It is evident through the 2010 draft that Scott Pioli feels the answer to the chiefs woeful run defence is already on the roster. The chiefs did not draft a NT or ILB, two concieved needs. While the NFL is rapidly becoming mainly pass oriented, the chiefs cannot afford to give up 152.5 rush yards per game. Pioli plans on making our pass defence our strength. Ultimately, with young exciting RBs like Knowshon Moreno and Ryan Matthews coming to the AFC West, Scott Pioli will have to have a strong run defence as well. That's why I think he thinks the answer to that is already on the roster. I've already posted how I think Scott Pioli will move Glenn Dorsey to NT (I don't like the idea). Now I think he plans on shuffling our LBs around.
Mike Vrabel has been a great player in his career. His strength is at OLB. His understudy, Andy Studebaker, showed two things against Pittsburgh last season. One, that he has a knack for making interceptions. Two, that he can't rush the passer. Those two things indicate that he is more suited to ILB, where you make interceptions and aren't required to collect big sack totals. This move allows new rookie Cameron Sheffield, Who was known as a pass rusher in college, to backup and learn under Vrabel at OLB. With Studebaker at ILB, There is a lot more competition for the two starting ILB positions, and as Pioli said in his post draft conference, competition makes the whole team lift their game.
The draft is a clear indication that Scott Pioli believes that their already is a lot of talent on this team. It's just they are never challenged for their starting position due to a lack of depth. A classic example is the drafting of Javier Arenas. At first I didn't like this pick, but i'm beginning to see it as a good move. Last year, Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers were the only two CBs on the list who had starting quality. Brandon Carr had no challengers for his position. Therefore had no motivation to improve because his position was garaunteed. Now with Javier Arenas, Brandon Carr will be pushed for his starting position and improve.
Competion WILL bring out the best in this team. What do you think AP. Should Studebaker be moved to ILB to bring out the best at that position? Will we see a top 20, even top 10, defence from the chiefs this year?
