Broncos Sign Former Chargers NT Jamal Williams
And the fun in the AFC West continues.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with NT Jamal Williams. The contract runs three years.
This is a big move for the Broncos and a slight shift of power in the AFC West. Williams, 34, has anchored the San Diego Chargers defensive line since 1998 when he was drafted by the team.
He's certainly up there in age but up until last season he'd been able to stay on the field consistently.
The Broncos, like the Chiefs, switched the 3-4 defense last season and used Ronald Fields at nose tackle.
Even if Williams is in on limited snaps, this could be a very good move for the Broncos. The Chiefs could've used the nose tackle help but I suspect they might be addressing that position soon.
And with that, one more nose tackle is off the market.

well, I wish he was out of the afc west.
Scott Pioli will find a way to make NT the biggest offseason priority.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
That Broncos D is relying on quite a few older players
Both Dawkins and Williams are getting up there age wise
What the world needs is more geniuses with humility, there are so few of us left.
I'd still trade any of our safties for Dawkins
And players like Vrabel, Edwards, and McGraw aren’t exactly full of youth either. But I do see your point.
Crap, I kind of wanted this guy
He seemed to pretty much destroy the Chiefs—well that may have been due to the lackluster O-line…
yeah he would always make our center look 5 times worse

damn
I’d like to grab some fa nt so we have some options in the draft
1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

cleveland kiss of death
They said that they intend to keep him. You know what that usually means.
meh
he is up there in age…
but, this means denver may not leapfrog us to draft a NT this year
Patience is truly a virtue, good things will happen soon
I think they signed another one too
maybe this means they won’t be drafting one in the first round
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
I'll reserve judgement for now
Until I see the contract…but I wanted him. I won’t deny it.
Any ideas?
My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.
WRITE IT DOWN!
Thank you JacinB.

You're pimping your fanshot hard...
And I can’t hate.
One less road block for us to grab Williams or Cody at 2a.

Cody would be a HUGE addition to this line and it's lookin' like maybe Shaun Smith could rotate with him.

Emphasis on the HUGE
his knees won’t last long. We keep saying D linemen take 3 years to develop, and this guy might not make it to that point.

Hate to say this but Denver's lines lookin pretty good all the sudden
They added DE Jack Bannan and Jarvis Green and now the NT in Jamaal Williams. It’s going to be tough for Charles and Jones now
Maybe now they can hold Charles under 200 yards rushing.

Josh McDaniels is creating his very own “Over the Hill Gang” on Denver’s defensive line.
Williams is the third defensive lineman signed since Friday that is over 30, joining Justin Bannan and Jarvis Green. Bannan and Williams will split time at nose tackle, which should improve Denver’s lackluster rush defense.

Really need to upgrade that Center spot now
Pouncey maybe or attack the Guard spot with some great talent. Iupati or Johnson.
Maybe a RT prospect that can play the RG spot.

I dont' think it changes anything
these guys are all old… not sure that Denver’s Defense will be THAT much better
but, YES… a Center upgrade is a MUST.
and, a RT/RG prospect would be fine with me… or a LT/RT for depth

I can see NT type DT's falling down the board with all of these NT signings.
And some pretty good options being there for us without having to reach with a first round pick.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
I don't think SD woud have cut him
if they thought he was going to completely recover from last season’s injury…I’d say Denver is guilty of some wishful thinking.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
You may be right
I’m hoping they were just planning to resign him at a paycut and he’s healthy with a chip now.
From Merriman’s twitter:
Jamall Williams just signed with Denver…Dammit
Gotta love that, at least!
"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

Hey guys
Between Charles and your pickup of Thomas Jones, I’d say this was a guy we had to have in Denver. Always hated this guy for the same reasons you did but am now sure glad he’s on our team. Sure hope he’s healthy, but if not at least he won’t be that massive force for SD any longer, and we do have a little better competition on the DL now in addition to him. The way things were looking late last year, we really needed this if we didn’t want you guys to put up 200/game on us. Time will tell if it was the right move, I suppose. The potential of your running game is still making me very very nervous right now.
By the way, how are the Chiefs doing on the O-line? Are they going to be able to pass protect a little more consistently this year? Sure would be nice to slug it out with you guys this year and leave SD in the dustbin.

thanks for the comment!
OL is a huge source of debate here in KC…
I, personally, think it’s coming along nicely, and a couple of additions (C, G) will allow them to continue to improve.
we’re all hoping for Lilja, the LG from the Colts to come back to KC… then draft a Center.
some want a new LT… some don’t… I would grab an OT, but only for depth and competition.
and, YES, it would be nice to leave SD in the “dustbin” this year and every year!

Come back to KC? Wow, didn’t realize he was hometown guy. I did think of you guys when I heard he was released, but didn’t know there was a connection. That’s like us getting Justin Bannan from Baltimore, formerly U of C – Boulder.

Yep.
Not only was he born in Kansas City, went to high school in Kansas City, played football at K-State, but his first gig in the NFL was as an undrafted free agent and practice squadder with the Chiefs.
We cut him and the Colts picked him up and … well, he’s got more Superbowl Rings than anyone else on our line now.
Ask Clady how well we pass protect.
Albert is a fine LT. He, like the rest of our line, went through some growing pains when the playbook was scrapped just before the regular season hit. Not to mention the change in the blocking scheme in general.
Our OLine picked it up quite a bit towards the end of the season. I see no reason why we can’t add one or two pieces and build from there.

I'm VERY impressed with Hali
and I’m sure Clady is, too.

That’s what I suspect, as well. Again, it’s hard to know until you’re actually notching Ws and Ls, but with the runners you guys have now, you should be able to set up the pass much more easily.

Mount Cody is the answer!
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
