Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

I’m Hyped Too, But Let’s Calm Down

I like both the signings of Chris Chambers and now Thomas Jones and I do not mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but bear in mind that both of these are "stopgap" guys.  We are looking at maybe two years on each guy (I know, Chambers signed for 3, but it would not surprise me if he retired after two.)

We are picking high in the draft (yet again) and, if things go anywhere near according-to-plan, we will not be picking this high in the draft for a long time to come (preferably never again during the Pioli tenure).

So, bear in mind that when the time comes to replace Chambers and Jones, we will not have this kind of leverage in the draft.  Personally, I think we still need to draft a WR (third round, maybe?) and utilize the fact that he can learn from Chris Chambers for a couple of years.

And let’s not make the monumental mistake (IMO) of thinking, again, that we are fine with the O-Line that we have.

My wish list, if the value were there, would go as follows:

First three rounds (we have two second-round picks):
1.  O-Line - either right side, or replace Brandon Albert and move him to the right side.
2a.  NT
2b.  Trade for a veteran C with 5+ years in front of him.
3.  WR

If that happened, I wouldn’t even care where the remaining draft picks went.  What I would hate to see is stopgap on Offense and draft Defense.  We got to have balance.  (FOR ONCE!)

Let's not even talk about what happens if Chambers and/or Jones get injuried.

we're excited

because jones brings leadership to the team. he can also help out jc become an even better back. and we’ll probably get a WR in the draft and chambers can help him out

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

yeh there stop gap players

but were not gonna be able to overhaul the team in two years…..thats what we need is time…..more draft accumulate more players

Line- yeh we need to improve the line…..but i dont think its as far off as you think…..it didnt suit LJ style of running……but JC obviously didnt have a problem behind it…..I think albert needs to stay on the left side, o’calaghan did fine at RT…..best case scenario we sign lilja and move waters to C…….and draft a RG

NT- we deffinatly need to upgrade…..hopefully cody

by cassel4prez on Mar 9, 2010 8:39 PM CST reply actions

I agree with most of that.

Albert should stay put, Waters should stay put. O’Caladhan should stay put. Draft Pouncey at C and move Rudy to RG. If we got Lilya we could use one of the others as depth along with late rounders or cuts casualties. Draft mostly defense and skill players. Thats my take and I’m sticking to it.

by skunk420 on Mar 10, 2010 6:36 AM CST up reply actions

Did we resign Niswanger?

or did we just give him a tender?…either way if he is back next year, my understanding is that, though he’s not the greatest center he is a pretty good RG (please correct me if I’m wrong). Jones might only have a couple years left (I still think he’ll produce a heck of a lot better than LJ did these past few seasons), but Chambers is pretty much exactly the same age as Jones (born in the same year and the same month), which means he’s more than likely to stick around a lot longer. Eddie Kennison (most should remember that name) was drafted in ‘96 and is currently still playing (though he is a FA now). He didn’t play last year but played in 08 with the Rams. Then there’s the other extreme Jerry Rice – drafted in 85 retired in 06. That’s a little over 20 years. Now I’m not saying that Chambers is as good as Jerry Rice, but he’s def better than Eddie Kennison (who is 4 years older and still trying to play) and with that in mind I think Chambers has a lot more left than most will give him credit for.

what if cassel got hurt

we can play the what if game all day…..but we would be in the same boat as charles was last year after LJ left……and the same boat we were in when chambers had to fill in forbowe when he got suspended

by cassel4prez on Mar 9, 2010 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

You compare Jones to LJ

If all Jones can provide is 2.7 yds per carry, we have gained nothing right now.

In Bowe’s case, yes I agree, between a four-game suspension (25% of regular season) + demotion in pre-season + Cassel’s injury (pre-season and the first regular sweason game) taking time away from them playing together, things should be better there.

Predictions:

1) Fans will feel just scads better from mid-to-end of the 2010 season.
2) During the 2021 season, Ryan Succop will become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1469 points.

NO NO NO

im not comparing jones to LJ……Im saying if jones got hurt we would be in the same boat as when LJ left…….and Charles would have to take all the carries

by cassel4prez on Mar 9, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Please Explain.

Why does everyone say move Albert to Right side? He has never played, to my knowledge, on the right side. So why now? It sounds stupid and moronic. The only movement of Albert should be to LG if anything then Waters to C and w/e LT or trade waters for picks, move albert to LG and draft C/G even though it sounds stupid. my point is why move albert to right? no sense there.

Well, basically

the idea that RT is an easier postion overall than LT. I have always been under the impression that LT was the most difficult position on the O-Line. If he can play LT at a mediocre level, maybe he can play RT at a better level. Getting a better LT would then result in two positional upgrades on the O-Line.

If I’m wrong there, let me know.

by Dove40 on Mar 9, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

Yea.

When I play I hated having to swing to the other side. I was more comfortable playing the other position on the other side. It threw me off. I guess it could depend on the player.

I don’t see him playing RT anyhow, because O’Callaghan is holding down the fort.

I was for LT Bulaga so we could upgrade LT move Albert to LG and Waters to C, or trade Waters for additional pick(s) and draft C.

LG – Waters

I'll tell you why I'M excited

Too many people around here bash Cassel, mocking his $60 mil price tag, raggin on his long ball, he’s a shitty quarterback, yada, yada, yada…

But those same people know what Cassel is capable of doing when he gets some weapons around him. Right now we’re slowly, but more important - methodically — putting pieces around him to not only take some pressure off of him (which a lot of you so generously throw his way) but also help him to improve as a quarterback.

Thomas Jones is one that is going to keep him focussed, level-headed (we saw how excited he was when he got his firs rushing first down — damn near threw his arm out), and confident in his ability while he is under center. And Chambers actually provides some consistency at the receiver position where there previously was none.

And Cassel gets a full offseason with both. Screw you, buddy. I’m excited.

every team has stopgap players

You don’t have a team full of 28 year olds in their prime.

I also don’t understand moving Albert to the right side. Move him to lg if anything.

Trading our 2b for a center i’m not a fan of. We can draft a guy and have him watch waters play center, if need be, until he can take over.

We need continuity on the line.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 9, 2010 9:21 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I am fine with constant stopgaps

at WR (if there are two youngsters learning) and a constant stopgap at RB (if there is one youngster that he is there to compliment).

Not liking 2b for a C is nitpicking (and I did state that there needed to be 5+ conceivable years in front of him).

You titled the comment “every team has stopgap players” then said we should draft a C to watch/replace Waters (whom you are moving without explanation).

Please explain.

well i couldnt write everything so i'll just say

That I agree on a nt at 2a. That’s about it, respectfully

I don’t think we need ol with the 5th pick and IF we did it won’t be for anything but a left tackle and Albert would move to lg. That would bump waters to center. We start shuffling guys around and IMO Albert will be the left tackle anyways so it doesn’t matter.

Your post made it sound like we should not get excited because these are stopgap players. That does not make sense to me. Sorry.

I'll say this

If Tommie Jones and Chambers, & maybe Sean Smith is as far as Pioli goes in the Free agent market – i’m comfortable with saying he’s being TOO PRAGMATIC in his approach of building the team through the draft. Or maybe he’s gunshy on giving big contracts to players without his man Billichek’s seal of approval.

There are some offensive lineman there that could help us out in a big way, and part of me wants to trust that Pioli passes on the players that we don’t need. But in the same thread, the NFL is a lot bigger than his patriot clique, come on man.
