teams are from that state? probably not a lot. Many midwest colleges have kids from California and Florida, no big deal. Why should it be any different for a private high school?
New body. Same soul.
Its a private school
Kids can come to a private school from anywhere in the country. Hell if somone wanted to commute from Iowa every day to come to Rockhurst High they could… in fact there were a couple of kids who did do that, commute down for the week and stay with relatives and then go back out of state on the weekend. Rockhurst draws kids from everywhere because of its acedemic and athletic petigree. Kansas kids shouldn’t be denied the oppotunity to attend that school just because its in missouri, nor should they have to not parcitipate in athletics… thats just silly
I guess since my public school brain was not nurtured to such high standards
I cannot comprehend your arguement
I do not believe that anyone is questioning your intelligence.
There are a few things that can be done to combat ‘this recruiting’. The first would be to stop playing Rockhurst. Actual recruiting happened to Lexington Catholic in Lexington KY and as a result they played football further away, and didn’t get to play in the state championship. Lafayette ended up winning the state championship(for the school size)… yet who is to say that they were the best team in the state since they didn’t play Lexington Catholic.
Then in Louisville there is Saint X, and Trinity… these 2 schools are football powerhouses(almost always winning state) producing NFL talent such as Brian Brohm(most of whom end up at U of L or UK). These kids start playing in 4th grade in Catholic grade schools. Whom latter go on to play for Trinity or Saint X. (much of this is similar in Kansas City.. kids go to Cure of Ars and end up at Rockhurst or St. Thomas Aquinas).
I’m sure that Blue Springs has beaten Rockhurst plenty of times, and I’m sure that those wins are just that much sweeter knowing that they played and beat a good team vs. never getting the chance to play a solid team.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Well it's technically in MO
cross the street youre in KS. Good ’Ol State Line Road :)

Just thought I'd point out...
Crayton has been in the league for 6 seasons, not 3.
woooooooooooooot! we're drafting JD Hord!
good thing he didn’t play at UMKC, huh!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Rockhurst, eh?
I remember watching some football games between Rockhurst and some Kansas schools. Pretty fun. I have a friend out in CA who went to Rockhurst at the time Tony Temple was still there, and he was pushing Temple as being a pro-ready guy as a sophomore in HS. Kinda funny, but Temple did turn out fairly well at Mizzou.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
i think
it would be great if someone became a story to tell kids here in kc. hey it don’t matter where your from work hard play right and you could be the next? from right here like he or she was. what’s better than giving a kid something to work for???
If I follow Irishking's thinking,
we Missouri residents shouldn’t go to Kansas for anything. If Nebraska Furniture Mart is having a big sale only Kansans could buy there. Sounds like the same point to me.
its hard to find a Diamond when everybody is looking for one
and you dont need to find one there enough reciever talent in the first three rounds to go sniffing around for somebody who comes once every five years.
Not for Nothing, but you guys are selling some Wolf tickets on this Rockhurst thing
rockhurst has a huge pool of kids to basically choose from, anybody who is in the know will tell you that.
go to some pee wee football or junior high football, it may not be the type of recruiting where you sign a letter of intent. but there is former alumni everywhere talking the school up and trying to get kids to come to Rockhurst, You can’t do that at a public school.
Last but not least, Rockhurst does not have to accept you. So they know full well that the kid they are bringing in is a good athelete, weather it is spoken or not.
If that is not an advantage i dont know what is,
if you want to know what the best football program in the state is look no further than Jefferson city High school, more state championships than anyone, and would kill Rockhurst almost yearly if they played.
.
You are correct that Jefferson Cit has more state championships than Rockhurst (Don’t know how much longer that will last). But, Rockhurst and Jefferson City actually have played each other at least once a year every year since 1985. Rockhurst has beaten them every game in the 2000’s. In fact, Rockhurst beat them twice this past season.
