I have really enjoyed the posts regarding the draft since it's ended. Enjoyed Joel's main page article about the praise we're finally getting for these draft picks we just got. I'm obviously very excited about the whole thing, but many still aren't.
I've listened to both mainstream viewpoints on this draft. I've tried to explain why I believe this was a phenomenal draft for us. Still others have tried to explain why they feel we messed up this draft completely. I given this a lot of thought. This morning as I was reading the posts, something occurred to me that I had not considered before. And I wanted to share it with you.
I do not mind one bit if you agree or disagree. But we're all part of the Chiefs family and all part of the same AP family. So let's just talk. You tell me what you think about this viewpoint, good or bad.
In my estimation, and I'm sure in yours too, we came into this off-season with a lot, and I mean a lot of problem areas on our team. There was virtually no part of our game, other than the kicking game, that was up to even average NFL teams standards. Hence, we were ranked in every department exactly where we deserved to be ranked. So, in essence, we had problems on the offense, defense and special teams. We sucked. That pretty much sums it up right there if your honest about it.
Now I know you doubters have already heard all the crap about how we needed play-makers and speed and reliable, good character guys ad nauseum. So let's chuck those reasons right out the window.....{{whish}}... good bye! Now, while all those reasons are solid reasons and those needs are real, there is a much bigger picture here. A much more important reason why you should feel excited about where we are going as a team and a franchise.
And here it is;
Let's all man up for a minute and just talk as friends (ladies, you do whatever it's called when ladies man up).
Look, we all went into this knowing full well that it was going to take TIME to fix our destroyed team. Let's snap back to reality for minute now. We won 6 games in 2 whole seasons. Derrick Thomas was able to get 7 sacks in one game all by himself. Our entire defense could only muster up 10 for an entire season. You with me? We were horrible.
Now, in rebuilding or building a winning franchise, you have two choices as I see it. You either want A) instant gratification, which means WIN A SUPEBOWL NOW!! OR GET OUT! or B) I do not want a one hit wonder team. I want a team that will be dominant for years and years to come. If you want A, you are going to be in for a painful few years my friends. If you want B, then you have to be patient and wait for it to happen.
That being said, we did need to address all three facets of our team. Offense, defense and special teams. With only so many picks in the draft, and only a relatively small percentage of those picks actually succeeding in the NFL, It would reasonably take a few drafts to completely remodel a losing team into a winning team, over the long haul. So the clock is ticking here now.
We could have went defense heavy in this draft. And we could use the help. And it would have helped. Or, we could have went offensively and let the special teams rot away for another year. Either way, with only so many picks to choose with in each draft, your faced with the dilemma of not only fixing an entire team with only a limited number of picks, but also with doing so in the shortest amount of seasons possible. That's when you wish you could somehow magically fix two out of the three parts of your team in one draft, but what are the chances? You would have to nail the draft to accomplish such a feat. And that's exactly what we did.
We not only have acquired the tools to be a good offense, but we have acquired the tools, if used properly, to be a sensational offense. And at the same time, we completely fixed our special teams. We took care of two out of the three problem areas on our team, that desperately neededed fixing.
They took the quickest route possible towards fixing this team for good. Knocking out 2/3 of our issues in one draft. Phenomenal job. Now we need to concentrate on our defense. You don't think they know that? You don't think their tirelessly pursuing that even as we speak? Of course they are. Their careers depend on it. But even if it takes another draft to get the defensive side of the ball fixed, so be it. We weren't expecting to build a winning franchise in two seasons were we? Really? I hope not, because that's not realistic.
So either way we went, whether offensively or defensively, we would still be needing help somewhere else. Just like we do now. Only it's not the part of the team you wanted fixed first. That's okay. It's 6 of 1 and a half dozen of the other. All that matters is that they get it fixed sooner rather than later if at all possible.
Maybe, since they scout players years ahead of time, they knew that next years draft pool would not have this kind of talent offensively speaking. But next years draft DOES have a NT and C that they feel are better than anyone else they could have taken in this draft. Their not going to take a NT just for the sake of taking one, to please us. Would you go with a different pick this year if you knew you could get Suh next year? Why would you do that? You wouldn't. If you were targeting Suh next season, you wouldn't draft a guy to play the same position you are planning on drafting Suh for next year. What a waste of precious draft picks that would be.
We are not in Arrowhead with our leaders. We don't know who they may be targeting in FA or thru trades still? What if they have had for awhile now, (which they don't, it's an example) a deal on the table with NE for for Wifork but were waiting to see how the draft panned out before pulling the trigger? What if we didn't know about it before the draft, simply because they didn't want everyone to know and risk screwing up the draft? Then how would you feel if they would have drafted Cody to make us happy and then traded one of next years draft picks, for example, to get Wilfork? THAT would have been stupid. The point is that we don't know the big picture.
Maybe the way you or I wanted them to draft would have screwed all that up? Just because we don't know what all they are still scheming, doesn't mean they have failed us. You have us losing all season long again, and as far as I know, the season isn't here yet. Shouldn't we wait and see what happens first, before we crucify Pioli?
