2010 NFL Draft: The Polls Don't Lie!

From the FanPosts. Nice work Krayfish. This deserved a bump. -Chris

While most of AP is happy with our picks, many of us are not. The comment threads about this draft bear that out. Much of AP is just flat unhappy with this draft thus far. You don't understand what Pioli is thinking. Or why he is doing this to us. "Why in the world would Pioli have picked these guys"?

I know this because I have read the approval polls for our draft so far. Surprisingly, a LOT of you are disillusioned by these picks. Well you shouldn't be. Would you like to know why?

Then come on.....

Star-divide

With the first 3 rounds over, I couldn't be happier. So much makes sense now. A lot of things we have all talked about on here for months now, have been explained. Pioli's mastermind has shown itself. So has Haley's. Not just this year. Last year as well.

Last year, Pioli hired Coach Haley, which I believe is going to pay massive dividends before it's all said and done. Haley came in here with no HC'ing experience. And I think it's fair to say that when he fired Chan one week before the season started, many on AP thought he made a huge mistake. But, he didn't.

You see, I firmly believe that Chan was not capable of designing the type of offense that Haley was looking to establish here. It's not an insult to Chan by any means. Awhile back, I did a couple of posts highlighting Coach Haley. I learned a lot about him. One thing I can guarantee you is that he is a genius. He has an incredible mind. There's no two ways about it. And I believe he has an idea in mind, a very, very specific idea in mind, for a type of offense he wants to run. I think he wants to unleash his brainchild on the NFL and make a name for himself.

I think he wants bring a somewhat new style offense to the NFL. Much like when the so called, west coast offense was born. He's a mad scientist on offense. Yet, he's never been allowed to create something all his own. He has never been a head coach. All head coaches leave their mark on the teams they coach. They all have a coaching signature, so to speak. And we have yet to see Haley's signature, because he hasn't even had a chance to really coach yet. He's been playing fireman since he got here. He's been putting out brush fires from day one. This team was a disaster when he got here.

All those high draft picks did not pay off. We were worse under Herm than we have been since...well....ever! He himself even once said he was trying to keep this place from burning down. Personally, I can't believe that with the rag tag bunch of coaches and players he had shifting in and out of here all season long, that he even won 4 games.

Haley had to let Chan go like he did, because he had to get what few core players he felt he was going to keep after his first year, on the same page. Moving in the direction he wanted them to be going. Moving into his vision for an offense. For a team. I don't think Chan was able to read Haley's mind so to speak. I don't think he could "get" it, when Haley would try to explain the crazy type of offense he wanted built here in KC. It happens in bands all the time. One guitar player and singer may not be able to gel musically, while another couple just "get" it the first time they play together. You either click or you don't. If you can't play together because your styles are so different that neither of you knows how to get in sync with the other, it can't work. You are forced to look for another singer or guitarist, as the case may be.

And the first time you bring in a new singer and he's your guy, everyone just knows it. It just comes together on it's own. At some point everybody stops playing and looks at each other and shakes their head yes. You don't have to say anything. You just KNOW that your going to make some special music if you work together. Again, it just clicks!! You just KNOW. But if it's not going to work out, you also just KNOW that too.

This explains why we got a NT and center in FA.  Because we are most likely not drafting them in this draft. We need to understand that they could not possibly rebuild this entire disaster of a team in one draft. Not  possible. So knowing the type of offense Haley wants to build here, they already had their guys in mind that would help them accomplish that goal. I'm sure they already have their NT and center picked out for next years draft, if indeed they do not draft those positions today. So they went and got Shaun Smith and Casey Weigmann, and I feel they believe those guys can hold those key positions down for a couple of years while we concentrate on other parts of the team.

But think about how special this draft has been when combined with FA thus far okay? We have a new super talented RB in Thomas Jones. A new high quality lineman in Lilja. A new center in Weigmann. A new slot receiver in Dexter McCluster (I love saying that). Oh yeah, and McCluster can also double as a wildcat option, a decoy or a threat on reverses and double reverses. Oh wait. He can also return punts for TD's. I think that's it. No wait. I almost forgot. He's the fastest guy on earth! Or if he isn't, you can tell him that when you catch him.  Every time he touches the ball, he has the potential to score. He is a dangerous play maker.

But that's not all. We also picked up Javier Arenas. Who just happens to be a polished CB AND a dangerous kick returner. Who also happens to be extremely fast and talented and yes, has the potential to score every time he touches the ball. He's that dangerous. He's that talented. He's that versatile. He can also be used in the wildcat, running game, and reverse or trick plays. He has great hands just like McCluster too.

And they all have Charlie Weis as their HC. And no one is going anywhere. Weis will not get replaced one week before the season starts. So Cassel will have a consistent  coach to teach him how to be great. He won't have to relearn a new system one week before the season starts this year. And Cassel has to be thrilled. He has a line. A legitimate line to protect him this year. He has a serious double threat running game to help alleviate the pass rush with the addition of Jones now too. And he finally has two high speed, dangerous targets with good hands in Chambers and McCluster. And don't forget we also took care of the weak TE end position with this draft too. Yet ANOTHER offensive weapon that can catch and hang onto the ball. And he's one of the fastest, if not the fastest TE in the NFL. We won't be leading the league in dropped passes this year.

