2010 NFL Draft: The Kansas City Chiefs Draft CB Javier Arenas

With the 50th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs have selected Alabama corner back and punt returner Javier Arenas.

Mocking the Draft has the skinny on Arenas:

5'9, 198 pounds | Cornerback | Alabama

Agility:
Shows excellent agility to move around laterally with ease. Is a very quick player on his feet and sticks with shifty receivers. Cut into and out of his breaks without losing a beat.

Ball Skills: Moderately underrated in this area because of his low interception numbers. But Arenas shows in his return abilities that he has good hands. Muffing a kick was a rarity and Arenas showed good ball placement on returns.

Body Control: Displays great mid-air agility. Has a good vertical leap. Shows good balance in his backpedal. Possesses a consistent backpedal.

Instincts: Arenas displayed great recognition skills throughout his career. Reads plays quickly and adjusts especially well. Gets an excellent break on the ball. Will bite on fakes from time to time.

Read the full report here.

That's another Chiefs' draft pick that wasn't on our draft interests list. Arenas will join Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Travis Daniels, Donald Washington, Jackie Bates and Mike Richardson at the corner position for the Chiefs.

Another pick I didn't see coming, let alone the position that was selected. The Chiefs must have had a high grade on Arenas and/or think he has great kick return potential. This is the second pick by the Chiefs this draft that involved a hybrid-type player.

Arenas highlights are after the jump.

Yeah. They were torched.

I like the attention paid to DL the last couple years and the current attention being paid to the DBs.

Feel no urgency on NT, because I don’t think there was real 1st-round value beyond Suh and McCoy, and neither one was an ideal fit for KC’s needs (although if either one had fallen, my eyes would’ve turned green with avarice).

Mccluster will be our slot receiver

he will be like Percy Harvin was for the Vikings. Effectively kills any thought of Shipley

Arenas is our return man. If you can lock down an all world return guy for 5 or 6 years you do it. That is a HUGE Need.

Chiefs have lots of by-the-numbers DBs and have been picking them that way for years.

This year, we’re seeing real PLAYERS comin’ in.

Arenas might have issues with the bigger WRs, but I like seeing a smart, QUICK corner being added to the mix. And as I’ve said elsewhere, and far too often, I like “inverted” coverages, with smaller ‘n’ quicker behind bigger and stronger.

But with better coverage backs behind, in general, whether the regular safety or just a corner layin’ back a bit, your DB blitz threats are stronger. Getting better in the d-backfield means KC can blitz more often from more different angles.

by hmills110 on Apr 23, 2010 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Well said..

He will do exactly that, return kicks and/or punts, and blitz on the nickel.Leggit was terrible last year, just couldn’t make a play, even when it was right there.Arenas will be an immediate upgrade.

mccluster is gonna play WR

by CHEEFN58 on Apr 23, 2010 6:44 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't think so. At least not on an every-down basis.

More like, he’ll be sharing minutes with Jamaal, returning kicks, and occasionally lining up in the slot. I just see him “showing” RB and then pre-snap switch to the slot. That should give Cassel a real pre-snap read advantage, same as Priest gave Trent. Jamaal’s going to bring that threat, and it’s something they’re likely to be more serious about this season.

Chiefs are now 2-deep at lightning, and they achieved it relatively inexpensively. Much as I hate spending 1st- and 2nd-round picks on RB, this pick makes more sense than (m)any of Carl’s 1st-round picks at the same position.

by hmills110 on Apr 23, 2010 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm guessing you don't watch much college football, especially SEC

McCluster’s been more of a WR than RB in his college career. As for not having holes at DB, I disagree: KC needed a safety, and took Berry to fill that need. KC also has just a so-so nickel and so-so depth at corner, so a pistol like Arenas gets the call.

I don’t like the McCluster pick, but he’s not really a running back.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

by burntorangehorn on Apr 23, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

mcluster was really an unknown quantity until that tennessee game

he only got a couple touches against us a few weeks before and hardly had any impact at all. but then houston nutt decided to turn him loose on the vols and BOOM!

he’s really a versatile and might need an unorthodox approach to fully capitalize on his skills, but if you do he’ll deliver the greatness.

I think you're being a bit simplistic, here.

