2010 NFL Draft: Chiefs Sign 11 Undrafted Free Agents
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli was planning on signing 10-12 free agents. As it turns out, he split the difference and signed 11.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Sunday that the club has signed 11 rookie free agents: DL Garrett Brown, LB Justin Cole, TE T.C. Drake, OL Tyler Eastman, WR Rich Gunnell, WR Jeremy Horne, LB Michael Johnson, RB Tervaris Johnson, OL Nick Landry, OL Lemuel Jeanpierre, OL Andrew Lewis.
We knew about Garrett Brown, Rich Gunnell, Jeremy Horne, Mike Johnson and OL Andrew Lewis.
We'll have more on some of these guys soon.

Athletic pass rusher used at DE and LB for the Spartans. Flashes some pass rush ability, but this is most effective when standing up. We don’t think he will ever survive with his hand on the ground full time (240 lbs.) but he flashes the ability to bend and make the ninety degree turn around an offensive tackle. NFL defensive coordinators can have a lot of fun with his ability to line up at a couple of spots. We feel that he is an ideal NFL 3-4 OLB prospect

the Byrd from last year or whatever that the chargers took and didnt make it pretty much...talented WR that prob wont make it back
Team Pioli/Haley
I'm gonna pull for Sheffield
Troy has been known to put out some solid to great DE/OLB prospects, Cole is kind of small for the OLB position as it stands right now, only 240lbs

You’re fine man. We need LB help, if he can play OLB opposite of Tamba that’s fine by me.

cole and sheffield
are projects let vrabel teach them maybe come in as pass rushers on 3rd down you never know could turn out to be decent pickups
I'm cool with UFA's being projects. Not 5th RD picks
I think with this draft being as deep as it was we could’ve gotten really good players all the way through the draft
Uh that's setting the bar a little high don't you think?

not for this particular draft.
Plus since we’re a real stellar team, the last thing we need r project guys
Even in this draft, 5th rounders are still 5th rounders
they are not immediate starters, nor instant playmakers(99% of the time). They are players that have tools to come in and contribute and maybe turn into a starter.

Look...
for us to sign Mathias Kiwanuka in free agency next year. Pioli likes big veteran linebackers and Mathias is a perfect fit. The Giants can’t afford him and he plays both DE and OLB for them. Good character guy too. Rome wasn’t built in a day, this is a process.

Neither was the Patriots Dynasty
Everybody seems to forget that their real rebuilding process was started in 1993, and it took three wasted seasons to rebuild that team back to respectability, and another five seasons before they became a dynasty. Took three generations of the Parcells tree to rebuild that team (Bill Parcell to Bill Belichick to Scott Pioli). Of course, the Pete Carroll era set that team back 2-3 seasons.
Point is, it took almost an entire decade to rebuild that team from nothing to Super Bowl champion.
We are still in the stage of Romulus and Remus.

Eh, I'm no Herm fan I'd just place more of the blame on King Carl.
Herm’s not a good coach, and he’s even worse as an analyst, but Carl is the one who let this team fall apart.

ohhh
im with you i wouldve loved to see them get someone opposite hali but in the 5th round not many stud rushers out there there more guys with potential to be stud rushers if groomed right and id say with crennel and vrabel its possible
Rookies aren't proven. They're rookies.
Proven pash rushers come from our own team, or other teams (retaining or signing FA’s).

Johnson also played Defensive End in high school
So even though he played middle linebacker in College, it’s likely that he could play both inside or outside linebacker for us.
Imagine that – Pioli signs a versatile player!
Also an interesting quote from CBSsports – “Smash-mouth football player who is far better than where he is likely to be drafted. 3-4th round talent who may actually go undrafted.”
I hope Michael Johnson makes the team and pushes for time at ILB
Draftnasty had him rated as their #110 prospect. Comparing him to other ILB in the draft, they had Micah Johnson at #134, P Angerer at #141 and S. Lee at #147.
Damn you CBS!
Now I’m going to think Mike Johnson is going to be the John Randle of 3-4 linebackers until he breaks my dreams for him.