As if that wasn't enough, we also won't have to start from our own 3 yard line after every kick off and punt return this year either. We have two guys that can take it to the house every time they get the ball kicked their way. Or at a minimum, you can count on starting on the other side of the 50 at least once in every game with those two guys returning kicks for us. Can you imagine? We won't have to go 93 yards to score every time we get the ball!! That's huge.

On defense, we got Eric Berry. Enough said. We got a new NT. I imagine today we will grab an OLB to complete the defense for this draft. And you guys have to know there will be a historic ripple effect from this talent rich draft pool. With so many highly talented draftees that are going to come into the league and start this year, there will be a lot of veterans getting cut to save roster spots and money. You think Okung was picked at #6 so he can sit on the bench? Get real. I would say he will be replacing someone this year. And that someone will get cut. I think we are going to see an unusually high amount  of very talented veterans at key positions getting cut and traded shortly after the draft. In other words, we're not done yet folks.

They have addressed our RB depth. Our receiving corp. Our offensive line. Our defense. In particular our safety position was just seriously upgraded to a whole new level we haven't seen here in a long, long, time to say the least. Another problem solved. No more long plays against our Chiefs this year. And our defense will get to rest a lot more since we have some talent on offense and should be able to maintain long steady drives that will wear out opposing defenses. My how the tables have turned in KC. The Chargers won't be bullying the 2010 Chiefs around!!

They definitely just sealed the deal on special teams man. And that's huge. Starting field position IS the difference in almost every game. They addressed the coaching staff issues. They have completely rebuilt this team. Every facet of this team has been upgraded.

We won't even recognize this team in two years. Hell, we won't even recognize it this year. And all these draftees have several things in common. Which gives us a glimpse into the type of team we are going to have here in KC starting now. They are all highly intelligent. They are all positive locker room guys. They are focused on football first and foremost. Their not troublemakers. Their super fast. Their extremely talented. Their versatile. They have a great work ethic. And my favorite, their future superstars.

Listen, you can argue which positions we needed help at the most, but it doesn't matter. You can sum it up much quicker by just saying that this team lacked real talent overall. But not anymore!!

Think about it, it's not called the Bowl. It's called the Superbowl. And it takes superstars to win Superbowls in this era. It just does. And we didn't have that type of talent here before now. Guys, we just loaded our team up with superstar players that can score at will from several different positions. So don't waste this beautiful moment in Chiefs history by second guessing every move we made in this draft. ENJOY THE RIDE!! THIS IS A SPECIAL TIME FOR US!!

Tell me what a defense is going to do, if they line up and see Jones, Charles and McCluster behind the line. And they also see Bowe and Chambers as wide outs. And whoever else we might still end up with before season starts for that matter. Who do you defend? If we do double reverses or fake double reverses who do you cover? You have to react if McCluster has the ball because of his speed and talent. So do you bite on the reverse and go for McCluster or do you hesitate to see if he is going to pitch it to Charles? Not with his speed and talent either. Or what if Berry is back there in a similar line up? He can pass. He can run. He runs like an elite RB. He has a really good arm too. He could be used in fake double reverses and pass it down field to Chambers.

The sky is the limit, and I believe Haley has his core guys he feels he can work with now. You just wait to see next season. Not that this season won't be a blast and won't be fun, because it will. We have a whole new team again. But this time, it's loaded with talent. But after they have a year together in one system, with one coaching staff and set of players, look out. Haley's going to unleash"the hounds Smithers." It's on!!!

We just got legitimate people. We just got real. We just got dangerous. Can you feel it??!!! Aren't you excited to see the direction we are going. It's all starting to come together finally!! AP....OUR TIME HAS COME!!!

NOW LET'S GO TAKE THIS DAMN DIVISION!!!

yes, SD needs to go back to the basement of the AFC.

Completely agree

However I don’t think Charger fans care. Even when their team is on top they don’t seem to care. Which is why I love the Chiefs and Chiefs fans.

Wow could not have said it better myself

People need to settle down and quit overreacting just cuz Pioli didnt select the guys that YOU wanted. Guess what Pioli & Co know a hell of a lot more than any of us do and I will trust a 3 time sb winner & 3 time NFL executive of the year over anyone else.
I for one am happy with the draft and the offseason so far and can not wait for opening night MNF, which I will be fortunate enough to be going to

Where are people getting their ideas about who they would want the Chiefs to draft?

I mean, have you met these kids? Talked to them one on one? Did you attend their pro days? Did you fly them in for a private workout? How many college games and hours of film did your coaching staff watch? That people think they know as much as Pioli is laughable. Keep in mind that Pioli is picking kids who will respond to they way his staff coaches. What good does it do to draft a talented player if he has a Brandon Marshall-like mentality and won’t respond to Haley? Also, none of us knows if this draft was a good one or not and we won’t for a couple or three years. Trying to grade it now is just stupid.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

thats what im saying!

with all those weapons on the field at once makes it very hard to cover, also you have deep threat speed and gaining yards after the catch kinda plays too, i mean putting bowe, chambers, charles and mcluster as wideouts and jones in the backfield thats sick!
On defense with arenas i mean damn he can cover the slot and blitz also with a upgrade in the secondary it allows you to blitz the house and come more often while playing man or zone blitz without getting toasted and it also allows you to run blitz to stuff that too . those who dont like these picks are idiots a good secondary allows you to be so much more agressive.

