"It just lights up my eyes to see Rich being successful," said junior safety Wes Davis. "For so long he's been a huge part of our team. He's not the flashiest player catching that 60-yard bomb, but he's the guy on third-and-3 that catches the little out that keeps the drive going. He's one of our leaders - we elected him captain for a reason."
With Jeff Jagodzinski the new coach and cowboy Steve Logan the new offensive coordinator, quarterback Matt Ryan was unleashed, and Gunnell became one of Ryan's favorite targets, catching 64 passes as a sophomore. It was his 42-yard reception down the left sideline at Clemson that sealed a 20-17 comeback win and clinched BC's first berth in the ACC Championship Game.
"Rich is a playmaker," said Shinskie. "When the game is on the line, we're calling a pass to him. He's in the meat of the route on most of our passes. He's just a great route-runner. He's really smart with the game. ... His knowledge of the game and being aware of where he is on the field, he always seems to make the right decision.
"It's great having him as a leader."
In October of 2009, Boston College played Notre Dame. After the game Rich Gunnell and Jimmy Clausen had words and Jimmy pushed Rich and walked away.
Here is what happened in Gunnell's words
"In the beginning of the game, we were warming up, running on the field and [Clausen's] out there chirping and talking all this trash and he pushed, I think, Justin Jarvis. He just pushed him for no reason, and I just looked at him like, 'What are you doing? Who do you think you are?
"He's just sitting there still talking and then afterward, he was trying to be all friendly. I was like, 'I don't want to hear it now.'
"It just rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like what he did. It just seemed like he was a little fake toward the end of the game because they won. I know if it was the other end of the stick, he'd probably be saying the same thing to me."
