Thomas Jones Calls Chiefs' Matt Cassel 'Hardest Working Quarterback'

Thomas Jones made his first public statements as a Kansas City Chiefs running back this morning and I caught most of it courtesy of the live coverage provided by KCChiefs.com.

Jones had some nice things to his new quarterback Matt Cassel.

"I played against him with the Jets," he said of Cassel. "I saw him first hand. He's got great skills and he seems like a leader. The type of quarterback you want to have. That's definitely something I was looking forward to."

Good news on the Chiefs quarterback, no?

Well, here's another one. Jones, who has only been in the building for a couple of weeks, says Cassel is the hardest working quarterback he's ever been around.

Now, Jones has played for the Cardinals (pre-Warner), Bears, Bucs and Jets so it's not exactly MVP-row when it comes to quarterbacks but that's still a heck of a compliment.

He said Cassel wants to be a great player, which "means a lot to me."

You gotta give these Chiefs credit. They know how to say the right things.

We'll have some more soon from Jones talking about his carries in 2010 and Jamaal Charles.

I'm pulling for Matt Cassel...big time.

If he improves as much as I think he will…our offense is going to be ridiculous this season.

same here

I hope he can get alot better with Weis. Hopefully he will be standing up long enough to get rid of the ball, and hopefully some reciever out there will catch it. I hate to say it but Cassel’s fate doesnt even fully rest in his hands. If the Oline fails and our recievers continue to drop passes its going to suck for Cassel.

Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

Well Said...

totally concur with the situation Cassel is in, and it sucks. That said, the same goes for every QB in the NFL. If their line don’t block and their receivers can’t catch, it makes them look bad.

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

I feel that Matt has all the mental tools needed to be a QB in this league and for our team...

He just needs the physical tools around him to succeed… Hopefully we can land Tate and Matt will have found his new BFF… If not, hopefully Lance Long learns to catch better and he could be a pretty solid slot guy.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

“The type of quarterback you want to have (in the huddle)”, I believe he said. Or maybe I just heard wrong…

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

Pennington

is underrated as a passer, 65.6% completion percentage for his career? Are you kidding me?

Yes I know its because he doesn’t go deep…. ever… but those are still impressing numbers.

I dont think Chiefs fans have ever questioned Cassel's work ethic

We have always known he is the type to study tape and opposing defenses more than the average QB. The guy was a serious woker and got his shot in NE because of that hard work (and pollard’s hard work).

Fans have only questioned his on-field performance (as a Chief). Hopefully, he eases those worries this year with a, hopefully, improved offense around him and a full pre-season to get used to his team and coach. I for one am a Cassel fan, but Im waiting to buy a Cassel jersey.

by Boots 58 on Apr 12, 2010 10:42 AM CDT reply actions

Yup

It’s nice to hear your QB has a great work ethic and his dedication hopefully is infectious among the locker room. But if his hard work doesn’t translate to success on the football field then it doesn’t mean shit. I’d take a lazy ass who only shows up on Sunday’s over the hardest worker in the league that can’t get it done come crunch time.

but really, how often does that happen?

pretty much never. Jamarcus Russell is the shining example of what happens when you have a lazy QB.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Apr 12, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

There are a lot better QB's in the league

who apparently work less than Cassel. It’s like Gunther Cunningham for instance. I don’t give a damn how hard you work or how many hours you put in – just do your job and do it well!

by KansasCityShuffle on Apr 12, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I am the type to believe that the hard work eventually pays off.

I was hard on Cassel at times last season but, I also realize that his play was only partially his fault. Some help up front and the guys catching all the balls they should catch and Cassel can be a very good QB. I think Weis will make all the difference in the world as far as cassels development is concerned.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Apr 12, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

Weis is going to help Cassel along the way, and also this in turn will help Haley. Instead of being entirely focused on Cassel, now Weis focus on Cassel and Haley will be able to observe the offense as a whole unit. That much critiqueing will go a long way for this group.

Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.

by jrcnc on Apr 12, 2010 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the kind of response Cassel has been working for.

He’s busting ass to make this team better, and his team mates are noticing. It’s one of the keys to having a leader based team. I’m so glad that Cassel is stepping up and leading by example. The money I spent on that #7 jersey last year is something I can be happy about.

