Report: Chiefs Sign Thomas Jones To Two Year Contract

After over a day of visiting, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with free agent RB Thomas Jones, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jones, 31, was released by the New York Jets on Friday.

Over a week ago, we thought it made sense to bring Jones in to complement Jamaal Charles.

Schefter also reports the Chiefs were planning on bringing in Pittsburgh Steelers free agent RB Willie Parker. The Chiefs had a visit scheduled with former Oakland Raiders RB Justin Fargas this evening. No word yet on whether that'll happen.

Per Schefter, Jones is coming in on a two year contract. He'll make $3 million the first year and $2 million the second. There is also $500,000 in incentives.

Welcome to Kansas City, Mr. Jones.

Exciting Stats - TJ Will Be Great "Thunder" to Jamaal Charles "Lightning"

Look at T. Jones career numbers. Doubt he’ll ever tote the rock 330 times in a season again like 2009, but the production is undeniable.

Also, remember how dynamic Jones and Leon Washington were in NY in 2008 before LW was injured?

If we sign Ryan Lijia and draft Maurkice Pouncey with 2A, our offense will be ready to roll with Weis and Haley at the wheel!

Also, to put Thomas Jones’s career into context, with 200 yards rushing in 2010, he’ll pass Earl Campbell for 28th position on the All-Time rushing list.

I like Crash and Burn.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

Mawae or Pouncey at Center

We need to sign Kevin Mawae or draft Maurkice Pouncey to play center to open the holes for Thomas Jones between the tackles. Remember his best years were achieved running behind Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold in NY.

by bbear200 on Mar 9, 2010 5:46 PM CST up reply actions

This is rally perfect

Jones will not be the show guy, but does all the little things well/ He catches well, he blocks well, and he leads a team well.

For the money, you could not buy a better FA.

And, we don;t have to go there early in the draft now.

by bas on Mar 9, 2010 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

Actually...

I like the idea of signing Mawae… and drafting Pouncey to play Guard. Then our Offensive line would be set for this year.

Go Chiefs!!!!

Madden currently rates Charles has having a "B" in potential

so he probably won’t jump all the way up from the mid 80s to the high 90s that quick. I’d like to think they might bump up his potential though.

I don't do to bad on Madden 2010

But it take’s 3 or 4 years to do anything with our secondary. Awareness level’s are way to low, it’s crazy.

Wasn't Jones rated in the low 90s?

Hell, now that he plays for the Chiefs they’ll probably bump him down to 78 or something

As pessimistic as I try to stay....

I love this move. I dont know if this makes us need O-line help more or less, but Okung or Berry will be at #5 (if they’re not, it means that some number of the big DLs/QBs will be there and KC can trade out) and either pick would bring a huge amount of improvement to the team. I wish we had Boldin, but if Pioli signs Ryan Lilja ill be okay with this free agent period.

Two Running Backs with Acronyms?

TJ and JC. Maybe we can print up some shirts with them both on it and have a huge line across the top, AcroBacks…

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

I’ve been bashing Pioli for some of the moves he has made – and not made – over the past year

I have to say this Jones signing is a real coup

To get the number 5 free agent to come to a losing team for a humble amount of cash for a short contract is darn impressive

Jones / Charles combo looks great

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

It really is a pretty cheap contract even with incentives.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

Jones signing bigger than Preist or Marcus?

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

Just comparing

But if TJ’s next 2 years are like his last 2 years, it could be close

I really liked Allen and Holmes though, so I’ll have to wait and see

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

no way

priest and marcus were arguably the best acquisitions in the history of free agency, not many guys impacted there teams more than them 2

Believe me, I'm a big fan of the Marcus and Preist signings

But making the comparison – Jones could be that good if all goes well

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

im glad this signing finally happened

checkin AP every 1-2 hours was really cutting in to my productivity. i’d say this will prob be the only FA chief’s signing that will get any hype around the league. bring on the depth players now.

Short yardage

Jones would not do as well behind our current OL as he did behind the Jets line, but it will be upgraded soon. One thing is certain. We finally have a short yardage guy. No more Haley failures at 4th and 1. I have a feeling Jones will get 10-15 carries per game. He never fumbles, has great vision, and is a good receiver, as well. Great move by Pioli. I think we may take Brian Bulaga and move Albert to G. The running game will be great, and Cassel will have fewer sacks and more time to throw. We will be able to hold a lead and control the ball late in the game.

To everyone who thinks we are in trouble at receiver, both Charles and Jones will be targets.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

True, except TJ ...

hits the line hard whether he has blockers or not

To go one step further ..

Okung or Beluga in round one

Mike Iupati in round 2

Sign Mawae and Lilja in FA

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

So true

This guy is truly one of the great iron men of football. As a compliment back that splits carries with our young stud, this is about as good as you can ask for as a fan.

There is no reason we can't sign Lilja.

Lilja’s roots are in Kansas, and I would think we would be the first place he would want to play. Unless he wants more money than he is worth, I see know reason why the Chiefs can’t sign him. He’s only 28, and alot of Colt fans and players are upset he was cut. He is the best O-lineman left on the market, and we sure as hell need to add a couple of bodies to our line. I totally agree with how Pioli is managing free agency, after admittingly being disappointed when I saw no signings the first few days, and now that he has signed Jones and resigned Chambers, if he nabs Lilja, I would call it a pretty successful free agency, if he doesn’t sign anybody else. Shaun Springs, the NT from the Bengles, has some personality and work ethic issues he will have to overcome for us to sign him, but he does have a relationship with Crennell, and has displayed alot of talent, at times, when he has his head on straight. I think they will evaluate the risk vs. rewards, and if they don’t think he “gets it”, I have no problem if they don’t sign him. I also think we still have a shot at getting Wade Smith back, as he has already left two cities with no contract, and is likely just checking the market out. We still don’t know how Colin Brown is going to progress, as he was injured for alot of last season, Haley still thinks Barry Richardson can play, especially with some real coaching, and Nkuywe stepped up last season, when we needed him. Our O-line is not as bad as many think, and can have a mixture of youth and experience. If we look at it like this: Albert-LT, Waters or Lilja LG, Waters or Wade Smith-Center, Waters, Lilja or Nkuywe-RG, O’Callahan, Nyuywe or Richardson-RT, and Niswanger or Brown at either guard position. Pick up a few rookies, in the draft, to gain some experience and depth, and I could live with that line. Remember, they played well the last 4 games, with only 6 sacks, (none in the Denver game) and Charles running wild.

Just wanted to use some zero’s. If we don’t sign Lilja right now, I’d be pissed. At least we haven’t heard any rumors about him yet. Maybe that’s good news. Get the Jones signing done, then get Lilja in by Thursday.

This is an awful move

dumping all of this money into a position we’re set at. Backup HB should not even be on the radar right now when out O line and LB corps are as laughable as they are.

In 2-back systems, does it really matter?

Thomas Jones is still going to see a great deal of carries.

I love Eric Berry. Great sign… I like Thomas Jones a lot. Still want to see us draft Dixon or Blount to help out for years to come, but great sign for sure. Go get a Oline guy and maybe a WO. THEN DRAFT BERRY.

Man crush on Eric Berry.
