As we all know John Henderson is a big man, a VERY BIG MAN. With that said, he might not be our answer at NT? At 6'7", he is likely to tall to play NT effectively. He likely lacks the leverage at that size when it comes to going against most centers (Rudy Niswanger at 6'5" range would a fun match-up for the Big Cat though).
Even though he is 6'7", his great size (330-pound range) would likely make him a suitable NT. He would definitely take up at least two blockers with ease. Jack Del Rio once said he was the first true 3-gap DT he had ever seen. :D
With all of that being said, his likely best position for the Chiefs in the 3-4 is at DE. His height is perfect for a 5-Tech or 3-Tech DE in the 3-4. On top of that he would likely lose some weight if he were to ask to be a DE in our system. Word is he played a good 3-4 DE last season when used.
I'm sure many are scratching their heads and asking themselves what that does to Glenn Dorsey? It has already been hinted by Scott Pioli that Dorsey could see some time at NT this coming season. I'm sure we could have a rotation of Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, John Henderson, and Alex Magee manning the DE spots. This would also give KC the ability to put either Dorsey or Henderson in the NT rotation with Shaun Smith and Ron Edwards on likely passing downs.
Time will tell as John Henderson will be in Kansas City this coming Wednesday. At this point I don't think it really matters if he is a NT or a DE... we just need him dearly in Kansas City period!
