I will only discuss Pioli's drafts here in KC. Last year was a bad draft, there is a chance Jackson and McGee could become good players in the next few years. Besides the two DE's we only came away with a kicker. For a team that is as talent starved as the Chiefs, that is a horrible draft.
As for this year, I give a C-. Pioli earns a passing grade only by not taking a OT in the first, he picked a great player that plays a position of huge need for the Chiefs. The second round is where the wheels fell off the wagon. We passed twice on Cody, it is well known that we have a huge hole at NT. McCluster will have his contributions to this team, however he is more suited for a team with less holes- kind of like Minnesota taking Harvin last year. Arenas atleast plays a position of need, so I am less upset with this pick. We needed another corner and his return ability is a plus, but we needed a NT and an ILB much more.
We had the chance to take Berry, Cody and Spikes. That was my mock w/o trades. Before everyone starts talking Man Boobs or Eye Poks, Cody was drafted by Ozzie Newsome with the Ravens. Newsome is widely known to be a great judge of talent and an excellent drafter. Spikes went to the Pats, I don't need to mention anything else about that. If we were going to reach for McCluster, then we should have traded down with Carolina and gained a pick. Carolina wanted to move ahead of Cleveland to insure they got Clausen.
I can handle the third round pick of Asamoah, he is a solid pick.
The trade up into the third to grab this TE is dumb. We can't give up a pick to take a injury prone TE that was the 11th best TE prospect on the board at that time. After this trade the fifth round picks were less shocking. After two years of drafts I am getting use to picking guys that will never perform on the field.Pioli is no draft expert.