The giants had a great line and a suspect secondary but they rushed the passer the jets had a average rush but a good secondary and was one of the best defenses cause they could defend the pass and blitz and the eagles are the same way you saw what happen when they lost dawkins and sheppard and now brown they got toasted on there blitz , but when they had a secondary the blitz was very affective, our offense has many weapons now and cassel with thrive that way , he will spread the ball around and everytime we get the ball in someone hands it could be massive gains or touchdowns. i like what the chiefs so far so keep it coming !

Can't wait to see....

I can’t wait to see Haley continue to moves players around pre-snap and watch the defense adjust to dex, charles and jones in the back with bowe and chambers out, and then put c harles and dex at the line on 4 wide. What package do u put up against that. Put a LB on dex or charles, OK. see ya later! I’m very excited for the energy and ability to break it on every play.

Mornin Crawdaddy,

I see you found your rose colored glasses. We did draft a bunch of speed. If that’s Haley’s vision, so be it. The pundits will say that Pioli had a “so-so” draft, or just add a big “?” when they talk about the Chiefs. That’s still a good thing, just like the draft.

In the end, if you trust Pioli, you just smile and put on your red glasses. We’ll see soon enough whether Haley and Pioli are geniuses.

We are building a fighting force of extwaordinary magnitude.

I suggested we trust Pioli and Haley before the draft began. Be patient. We will see a much better team this season.

"We need to understand that they could not possibly rebuild this entire disaster of a team in one draft. Not possible."

Truer words have not been spoken. The team Pioli inherited was terrible. Terrible. Terrible. You can’t totally reload a virtually talentless team in an offseason or two. Our old friend Carl Peterson said it took five years to get to the Superbowl. I think he’s generally right, 3-5 years is what it takes (it took Sean Payton four years).

Also, why would anybody trust Mel Kiper’s judgement over Pioli’s? How many rings does Kiper have?

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

you know

I have never understood why we put stock in anyone who calls themselves a draft expert. The reality is that 99% these guys have an extremely limited view of these players. They only see breif clips and look at the combine numbers and make their mocks off of that. While that can work if you are talking about the first round, after that you really don’t get an idea of who is better than who. The other 1% (specifically the McShay’s and Kiper’s of the world) are all guys who have never played football. It is really expect a couple guys who havenever played a down in the NFL to understand the thinking of a GM?

by KC_HAWKEYE on Apr 24, 2010 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

agree, except maybe Mayock

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Apr 24, 2010 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Dunno why people are unhappy

We’ve picked up playmakers on each side of the ball, including special teams.

Picking up the NT bought us some wiggle room to not only go after guys the high character guys and leaders they preach about, but also big time playmakers that are electric with the ball in their hands. And speedy! We really hadn’t had that for a few years until JC emerged

And isn’t that one of the biggest knocks against us, in addition to our core defense — that we needed playmakers and fielded one of, if not, THE slowest team in the league?

I’d say these picks address a lot of those concerns. Rome wasn’t built overnight, nor can a shattered football team be completely built in two drafts.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

EXCELLANT WORDS MY YOUNG BROTHER!

I would have written this same thing, but you beat me to it and Im happy you did!!!

This team is on top of the hill now looking at its destiny which has not been any brighter since Marty arrived 20 years ago.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

We gotta get away from all this genius talk

These two are good football guys plain and simple. What I really like about this draft is it has given us a real idea of “the process”.

Any one think Donald Washington is gonna get converted to a Safety with the addition of Arenas? THey seem to like Mo Leggett (why I dont know) but CB depth has been added but Safety depth is lacking with McGraw and Page the other 2.

as for this year’s picks, let’s give it some time before pronouncing Pioli the greatest Draft Guru ever, let’s wait until we hit 8-8 before claiming the team “fixed” or that Haley (or Weis/Crennel) are the bestest ever ever ever

Chargers Defensive Coordinator walks in the room. Looks at his defense. Kind of shrugs and sighs. “Ok, guys….We are about to have our first game of the season. It doesn’t get any bigger than Monday night. We are going to Arrowhead which will be jammed packed. We have to figure out how to defend Jamaal Charles, Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster, Dwayne Bowe, and oh yeah, Chris Chambers.” Half the defense walks out…

Teams that go against us won’t think it’s another bye week! They will actually go home and night trying to go to sleep. They will have to game plan all week and struggle with how to cover all our weapons. I LOVE THIS!

Nice post Kray

I was reading comments from the 3rd shift and decided that I wanted to write a positive piece, so I went to the Fan Posts to check to make sure that I was not duplicaing, and read this. Great stuff, and Rec’d.