2010 is going to be interesting. Go Chiefs!

by Red N Gold Beast on Apr 12, 2010 10:48 AM CDT reply actions

Conversely...

It’ll be real interesting to see how the Jets perform this season missing probably the biggest leader in that locker room, at least for the offense. And now they’ve added Santonio Holmes to compete for catches with Braylon Edwards…

That offense may just fall apart from the lack of leadership, and the dynamic those two bring in contract years.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

by ArrowSpread on Apr 12, 2010 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

We saw first hand how pathetic a team can become when proper leadership is lacking.

From Herm (sorry Ups) all they way down to our 3rd stringers we didn’t have much in 2006-2008. I guess Gonzalez and Waters would have been our leaders, but there’s only so much they could do in directing that offense. It’s good to see the QB stepping up and putting in the extra time needed to show everyone else how it’s done.

And actually, now that I think about it...

LJ probably cancelled out whatever locker room chemistry Waters and Tony could create.

I think Cassel will be a lot more respected as a leader this year...

Last year was something new and I’m sure that everyone is fitting into their roles on the team and accepting other’s as well easier.

I've been thinking...

that I might actually be scared to face the jets. They added some nice things this offseason the defense still intact, the running game with shonn greene and washington still there. Holmes Edwards. It looks like they have all the pieces. I think they will be a serious contender this upcoming season. But you know, you can still have your “every given sunday”.

Very Impressive.

I haven’t had this much hope and haven’t seen this light at the end of the dark tunnel in a long time…and it’s about time. I’m just trying to calm my hopes down so I don’t expect us to go to playoffs and win the superbowl. Although I wouldn’t mind pulling a Jets and making it to AFC Champ game except one step further this time.

NY knew they lost something special

that is why they took out a full page article to thank Jones. We got a good player to come here willingly, so I bet he is going to play his heart out and make K.C. proud.

Our offense would look a lot better

if he would learn to throw the ball away and avoid being sacked. A lot of you guys put this on the OL, but they can only protect him for so long. He had the same problem in New England and Brady had no problems with that OL. I tend to think opposite of most of you…I think it is hard to evaluate the OL with Cassel at QB, while most of you feel that it is hard to evaluate Cassel with our OL. Tough to know who is right, but the fact that he had the same problems in NE lead me to believe it is more on Cassel. If he improves this, our offense will be significantly better this year.

by matts22 on Apr 12, 2010 10:56 AM CDT reply actions

We're both right.

The OL needs to get better and Cassel needs to get better.

I don’t think anyone is really putting the blame on one unit. That whole offense was pathetic enough for plenty of blame to go around.

It’ll be interesting to see how far hard work and gritty determination gets Cassel this year. Anyone that works as hard to better himself as he has is bound to turn in some decent returns.

2.7 Yds per carry

Didn’t help fend off any pass rushers either. If you can’t run, you pin your ears back and rush the QB. I really think the emergence of Charles, the addition of Jones, Lilja and Weiss as well as a year of “system continuity” is going to do wonders for this O, Matt will not hold on to the ball as long, RBs will find the holes and Play-action will be effective.

The Chiefs will take a defensive player with 3 out of their first 4 picks in 2010

by fairmont on Apr 12, 2010 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes

It appears that one year into the Pioli/Haley rein, the Chiefs are remaking the fiber of the team. Now the time approaches when solid, game changing improvement needs to be visible on the field. Many of us have watched and recognized small, isolated improvements and been encouraged by it. Now the time is at hand when we need to see a bit of domination. Dorsey and Tjack will be much better this year, barring injury and if we can get a mauler to help out in the middle, we should be able to be in alot of games when the clock reads 4 minutes to go in the fourth. Cassel had best shine up the tap shoes because opening night is only a few months away.

by Aiken_Drum on Apr 12, 2010 10:59 AM CDT reply actions

I love Matt Cassel, I really do.

I can’t help but root for a guy that gives it his all….Some wonder why we didnt make a move for santonio…its all baggage…its the same reason you wont see us nab dez bryant(sorry dez fans)

I hope he has a 23/11 Trent Green type season to calm the cassel hate, and then we have a QB under a pretty fair contract.

cassel can only get better...

Another yr under the system
Weis’s guidance
Better o-line
Chambers there and Bowe there for an entire season
Maybe a Golden Tate to help out
2 very very good rb’s
better def= shorter field on offense
softer schedule
