Breaking down the TJ deal
It seems like everyone approves of the Thomas Jones to KC deal. Scout Inc.'s Matt Williamson gives his take on the Chiefs' latest move.
"I love it. He is not an elite player, but he still has something left. He really will help young running back Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs don’t have a great line and they aren’t going to win the Super Bowl this year, so it doesn’t make sense to give Charles the ball 25 times. Now, he can be given the ball 15 times and extend his career. This move will also help Charles watch Jones and learn how to become a pro. Jones is a good blocker who understands the passing game. He will help Matt Cassel. This is a great move."
I tend to agree with Mr. Williamson, this was a great move for KC!

I agree
I like the player, I like the price, I like the contract length. This is a good deal from pretty much every perspective.
talk about a change in mentors
from larry johnson to thomas jones. I know he’s 31 and our line is not close to the line he ran behind for the jets, but I just use that to temper my excitement about this move. just one less piece to address in the draft.
very true
MAYBE this means there will be MORE OL focus in the draft/trades/FA…
the skill players are looking better and better, at least on offense
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
nah the major needs are still there
SS, NT, LB before O-line
Seriously mates, when have I ever been sarcastic?
Oh and in case you were wondering, that hug offer is still there when you are ready UC :p
The major needs will indeed still be there
but prior to this signing (and maybe still, but less likely) we would have taken a Big RB around the middle of the draft, like with our 4th rd pick. I would rather us take an interior lineman, NT, WR, or DB in that spot.

The Chiefs could have a pretty good line
Draft Russell Okung and pick up a free-agent or late-round center and our OL is…
LT: R. Okung
LG: B. Albert
C: TBD
RG: B. Waters
RT: R. O’Callaghan
That’s not a terribly crappy lineup.
not bad
but…
Albert, Waters, Rookie, Ndukwe, O’Callaghan looks just as good to me…
AND, you could have Berry, McClain or Williams back there on defense as well!

I don't think Albert is destined to be an LT
and Ndukwe didn’t impress me at all. If we draft an LT we’re really improving two positions on the line because Albert can move to his natural position.
i thinks you underestimate BA
if BA’s natural position was guard, then he would never have been able to adjust to his new weight and blocking scheme the way he did. sure the beginning of the year was ruff, but it’s not surprising when you think of the drastic game changes he had to make. but with all that he still locked down that LT spot in the latter half of the season. especially in Dec.

I don't think Okung will be there when we draft either
If it’s not Berry, I think’s it’s possible Pioli reaches for Dan Wiliams. I don’t know if he’ll want McClain that high as an ILB but NT seems to be more suited for a reach. Plus Pioli loves drafting D-linemen high.

3 things
1. Albert is a legit LT.
2. Ndukwe is on the roster is no bigger risk than a draft pick and does not cost one.
3. Either Berry or McClain will be there at #5 and either one will have a huge impact on this team.
Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.
1. I don’t disagree that Albert can play LT, I just don’t think he’ll ever be great at it. LT is maybe the 2nd most import position after QB, we shouldn’t be accepting mediocrity.
2. Ndukwe is not a risk, but he’s not an improvement, either.
3. I agree that one of those will be available (probably McClain), and while I wouldn’t mind having either of those players on the Chiefs, I think that Okung would have a bigger impact (since the Chiefs are obviously going to be a running-focused team next year).
You can't pay 1st round money to LT's 2 out of 3 years.
Albert isn’t the problem. There are others that can be upgraded in later rounds potentially.
Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.
not sure we did pay LT money for Albert
He was drafted #15 right? I don’t think we broke the bank to pay him. Iuputi will get drafted in similar position this year and make more.

So Cassell will be more of the game management QB?
I really can’t see Haley settling for that.
I think he will force Cassel into that game-changer QB mold or look elsewhere
for it. Cassel will determine wheter we are hunting QB in 2011 or not.

The money paid isn't the issue
most QB’s are soon to be in the Cassel price-range.
Brady and Payton are up for new contracts next year I think.
Wonder what those contract numbers will be?