I would append that I really feel like getting great value at Guard is being overlooked. Lilja is a good pass-blocking guard, but not very good at run-blocking. That does not describe a right guard to me, it sounds more like a left guard. That upgrade will also help center, which also helped itself. All of this helped Cassle.

Funniest thing I’ve read all day. Ran a 4.56 at the combine but, if there was ever a better example of “football speed” it’s Dexter McCluster. Go to NFL.com and watch the film on him at the Senior Bowl. Ri. Diculous.

Alrighty had some time to read through this

I got to agree with ya, our defense seemed to be turning around last year. Actually had a pretty decent year(led the league in 3 and outs) does it need work? you bet!

Our offense struggled mightily all year, we addressed that. How will these picks play out? Can’t say. We got speed, we have play makers, we have guys who can come in and contribute.

Nice write up Kray rec’d like you deserve

Good post.

What I was arguing yesterday. They drafted speed and play-making. You can’t pick that up in FA’s. Veterans will be coming down the road to fill in some other gaps. This will turn out very well. Anyone who thought a super bowl roster would be drafted is just crazy. The talent level just went up and so did competition for spots. Makes the whole team better.

Can’t say we will suck for next year until our roster is set in September. In November everyone was saying we had to draft 3-4 OL. Not too many cared about that when the draft started because of FA. It all works together.

great post kray.

just want to point out a couple things however….

okung is replacing a recently retired walter jones, so there is no one to pick up from that move, but I get what you’re saying and totally agree. vets will get cut and we will be on the floor to eat them up like a homeless man.

also, Cassell had a pretty good line and randy moss and welker to throw to. yeah, they went 11-5, but cassell basically gave up the same amount of sacks…..hope weis can change that….

we have a lot of versatility and it will make for creative play calling. should be fun to watch.

glad that our return game is going to be addressed.

it is still to be seen how we stop other teams’ te from going over the middle to pick up every third and long….

perhaps just having crennel will help this.

still, optimism is abundant. can’t wait to see the UDFAs and the soon newly free agent additions!

I like almost everything

though a small correction – Seattle has their incumbent LT retiring, so they won’t need to cut anyone to make room for Okung.

I totally agree that this was a GOOD draft. No, we didn’t take the people that most would think are building blocks of a normal team, because WE’RE NOT MAKING A NORMAL TEAM. Weis and Crennel have devious plans to remake the Chiefs into their image of a new style the NFL has never seen before, and is unprepared to deal with.

Obviously, Crennel is satisfied with Smith (his guy) at NT and told Pioli not to draft one. McCluster is just the man for Weis. The Arenas pick baffles me, but that just means Crennel got some crazy shit cookin up that I’m not foreseeing.

The Chiefs are, at very least, very very entertaining again.

This is a weak argument but

I don’t think we can really take last year as an example of our drafting scheme (though it’s all we have to go on) Pioli came in late and had nobody working with him like he has now.

I understand your point, though. What I meant was I really think Crennel saw at least as much potential in Smith as in any of this year’s prospects, he knows the guy already, and he’s seen development. Personally, I’m ok with that.

Trust Pioli. I love the McCluster pick.

Pioli and co. are either going to be geniuses (I think they will) or they’ll end up with egg on their faces. I still think a lot of these guys could have been picked up by trading down, in later rounds, but, overall, I trust in Pioli’s judgement. Granted, free agency isn’t done, and if we can get a solid ILB and a big big splash (ala Sharper) we could be doing some amazing things in this offseason. I really hope these guys pan out.

i learned my lesson last year

hitching my wagon to individual players and not a “team” vision. of course, it doesn’t help when the team is more secretive and guarded than area 51 and fort knox combined. but, this year does give a lot more insight what the powers that be want to do. looking at this draft without much emotion, looking at the players KC picked up…they aren’t trying to build a good team, they are trying to build a DYNAMIC team, and that’s exciting.

i don’t always agree with Kray’s POV, but, taking his FanShot last night, spending the time looking at the 4 young men KC is entrusting the franchise’s future with, i think he’s absolutely correct.

I hope for our teams sake that you are correct but I just can’t see these picks working out this season, if they do it will be in a year or two. I’m not saying that they are great picks, but besides Berry, I’m thinking they need some time to develop – especially if this new offense is unleashed on the world

by Sean-O on Apr 24, 2010 2:02 PM CDT reply actions

i personally think it will be sooner (as soon as next year) as opposed to later

in terms of the offensne. really, the only new “piece” being added is McCluster (MAYBE the TE pickup), all the others have been in KC or are world class vets (Thomas Jones). but McCluster is pretty damn dynamic and adds a completely new dimension to the offense.

but you are correct to temper everything with a dash of “wait and see”, we all should put a little of that seasoning on our KC Strips.

Krayfish, this is your best post yet. However...

