Every Cornerback Tandem: Where do the Chiefs rank?

There are a lot of things that makes a good cornerback in this league.  You have to have good zone and man coverage.  You have to have a knack for the ball.  You have to have good jumping ability.  You have to have decent speed.  To be an elite cornerback I think that you need to have all those skills but bring them to a higher level.  I also think the team around you can help you become better.  This starts with the other cornerback on the other side.  I ran stats on every cornerback tandum in the league in 2009.  I picked total tackles, interceptions, passes defended, and fumble recoveries/forced fumbles.  These aren't everything but are very important stats.  I just added all the stats together from both cornerbacks.  What do these stats say?

Is it better to have a higher amount of tackles as cornerbacks?  Well, some might say no because the ball shouldn't get that far in the first place.  Some might say yes because that shows a corner can stop the run too.  No matter how you look at things stats don't lie.  We all know what Brandon Flowers does and what he is capable of.  A lot of us have issues with Carr.  Yeah, he needs work on some minor things but overall he is a solid cornerback in this league especially after looking at all the other number 2 cornerbacks.  It is rare to have two solid cornerbacks in this league.  Most teams only has one good cornerback and the other is just ok or not so good.

So when I look at total tackles Flowers and Carr are ranked 10th out 32 with 127 total tackles.  Ranked number 1 are the Titans CB's with 144 total tackles.  What does that tell us?  There isn't that much difference from 10 to 1 in this league.  We have solid tacklers in this league.

Next I look at interceptions which Flowers and Carr are ranked 12th (tied with 5 teams) out of 32 with 6 interceptions. Ranked number 1 are the Eagles tandem with 14 interceptions.  What does that tell us?  We have to work more on the interceptions.  Flowers did well but Carr needs work on finding the ball.  We will do better in this area next year especially with safety help.

Next I look at passes defended which Flowers and Carr are ranked 2nd out 32 teams with 42 passes defended.  Ranked number 1 are the Bengals tandem with 44 passes defended.  What does this tell us?  We have one of the best tandems at defending the pass in the league.  Most teams beat us in the middle and deep where our safeties and linebackers were out of place.

Lastly, I look at forced fumbles/fumble recoveries.  I think this is an important stat because this shows that the CB's look for the ball and can cause fumbles.  Flowers and Carr are ranked 1st out of 32 teams with 7 FF/FR.  The only team that came close was the Bears tandem with 6.  This goes to show that our Corners are doing their best to make plays.

So in conclusion, we have a great CB Tandem and although Carr needs a bit more work he is still very solid in this league.  We need safety help and our secondary will be very dangerous.  I'm excited to see how much our new coaching staff will make our defense that much better.  Go Chiefs!