What 2 positions do we not have holes? RB and DB

One problem with thunder ‘n’ lightning is when you lose one guy and are all thunder or all lightning. While I’m all about adding OL, DL, DB, WR all day long and pickin’ thru the scraps virtually everywhere else, the fact is there wasn’t a 2-deep threaten-the-edge guy. Somebody who creates the same sort of matchup problems that Jamaal Charles does, in case Jamaal goes down.

Haven’t seen these double-threat kinds of players since Priest Holmes was in his prime. And it sounds like McCluster was a good value in the 2nd.

by TXChiefan on Apr 23, 2010 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

The DB upgrades alone allow the LBs to play more downhill style.

That alone will help. Being able to throw extra hats at the line every down without losing out down the field or backing off down the field (which amounts to losing out, imo), the Chiefs are instantly more stout against the run.

One of the best run defenses I’ve ever seen was KC’s nickel D in the early 90’s. They weren’t afraid to bring anybody or everybody, and this made them very difficult to block. It was so much a matter of worrying about whether the Chiefs could STOP anybody as it was a matter of nobody could BLOCK the onrushing horde of KC defenders.

I like what I’m seeing.

by hmills110 on Apr 23, 2010 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Im still holding out for Stud

Andy showed a lot of promise and with an offseason, he can learn a lot from Mike Vrabel. Maybe Crennel knows something we don’t in Shaun Smith. He was very productive under Crennel.

by dudebuddyrage on Apr 23, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Getting better in the secondary is going to be HUGE for this defense.

Also, once you get past Williams and Cody, there’s about as much talent at NTto be had much later in the draft as there is earlier. Lots of upside guys, but no real can’t-miss prospects, either.

Whatever your complaints about PON, KC’s made some pretty damn sure picks for the longer term.

he saw that arenas intercepted tebow and said…“OP! WERE DRAFTING HIM”"

UT defensive end Robert Ayers sits alone in his locker, clad in full uniform, reading passages aloud from his white-covered Bible. Ellix Wilson's voice fades and silence holds for a few minutes.

Then Vols sophomore Eric Berry stands."When I say Killas, y'all say Killas and then when I say Trained Assassins, y'all say Trained Assassins and then when I say, Want Some, y'all say, Gone Get Some."

Then Berry starts, "Killas!"

"Killas!" the team replies in unison.

"Trained assassins!" Berry chants.

"Want some," Berry leads.

"Gone get some!"

"Let's go bang a motherfucker, man!" Berry screams in conclusion.

The boost to the secondary also gives many more blitz configurations.

They can send a guy off the edge all day long and God help the QB who throws to the area vacated by the blitzer, because there’ll be ANOTHER great coverage player lurking in that area, ready to break on the ball.

I think the views of many on pressuring the passer is a little too direct, although I myself would love to have seen a rush LB being added to the roster. With the upgraded secondary, Chiefs can blitz more often and in more different ways, and they can have some real SPEED rusher in the mix.

Not me.

What I don’t like is that we seem to be picking all the same positions that were “addressed” in the mid-late rounds of last years draft. Lawrence /Washington vs Arenas and McCluster.

Pioli seems to be pretty much giving up on those picks he made last year who were supposed to be the “future of this team” So now he is flushing the best draft in 20 years down the toilet.

IN PIOLI WE TRUST, fine

I completely agree. Dude’s done a lot more work and research and seen a lot more stuff than I have. I have to say, though, that I am very surprised KC hasn’t made any trades. I realize the mantra is “Not all trades are good trades,” but I find it hard to believe that these 3 players are exactly who we keyed in on before their respective rounds.

This is the second year in a row where we have wasted every pick except for the 1st round.

Other than Berry, our team has NOT improved this week.

Actually, last year wasn't terrible

Succop and Lawrence were nice picks, for example.

And the other key difference is that KC DID waste the 1st-round pick last year.

If lawrence were a good pick, why did we draft McCluster and why wasn't he starting?

2009 draft was shit. I will never believe otherwise.

Magee= shit
Washington=Shit
Lawrence=Shit

3 horrible mid round picks = one shitty ass draft.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Apr 23, 2010 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Hard to say about Magee. He's had only one season, with limited minutes.