I have to humbly disagree on one major point. As a fan, I’m not in the mood to absolve Haley or Pioli for making some major blunders. While I agree that letting Chan go was the right move, I agree that many of the major decisions that they made were for the betterment of the team in the long run. I think they make a bunch of rookie GM and coaching mistakes early when they pretty much blundered the timing on everything. There’s no way they didn’t see the need for some of those changes day one. They wasted too much time looking for short-term stop-gap solutions when they knew it would ultimately need to be dismantled by a scorched earth approach. They didn’t. Instead they wrung their hands in indecision and didn’t really get themselves going until two weeks before the regular season started. It was their first black-eye as the new regime and it pissed a bunch of us fans off.

Now, having said that, I agree that Haley has something unique in mind and I think that he and Pioli see perfectly eye-to-eye on how to build it. The good news is that we’re now over the hump in terms of going through the changes that were all a part of those last minute changes last year. I think the organization with its fully rounded-out brain-trust feel they’re in a different place that we fans do. We’re looking in from the outside and they threw us for a loop with this draft. I get that.

They went for immediate impact type of players because they must feel that their foundation pieces are in place. To me this draft shows a huge amount of optimism by the Chiefs organization. Well… If they’re right, then the team should be better than many of us fans think they are and we should all be happily surprised by season’s end. Nothing would be better for Chief’s Nation. So I guess that means that Pioli, Haley, Weiss and Crennel have a lot to prove.

By the way, rec’d for the post. Nice work.

Asamoah looks to anchor the line for the next decade, post Brian Waters.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Wow great young man with good parent's, and brought up right.

Jon Asamoah is my second favorite pick in this years draft, he’ll make a great addition to our o-line.

I think by this draft

Pioli has let it be known what we he plans on doing. He plans on winning and getting us to the Superbowl NOW. Not build our team and in a year or 2 have the SB window then close. He’s building us for winning NOW, immediately, and for a long time. He’s not building, he’s adding to a team that is about to be a winner.

Exactly.

Pioli was drafting for Now not Later. And i can really see that now and I am excited and pumped. Can’t wait to see the faces of the Chargers when they come to Arrowhead and we hit em like a mac truck coming out of the gates strong.

GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT post Kray.

This is exactly how I feel. As rabid fans we all THOUGHT we knew what this team needed. We were wrong. Pioli & Co just infused our team with playmakers. We just became one, if not the most, dangerous teams in our division.

So many different ways for us to make plays. I’m ready.

2/3 of the Earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by Eric Berry.
I guess now we KNOW how Pioli feels about safeties that high... hahahaha

wow … them some serious homer glasses you got going

Well said Kray

I wasn’t thrilled by several picks and kept thinking we NEED Golden Tate, a NT, and LB’s right NOW! And when we didn’t get those I was kinda disappointed. Way to shed some new positive light and give a different perspective. Well done sir, well done.

Everyone who is talking about estastic they are about this draft.

just remember saying this when/if our defense can’t stop the run again this year.

“couldn’t be happier”

omg …. our problem areas last year:

Offensive tackle – did nothing to address
Safety – address acceptably
ILB – nothing done
Nose tackle – nothing done (FA addition of shaun smith)

so Romeo Crennel and Shaun Smith is all that was need to correct one of the worst front 7’s in the league?

i wonder if Arenas can play nose tackle? _

by Home skillet on Apr 24, 2010 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

Nothing done at NT?

you know when Shaun Smith played for Crennel he put numbers that are equal to anything that Vince Wilfork has ever put up, so I wouldnt say that we have done nothing to upgrade the NT

by badassz1987 on Apr 24, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Home skillet. We're not done man!! Last year we were snagging players all thru the season.

We’re not done. We just ran out of picks. But you can’t pass up that kind of talent in a draft and just let it go to get a russel okung. We needed this kind of speed, intelligence and talent on the offensive side of the ball. And Berry is a huge improvement.

by krayfish on Apr 24, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Atleast it's positive

I agree with a lot of the post but not every player we draft can play every position. Berry playing RB and Arena’s playing wildcat. Why not have dorsey play FB and Dj play RB. Yes McCluster will play RB and in the slot but don’t kid yourself if we are going to put our #5 Safety anywhere but safety or DB. We did get a little faster in 3 positions but we still have the slowest LB’s in the NFL and unless the line improves we have a front seven that has trouble stopping the run and is slow. Ok teams won’t be able to break 50 yard runs but they will get 4 – 8 yards everytime.

OK what we have improved – We have a solid O-line and we can address the Tackle position next year if needed. We have an versital offense now. We have one of the best young secondries in the league. We do have a very good coaching staff. But Romeo and Wies did not do to good when on teams without a lot of talent. So we will see how they do with this team.

“So do you bite on the reverse and go for McCluster or do you hesitate to see if he is going to pitch it to Charles? Not with his speed and talent either. Or what if Berry is back there in a similar line up? He can pass. He can run. He runs like an elite RB. He has a really good arm too. He could be used in fake double reverses and pass it down field to Chambers.”

I didn’t write it and didn’t skim…… I guess it could be a typo but I don’t see another Berry on our roster?

good catch and good call…but i think Kray is really pointing out the versatility of KC’s picks. i doubt KC will ever put the highest paid safety in the league in a situation where he gets crushed by a DT or DE.