And that ain't all
Johnson broke the school record for most rushing yards in one game on the least carries with 208 yards on just eight carries in the intensely competitive Florida high school ranks.
A good article about Minnesota TEAM CAPTAIN Garrett Brown
Probably will play a big part for us at NT….

11/02/2009 – BIG TEN WEEK 9 CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Garrett Brown, Minnesota, SR, DT, set career highs with seven defensive stops and three tackles for loss, while also forcing and recovering a fumble to help Minnesota knock off Michigan State. The senior defensive tackle pushed the Spartans’ offense back six yards with his three tackles for loss, and six of his seven defensive stops were solo tackles. Brown led a Gophers defense that held MSU to 124 rushing yards, 84 of which came on a reverse in the second half. The Connecticut native collects his first career weekly accolade and the third for a Minnesota defender this season after teammates Lee Campbell (Sept. 6) and Nate Triplett (Sept. 13) were honored earlier this year. – Big Ten football
Cole
Overview
Cole was a part-time starter who bounced between linebacker and defensive end before his unforeseen rapid ascension on scouting boards as the 2008 season progressed.
National media attention focused on the gaudy numbers by Jarron Gilbert (drafted by the Chicago Bears) and Carl Ihenacho or the talented defensive back duo of Christopher Owens (Falcons) and Coye Francies (Browns). Meanwhile, Cole quietly developed into a productive prospect, doubling his previous career totals with 68 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. The former defensive end didn’t easily adjust to playing in space but moved more confidently and fluidly as the season progressed and earned second-team All-WAC honors.
With offenses turning their attention his way in 2009, Cole struggled to adapt. His numbers dropped (58-9-3.5), as did San Jose State’s confidence in him, as Cole was substituted often and even benched at times as a senior.
Cole’s tapered frame, long arms and athleticism continue to intrigue scouts. In failing to take advantage of the momentum he gained as a junior, however, his stock has slipped significantly.
Analysis
Read & React: Has developing instincts as a linebacker. Struggled early in 2008 with the move from defensive end to outside linebacker. Improved throughout his junior season. Quick to accelerate after making a read.
Run defense: Improved in 2009, but remains a significantly raw prospect. Overruns the play and isn’t quick enough to break down and tackle on the cutback. Good straight-line speed and agility to avoid blocks. Improving with his hands to disengage when met by blockers but needs to gain strength in his upper body.
Pass defense: Good athleticism to eventually excel in this area. Good initial quickness and shows lateral agility and natural change-of-direction skills in space. Remains too high in his backpedal and needs to get better depth in his pass drops.
Tackling: A bit stiff when changing direction, especially when having to tackle smaller, shiftier ballcarriers in space. Improved as the season went on and he became more comfortable with his role. Lunged and led too often with his shoulder early rather than breaking down and wrapping securely. A work in progress and flashes some pop as a hitter.
Pass Rush/Blitz: Good burst off the snap as a pass rusher with his hand on the ground. Good bend to get under the offensive tackle’s pads and can close in a hurry off the edge.
Intangibles: Rangy build with room for an additional 10-15 pounds of muscle mass without a significant loss of quickness. Made significant improvement from August to December of last year, with the athletic upside to warrant a close look in 2009.
NFL Comparison: Shawn Crable, Patriots
Only a 95 rating at best.