I think he’ll be a good, disruptive player down the road, who may eventually become the LEADER of the front 7. You could see he was not quite used to the speed of the game and was playing a little out of control, as a result, but when the game slows down for him (and it will), I think his football IQ will begin to assert itself, especially with the DL mindset of Crennel and Pioli. These guys know what they’re about when it comes to DL. Far too soon to think otherwise, with regard to ’09 picks.

Washington was behind on the learning curve, chosen for upside. But I will admit that I was disappointed with his limited minutes, and what happened during those minutes.

Both Lawrence and Washington are ATHLETES, who may or may not respond to training, but whose upside is tremendous. Others were saying the same thing about Mo’ Leggs a year or two ago. But I have to think he’s on the bubble, along with Daniels, Bates, Richardson.

Obviously Berry's a better pick there

But Cody’s a much better player than this draft position indicates.

It was out of faith in the KC scouts. If Pioli thinks Cody's a safe pick, I can roll with it.

But I had plenty of issues with the Mt. But I’m also a big fan of the big men, and I’m OK with a #5 picked on a wide body, if he’s GOOD. And I’d have faith that Cody would be GOOD if KC had thrown that #5 at him. But I didn’t bat an eye when Eric Berry was selected at #5. In fact, I liked it!

i support what youre saying

we needed a slot receiver we got it, we needed a safety we got it…so far the only position we didnt need and took was CB with javier arenas. we still got 4 more picks in a very deep deep draft. we can address offensive line with this next pick if we have to…bruce campbell, jared veldheer and charles brown are still there. well be fine. just keep your hopes up.

I think it's more the lack of size and arm strength

He’s a good QB who could succeed in certain offensive schemes, but he’s not a guy who can take it downfield with authority. I love Colt, but the second round is right for him. Third wouldn’t surprise me, and neither would the first have surprised me. But this is about right. I do hope he gets to New Orleans, because his skill set is like a mobile Drew Brees.

I’m not happy with either of these picks. I know I prefer to go BPA, but this team has too many holes to blow both of these picks on situational players. Both of these guys are going to result in very few plays on Sundays, and we only need one stud returner.

McCluster's a good return man

Arenas shouldn’t be a consideration there. He’s an awesome cornerback, and he’d have been in contention for the first round if he had been 5’11" or taller.

Arenas' biggest value is as a return man, and ....

the fact is he’s only 5’9". That’s like saying Rolando McClain would’ve been a great NT prospect if he was just heavier. In this day and age, a 5’9" CB is going to be stuck at the NB position. That’s a situational player, and it isn’t worth a 2nd round pick for a 4-12 team. I don’t like the pick, and it’s worse following the McCluster pick. These are luxury picks that would be great if we were 10-6 last year with just a few spots to upgrade in this draft.

by etp_stl on Apr 23, 2010 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

No, that's not his biggest value

Return men are a dime a dozen. There’s almost no value to a return man, because if he’s any good, teams just kick away from him or adjust coverage. That’s why Dante Hall, Devin Hester, etc. dropped off the map once teams made the correct adjustments.

Arenas is an awesome CB. I question whether you’ve watched much Alabama football recently.

These aren't luxury picks. You can upgrade the LB position group in the 5th, with continued coaching of existing LBs,

and even with UDFAs. The guys who play 1-on-1 in space need to be higher-tier players/athletes. Makes sense that they’re the position groups KC’s hitting.

a slot receiver/rb and a punt return/kickoff guy are luxury picks

if Weis and Crennel think they have the right guys to win, and based upon this draft board they do. Then you go looking for special team and niche players which is what these guys are. Just wish they could have found guys a little taller.

Our picks were surprising, but not bad..

If you look at the 2009 Chiefs,we didnt really have any playmakers til Charles got going in week 8 or something, and Flowers was injured some of the year.
We NEED Playmakers, field position is crucial and last year noone could even hold on to the ball, let alone get to midfield. We now have 2 threats in that area with Javier and Dexter.
These ARE needs!!And Romeo Crennel will most certainly scheme our defense better than Pendergast, come on!
Dex will be a great slot receiver,i.e Wes Welker,i think i can live with that. And there will be free agents still, they can fill the NT/LB positions. What other holes do we have now?