I have to say guy's, that at first i was fightin' mad, when we picked McCluster with our second pick.

But after i did more research on the players we picked , and watch some video on them, it made me realize just how good we did do. Thanks to Kray for the great post, it helped me calm down some and be happy with the players we did get, even though they weren’t the SEXY picks we all wanted, or most of us that is. A lot of people forget that we still can address those other positions of need thru the FA market or undrafted players, one of whom is Micah Johnson.

by CPT.Caveman on Apr 24, 2010 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

Now add Tony Moeaki

Kray’s post was just terrific. Now, adding TE Moeaki adds yet ANOTHER piece, for truly extraordinary offensive possibilities, if the O-line holds up as well as I think it will. Cassell should thrive in just this type of offense; he may need a second more in the pocket than some quarterbacks, but he has the skills to be an excellent quarterback (perhaps not elite). Moeki gets downfield much better than most TEs and is a sure-handed receiver. And a tough guy, too. He may be the real surprise in this fascinating draft; potentially an outstanding TE. His multiple injuries caused him to drop in draft, but they apparently all were minor, unrelated to each other, and hopefully not indicative of injury proneness. Hey, Pioli does have some idea what the real score is with players at Iowa….

AWESOME POST! +1000

Krayfish: You rock!. I’ve been saying the EXACT same thing. I have to admit I didn’t understand the picks at first either, but after they passed up on NT a few times, I finally got it thru my thick head they were staying the the one they picked up in FA. No, he isn’t a long term solution. They’ll snag another one in a year or two, but he HELPS FOR NOW.

As we all know, we have too many needs to fix in even two drafts, let alone one. One graphic they posted briefly during the draft is that our previous picks weren’t that great…21 aren’t even still playing in the NFL. Sorry, I caught it on the screen late, and didn’t see what the timespan was, but we all know it wasn’t too long. Hell, of the 34-35 or so players we got rid of last year, isn’t it like only 4-5 or 6 still in the NFL? The rest are bagging groceries.

Another thing I caught when the NFL announcers were discussing the Jon Asamoah (G) pick…HE PRACTICED A LOT AT CENTER. Look for him to show up at RG and C; maybe even as Wiegman’s eventual replacement. The thing I liked the most about him, they said he was NASTY. We need someone like that up front to bounce a few on their asses.

I also agree with field position on change of possession being so so critical. Put Dexter McCluster on one side and Javier Arenas on the other side for kickoffs—- now who you going to kick it away from?

The NFL is changing, and both Pioli and Haley have talked about it, and you touched on it also krayfish. Big time on the pass and trick formations such as the wildcat. If we don’t change we’re toast before we even get started. I’d sure hate to be the opposing DC when we line up with our new line and have JC and Thomas in the back field, McCluster in the slot, Moeaki as the blocking?? TE, let alone Chambers and Bowe as wideouts…who you gonna double? Whoever the single coverage guy is will take it to the house, or at a min, get a chunk.

But that’s only if we want too, because with the RB’s we’ve amassed and the blockers to launch them, we’re gonna pound the ball boys and girls. I’m on the bandwagon that Cassell isn’t the second coming of Montana, but he doesn’t need to be in this arrangement. He only needs to be competent and intelligent. He is both. Give him that ONE EXTRA second to analyze the play before he pulls the trigger and his picks will drop and his critical down completions will come up. We all watched the games last year. The guy was running for his life the 1st half of the season. Put the TE Moeaki and McCluster over the middle, or handoff to McCluster and have him toss it to Moeaki over the middle…yardage is coming in chunks just like a few years ago. Too many looks, and too many options out of each one. Also, McCluster and Moeaki can both stay home and pick up the blitz, provided the opposition can get by our new O line.

I agree about Chan Galey too. Galey is a master at making lemonade, if you catch my drift, and I think he will really shock the Bill’s fans this year (in a good way.) BUT, if you’re trying to changeover to something new, you gotta install it and see who can adapt to the new arrangements. I don’t think Chan was onboard with that. You take any pro team and install a new offense two weeks before the regular season and see how many do exactly what we did—-fire drill city. 45 sacks last year, yeah that sucked. BUT, there were only 15 the last 8 games. Extrapolate that to 16 games (30 sacks), and we’re back in the top 10. The O was catching on.

As you alluded to, with the offensive minds of Haley and Weis back together, I can’t wait for some of the new twists they’re gonna turn loose…starting with Monday Night Football!! Clark Hunt is making this game a special event, and while normally I would think the gameplan would be not to unleash all the hounds early in the season, I’m guessing this is a game they’re gonna target as “We’re HEEERREE!”

And the thing I like the most, they’re gonna play the best 53. Period. I loved what Haley said when telling players who they were competing against “You’re not just competing with these guys, you’re competing with the entire NFL, cause if we can get a better guy in here, we’re gonna do it.”

