Chiefs Looking At Competition For Mike Cox
[Editor's Note: Regarding the title -- that's what she said.]
One of the hallmarks of the Patriot Way -- as explained in the book Patriot Reign a few years back -- is that every player on the roster could be improved. Yes, that even means the fullback.
The Chiefs have worked out a couple of fullbacks already this offseason and now they're expressing interest in another.
According to a journal entry on Draft Board Insider, the Chiefs and Bucs have expressed interest in Rutgers FB Jack Corcoran.
I hope I get drafted, but if I don't I believe I'll latch on with a team as a free agent. My agent, Rob Roche, has told me several teams are interested in me. Among the teams are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs are very big on competition including those at the bottom of the roster. The Patriots didn't win multiple championships because of the superstars but because the middle and end of their roster was stronger than anyone else's in the league.
I'm not saying Corcoran, Cox or any of these other fullbacks brings a championship. I'm just saying that spending time trying to upgrade a position like fullback is a classic Pioli type of move.

i want
to take one of the top FBs in the draft with one of our 5s. FB is a great position for value in the later rounds and we could certainly use a better FB.
jon conner
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* KC will NOT draft a LT in the first round, and the draft WILL be heavy on defense

Yeah, SillyHayDay, check out the link in the article about the other fullbacks. There’s two of them we’ve got so far.

+1 "right 53" all over him
We shouldn't be here. I can't be within 50 feet of a school......or a chucky cheese.
Wouldn't Competition for Mike Cox...
be considered a sword fight? I hope Mike Cox wins.. who else’s name will provide us with joke material next year?

I can't see how Cox sticks around...
He played for Gailey at Georgia Tech and really isn’t that good, I can’t see their being any loyalty to him…
Also sidenote about value, I was listening to ESPN radio on the way home from work yesterday and they were talking about Kickers. I really do not see how they do not get more love, they can single handedly ruin a season with one kick. If you ask me Kickers are similar to Closers in baseball, and the good ones make serious bank. I never understood why a team would be so cheap with them, they usually lead their teams in points.

The margin between a good kicker and a great kicker is miniscule.
The margin between a great kicker and a crappy one is small. They are also a bunch of head cases. Take Nate Kaeding for example. His stats suggest he is a great kicker but his record has proven him to be not so great, since he is typically the reason the chargers make early exits out of the playoffs. What ever happened to Rackers? Dominant today out of work tomorrow. Kickers simply are not worth paying for. A lot of guys can kick field goals but damn few can do it reliably. Me personally, I wouldn’t even waste a roster spot on one let alone pay them much. If all you can do is kick a ball, go play soccer.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
wouldn't waste a roster spot?
So you would never kick field goals, extra points or kick off?
I agree most of them aren’t worth much (relatively speaking), but Vinatieri is as well as some others. I just can’t believe the elite ones aren’t more in demand.

What rule says you have to have a designated kicker?
Fourty-five dressed athletes and nobody can kick a football. I don’t believe it. Teams already punt too much instead of going for it.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
do you mean 53 dressed athletes?
And why not have a full time kicker, because you can never have too many centers.

45 on game day.
You might be able to have too many centers, but i’m not sure what that number is. For kickers the numer is 1.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
that is absolutely silly. you have an extra point and field goals, but you also have....FIELD POSITION
you need to put the ball deep on kickoffs…you may need an onside kick at some point…and if “all you do is kick the ball” you could lump punters in there…so we go for it all the time and LOSE FIELD POSITION…lets get rid of colquitt and his coffin corner punting that probably won 2 of 4 games last year and kept us from getting blown out by pathetic teams like the raiders who only need to get to the 40 to kick a 57 yard field goal and nab 3 points….
this is part of the game. field position and special teams not only wins football games,…but its the third aspect of the game itself…offense, defense, special teams…Find a coach who doesn’t view it as important, and you find a coach who is not in the NFL or any major college program…
yeah I got the stories from my father of his days when they had to go without a punter, or kicker, they always went for it etc…but thats not the NFL…and thats not 2010.

KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
Most of what you say is true.
I am simply proposing that there are players on the team that can adequately perform kicking duties as well as other tasks, like blocking, tackling, etc. on non kicking downs. Why handicap the roster with one trick ponies.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
That's hardcore old-school, and I salute you for that.
But it sounds like you’re saying Mike Cox should get familiar with kicking balls, and that just makes me shudder. Besides, I like Succop. I’m sure that Mike Cox likes Succop.
The path to Victory is made of losers.
Really had nothing to do with Mike Cox.
Just an argument I like to make because once you let go of the tradition of dedicated kickers, it makes sense. For example; It is time to make a decision for mandatory roster cut downs on players. We have 2 players that are pretty much equal but can only keep 1. You get 3 kicks each from 10 thru 50 yard line, loser takes a hike. Tell me players on the bubble are not going to work on their kicking game.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
Depth is key...
See the championship teams of the 49ers and Cowboys. Strong up front and on special teams. I think we have two good young corners. If we upgrade our pass rush then they will really shine. Our outside linebacker play really needs to improve on both sides.

I'm on team Mike Cox, he shows up gives it his all and is only gettin better, it'll only be his 3rd year.
He’s not flashy but aside from one drop I didn’t see him do anything wrong last year
I like mike cox, but I did notice that Castille outplayed him towards the end of the season.
hes a tough guy though, I hope they figure out a way to use him…I like that he works hard

Mike Cox has been giving it his all.
But his all isn’t enough to satisfy the way we need it to. I worry about Mike Cox’s stamina, towards the end there it wasn’t as good as it once was. We need to audition and see if there is something better than Mike Cox.
Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!
so you are worying about ..
Cox Stamina ? .. humm interesting.
He did well at the combine. He finished near or at the top of nearly all the drills among the tight ends. He finished atop the tight end standings in the vertical (40) and bench reps (30) while finishing second in the broad jump (10’0). He also posted a solid 4.37 20-yard shuttle. Could be the sleeper/overachiever teams are forever looking for in the bottom half of the draft.