I really see Weis being the one molding Cassel
into a greater QB. We’re going to be a balanced offense using runs and play-action passing. Hopefully Matt can work on his accuracy and rapport with his receivers this offseason. Not to mention a much improved deep ball.

Butt at some point the QB has to rise to the occasion
A conference championship or a Super Bowl the QB has to WIN those games. Ask Kray :)

I still blame alot of MC's luke warm production on the WR's.
Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.
That's why we need to find a play maker. Is that Brandon Marshall? TO?
Someone defenses have to prepare for and fear.

Yes and on Cassel too, and of course the O-line and the scheme and the coaching changes too
IMO that a lot of that will remain be settled in the 2010 season and Pioli/Haley/Weis will evaluate Cassel with not a lot of changes game to game. A Science experiment needs most of the variables to stay the same to get a decent result.
Matt “Lab Rat” Cassel is about to get his Maze to prove himself in :)

You think cvigz? How do you think Albert will never be great????
My goodness people! You have absolutely no idea.
Answer: we don’t know how good Albert will be… he’s what? 25? C’mon…at any one time there are different guys at different levels of development. Some are hugely successful right out of College, some take 4-5 years to develop into something great…some take 7-8 years to get their opportunity and maximize it. Some simply stink their whole career and never excel at all.
But you really have no idea who will be great and who won’t.

I think we need to focus on the interior part of the line now
at least give Albert one more year. I think he’s fine at tackle and one more year under the system should show all the doubters that he’s a perfectly capable left tackle. Need to draft at least a C, probably another G as well. I want Berry at 5. He has the ability to be the next great safety.

Like I said
I agree that Albert is “fine” at LT. If the Chiefs keep him at LT, I won’t have a problem with it. I’m just saying that there are better options available. We have an opportunity to upgrade at one of the most important positions in the game, and it would be foolish to pass it by.
Yes but,
then we wasted a first round pick on a guard two years ago which for me, negates the positives of moving him inside.
Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.
At least we didn't spend the pick on
Darrius Heyward-Bey or Vernon Gholston or some shit. Albert could be a SOLID interior lineman for decades. That’s hardly a wasted pick.
Albert was picked after Gholston and he wasnt even in the same draft as DHB.
Starting NFL LG’s can be found after round 2, Albert was pick 15 in round 1 and players such as Joe Flacco Sam Baker Jeff Otah were availible with that pick. Who i would much have preferred to pick than a LG. So in the sense, yes it is a wasted pick.
With all that said, I like Albert at LT and think we should draft a C in round 2 and look for a guard in round 3 or 4.
Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.
Having to move the 15th overall to OG
Could be alot worse. I think you guys should pick a OT too. Its one of the few positions thats hard to miss. No irony intended.
I agree it could be worse
but Albert came along nicely towards the end of the year. Hell, he shut down Dumervill in the last game of the season. I cant understand why anybody would want to move him. The only LT that MIGHT be better than Albert in this draft is Okung and i dont think he will be there at 5.
Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.
maybe not but you still don't draft a OT
Seriously mates, when have I ever been sarcastic?

I think this combo looks better
Albert, Waters, WOOKIE, Ndukwe, O’Callaghan

I think they will be going Berry if he is on the board.
Though I like your lineup and approve, I think they can get Zane Beadles OG, Utah for LG, Move Waters to center, and Kyle Calloway, OT Iowa in the 4th for RG. Everyone says Calloway is excellent at pulling and Guard could be calling in the NFL

Solid pickup
He should pick up at least one blitz a game, that would have otherwise possibly resulted in Cassel’s admittance to the hospital.
Good catching the ball too. Nice move by the Chiefs.
Everyone except

Yeah but when your closest colleague is Pete Prisco
…you look like a genius.
Is it me, or does this move
look an awful lot like a Patriots move? Finding some value in free agency for a guy with a few extra miles to backup/spell a younger, growing starter?