Anyway, its nice to finally read something that (in my mind at least) agrees with what I see happening. I have to scratch my head with those who’re up in arms immediately because the pick didn’t match their board. Yes, we all have a passion for this game, that’s why we’re here. Please take a half-second and remember Pioli and company are long on experience, have the pedigree, and are highly accredited in what they do for a living. THey have scouts. We are not and do not. (NOTE: That’s not taking anything away from some of the AWESOME research and posts that I’ve seen here!!) Pioli, Inc. is just getting started. Yes, they’re putting fingers in the dike in some instances, what would you have them do? They are shoring up some positions (O line for instance), and will come back and address them top to bottom later. Our D was like swiss cheese last year, can’t keep putting our weak O in a hole all the time.

As I stated somewhere else not too long ago. This staff has over 20 (21-22?) Superbowl rings in the jewelery box. Unmatched anywhere else in the NFL (afaik). They took over a franchise totally in the tank and heading downward at a high rate of speed.

Don’t they deserve at least a bit of time to prove they f’ed the pooch before we publically crucify them here? We’re not trying to sell papers like JW for crissakes! The one thing I look to from the 09 season as an improvement over years past…they never gave up. They were flying around like madmen trying to make a play. Over 80 plays on D in the Philly game, and yes they finally ran out of steam, but for a team to stay in it that long, hey, my hat is off to the players as well as the staff for instilling that pride. One thing Haley made good on, He took 22 guys off the street and won 4 games…

And finally, while I usually like JC Peason’s commentary on things, I have to take issue with him on his negativity on this years draft. Yes, we just about to a man picked leaders and team captains as our picks. JC correctly stated that rookies are told “You’re a rookie, we don’t care if you were a team captain in college, this is the NFL, shut the F up.” and “team captains are nice, but they don’t hold weight if they’re not playing.” I agree, but how many team captains are benchwarmers and NOT players? Team captains are routinely the best players on the team. My words to JC are “JC I like ya man, but if you’re such a good talent evaluator, why aren’t you coaching or scouting somewhere?” Whole lot more $$ there vs. calling games from the pressbox.

Yes, I’m in the koolaid, and it comes in several flavors thank you. I prefer the 5% 55 calorie version myself :)

That's the point now. With these players, we have just lowered the skill set needed to thrive as a QB here in KC now.

And we’re not done. There will be more offensive linemen coming out. Trust me. And defensive guys will be available over the next coming months. We’ll get the rest of the holes filled. I promise. It’ll happen. Have some patience everyone that is frustrated. Like rwalke says, this type of versatility makes everyone’s job easier. Look what just charles did for us last year.

My god, we have 3 of him now. People that are upset about the draft because we didn’t get certain players this draft are forgetting something; we ran out of picks. That’s all that happened man. Nothing more. Just because Pioli has a different plan in mind on the order he chooses to bring in certain players or positions doesn’ t mean he’s failed us.

Do you naysayers have amnesia? Last year we brought in about 4 billion different players all season long. Why would you think that this year would suddenly be so different? Until they fix this team, they will continue to bring in competition on all positions of need. Pioli promised this already several times. WE"RE NOT DONE!! Can’t you wait until closer to preseason to crucify our leaders for getting us seriously talented versatile players?

I don't know where I've been, but just noticed this post and finally have it all read.

Rec’d Kray…awesome stuff. I agree 100%. We made some major steps forward. Not having to spend picks on linemen except Jon “Asamaousohoasjah” has made room for fast, smart, football players who are all difference makers in their own right…by the way…did you see the video of our new OG? The guy engages a DL and then holds him back with one hand while taking on another guy with his other hand. This guy is a beast to be sure.

And 1 starter so far out of both of them,2 knowing Berry is going to start.Thats pathetic. So far all the best plyers on this team are Herm’s players. He only got 1 more draft than these guy’s have had,and he got fired.Look at the FA signings so far:Mike Brown;sucks,Vrable to old and slow,Cassel(Steve Bono),Ndukwae sucks,O’callahan good.Draft picks Succup is the only legitimate starter,a kicker are you kidding.Every single goood player on this team is an Edwards pick or FA signing PERIOD

Ok, here come da facts...

Facts straight. Got it. Ok here we go…Sorry, can’t agree. You count both drafts, but only one season has transpired. Since season #2 is almost 5 months away, the facts are noone knows who the starters will be at this early date?! What you say is now incorrect. Besides, if you count TJack and Succup that’s 2 in the 1st year, no? Also, didn’t Cotham start before his neck injury. That would make it 3…Sorry, incorrect again.

Not to mention since CP was the GM when Herm was here, I have a hard time believing Herm had trigger power on the pick when dealing with the ego of Peterson.

If you really want to talk facts, how about the fact his teams got progressively WORSE every year Herm was the coach. Not only here, but in NY…and if Herm is such a good coach, why is his only gig as a part time commentator and why isn’t he back coaching ANYTHING right now? Those are indisputable facts, sorry.