Couple of Scouting Reports from Wes Bunting
Garrett Brown DT, Minnesota
NFP Grade: 5.3
Scouting Report:
Garrett Brown: No. 99, DT, 6-2, 310
A thickly built defensive tackle, Brown displays good natural bend and power out of his stance. Does a nice job creating leverage off the snap and pushing the pocket as a pass rusher. But he doesn’t use his hands well and struggles to slip blocks while driving his way into the backfield. Lacks ideal awareness/technique off the ball in the run game, allowing opposing linemen to get in on his frame at the point of attack. Is easily sealed away from the football and can be washed out of the play. When he gets off the snap count on time, however, he can be tough to move. He does a nice job holding up on contact, but he’s simply too inconsistent to be considered anything more than a developmental free agent with good size.
Grade: 5.3
Justin Cole OLB, San Jose State
NFP Grade: 5.8
Scouting Report:
Justin Cole: No. 93, OLB, 6-3, 240
Cole exhibits good initial burst as a pass rusher and has the body control to cleanly change directions at top speed. He does a nice job using his length to slip blocks and is sudden in space. He exhibits a good feel in space and knows how to quickly close on the ball. He isn’t overly instinctive reading his run/pass keys but gets out of his breaks quickly and wraps up well inside. He possess a long set of arms and does a nice job of securing tackles. But he has a tendency to play too high in all areas of his game and struggles to take on blocks.
He isn’t stout at the point of attack and doesn’t generate power from his lower half. He is easily sealed from the ball. He needs to do a better job dropping his pad level as a pass rusher. Cole is routinely pushed past the play or sealed when asked to take on linemen outside. He struggles to keep himself clean in traffic and doesn’t use his arms well to disengage. He runs well for his size and can make plays in pursuit, but he needs to learn to play with a lower base and to use his hands if he ever hopes to star in the league. He could draw interest as a 3-4 or 4-3 OLB.
Grade: 5.8
and we did get
the best pass rushing DB in the draft. with how many DB’s we can put on the field now that might be something to watch.
Young, dope & flashy.
Im still pretty irritated we didn't try to draft the Rhodes Scholar Safety Myron Rolle out of FSU... He and Eric Berry would of been a great safety backfield for the Chiefs
by I 7Vo7V I Z3TA on Apr 25, 2010 4:25 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
So would Eric Berry and Darren Sharper
I really liked Rolle too and was bummed we took Lewis instead. But they did it for a reason, and I think its because Lewis is supposed to be pretty solid against the run. Hope that’s the case.
Sharper and the Lombardi, DO IT!
I really wanted Rolle too
but my guess is there were just too many questions surrounding the fact that he hadnt played football in over a year and also questions about his desire to play football and how long that desire will last
One evaluation
I read was that Rolle was an ‘in the box’ only safety…like Pollard.
... ... ...
Darren Sharper would be nice but he’s getting up there in age tho… and the Chiefs decided to take Kendrick Lewis cuz he has that raw talent u look for in a safety… he can do everything… stop the run, intercept the ball and also lay bone crushing hits like Berry does… I hope Lewis starts at FS and Berry at SS… Or maybe we’ll pick up a better FS before camps starts.

Maybe a good, project NT in Brown.
I was worried about not nabbing an NT or ILB. We have Shaun Smith, and he may be the answer, in a rotation with Edwards, but I am glad we at least addressed the position. Brown is supposedly a good character kid and has excellent work habits. Maybe somebody to start grooming. I was also looking over the roster, and Derek Lokey, a rookie last year, and listed at a DT, at 300 lbs, may be somebody they are also looking at, to bulk up a little, and maybe try out for a shot at NT. Hell, he lasted a season, so they must have some faith in him. Before everybody does a public, Taliban style, execution of Pioli and our staff, look at our present roster, (many players who have just been forgotten, but were rookies last season), our draft picks, and remember this rebuilding through the draft started about 3 years ago, and alot of the young guys should begin to play to their potential this season. That is what building through the draft is, remember? We also have new Coaches, who can analyze talent, and know who is going to fit their schemes, will likely improve their techniques and will likely play of alot of our young guys . Crennel said “there is alot of young talent on this team already, to build around”, when he first came here, remember? Don’t base everything on past performance. We have no choice but to trust the leadership and coaching we have been raving about for 4 months, so let them do their jobs. If we still suck, I will eat another of my infamous shitburgers!
There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.
Lokey was not a rookie last year (he'd bounced around the team the year before, too)
Lokey has about all the weight he can carry at 300. He’s strong as any player on the team, though, which gives him a shot. I just don’t see him as an anchor.