I’ll readily give Herm a B+ on talent evaluation, but he gets an F on HC in my book. Too soft. How many hundreds of pounds did the Chiefs lose during OTA’s and camp? I think it set some sort of record…Fact is Herm left his teams in total freefall. With the Chiefs, the only saving grace was Galey’s abilty to make lemonade kept us from a goosegg win year in his last season…

I don’t have anything against you or Herm, just wanting to re-clarify some of your facts……I won’t even mention the fact that he had 13 picks his last year. That’s almost 2 years worth of picks since the new regime has been here. Oh, BTW, why can’t you count FA signings in the starter total? FA’s only mean you can’t get everything you need from the draft (or can find it cheaper/more experienced in FA.) It still pertains to the ability to find talent…

Please name the picks of Herm’s ‘every good player on the current roster is an Edwards pick’ since those names seem to escape me at the moment. Thanks.

I think you mean cottam and he was a herm pick. So much for straight facts.Everyone forgets Herm inherited the oldest team in football, lost his startingQB,LT,FB,back up FB and Pro bowl guard Will shields the next season the team had a pitiful defense to boot.Evryone was on the keep the offense, fix the D and win multiple Super Bowl’s bandwagon. That was a fine idea in CANDYLAND! In the real world with the leagues oldest offense and no defense NOT HARDLY.He should’ve told the stupidest fans in the NFL and CP to jump of a bridge cleaned house and everything would be much better now.

I can't believe you think we are a worse team now.

By the time this season is over with you’ll be eating lots of crow. I believe Herm did get the shaft, but he still can’t coach. Herm is one of the best secondary talent evaluater in the league but that’s it.

by CPT.Caveman on Apr 26, 2010 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Cotham (Krayopedia) - Cotham is a common misspelling of the name Cottam.

It is frequently used by commenters in a to throw off everyone from the real point. That they are hopelessly in love with a coach who destroyed two separate teams in his career. Who is unhireable by any sport as a coach on any level.

Using Cotham as a witty retort is usually a sign of that one is in the throws of delirium, according to the Daily Krayologist, a popular magazine among Kraytons. I

n this altered state they forget that even with all the draft picks he had to work with, including several first rounders, he failed. Dorsey was the 43 version of Suh in his draft. He had the best of the best of the best to work with. He had Hali, Dorsey and Allen. Enough said. If you can’t take that skill set all by itself and be a dominant 43 defense in this league, you suck.

The final effect of using Cotham in a reply as a desperate attempt to deflect the painful truth, is complete denial.

These “Hermathizers” are not able to accept the reality that while in NY, he took that team to a worse record every year he was there. They did get worse. It’s in the record books. You can even find such proof on the internet, according to Dr. Kraynit.

Amazingly, upon his arrival in KC, with help from 26 other teams that had to lose in order for the Chiefs to have any chance of reaching the playoffs, he managed to back into the dvisional Wildcard game.

After that, he continued in the same Hermection (a word used to describe the direction Herm Edwards takes a team once he becomes their HC), eventually setting records for historically bad play

“He could pick em’ but he couldn’t coach em’”, one Kray was overheard saying after their abysmal 2-14 season.

In conclusion, Hermathizers are not be taken literally. Be supportive and show them they are special too. Remember, they didn’t ask for this disease.

Kray; I've been around since the regime change...mostly just a lurker. Finally jumped in here and a couple other places.

I’ve been a fan long enough I remember as a kid watching them build Arrowhead the 1st time, if that gives you any indication. At about year 12 of CP’s 5 year plan to the SB (lasted 20 long, agonizing years), I stepped away for the sake of my sanity. That hurt beyond belief, but I couldn’t stand what Peterson was doing to Chiefs fans and the Hunt family. Lamar was such a class act, and CP had so much smoke up his ass.

If getting a SuperBowl trophy in the case at Arrowhead (or any other NFL stadium) was as simple as compiling the best available players, EVERYONE COULD DO IT. Washington is proof positive that’s not the way its done. Snyder has thrown 100’s of Millions at his team in the short time he’s owned it, and they still pick ahead of us. That’s pretty telling in my book.

Anytime you have 11 people moving at the same time in a precision play and 11 more reacting to what the first 11 are doing, its all about team interaction, and minor adjustments made on the fly. Yeah, I know, its back to ‘THE RIGHT 53’. That’s become a dog-eared term to be sure, but it’s still as important as it ever was.

There very well may be another way to skin the Lombardi trophy, but I’ve yet to see it. All the winners have revolved around intense teamwork, so when your opponent throws something new at you, you already know how you will react, and even more importantly, being 100% certain where your teammates will be…and we’re back to “TR53”

Regarding Herm, I give the guy kudos as a talent evaluator, but that’s where it stops. Well, actually I’ll add one more to his plate. He had the cahonies to goto Clark on his own and convince him the onsie-twosie yearly FA approach CP had made such a good living at was smoke and mirrors. Where Herm failed was he wanted to be the player’s friend, and not their motivator.

When Peterson got the order from Clark to go young, he stuck the hot rod up Herm by getting rid of EVERYONE, there weren’t enough vets still around to show the youngun’s how to prepare…the rookies were winging it, and missing badly.

His last draft was 13 players. 13 players. Give Pioli and Co. that many picks in this talent rich draft, and we WOULD BE fixed. Now.

Anyway, your posts pretty much line up with what I see happening, just had to comment. Thanks for the comments, mucho appreciado!
