Still Mad About Losing Out on Boldin?
Don't be....Or, if you are, hopefully this makes you feel a little bit better.
Ok, so we lost the bidding war on Anquan Boldin, but we did re-sign Chris Chambers, and after comparing some stats, not only did we save a ton of money, but we also saved our draft picks.
2009 was a very good year out of Boldin: 84 rec, 1024 yds, 4 TD
2009 does not look as spectacular for Chambers: 45 rec, 730 yds, 4 TD
The main difference is once Chambers came to KC, we all saw what he did: 36 rec 608 yds, 4 TD...in 9 games (4 of those without our "1" WR, Dwayne Bowe). So, he was THE guy while he was here and if you take his 9 games and project an entire season with his new BFF, Matt Cassel throwing to him, you get:
64 rec, 1072 yds, 7 TD
The above line is stretched over 16 games, and neither Boldin nor Chambers played 16 full games this year. They each played 15, but they still compare nicely when you look at their YPG, with Chambers' KC numbers being used.
Boldin: 68.3 YPG
Chambers: 67.6 YPG
Not much difference in production there...
Now, I know that it is difficult to say whether or not Chambers will duplicate his 9 game stretch over a full season next year, because he will be 32 in August, he was playing for a contract, etc...but what about Boldin? The same can argued against Boldin, he will be 30 in October, he has been auditioning for a new team for years now, and he no longer has #11 on the opposite side of the field.
I would be more comfortable with Chambers going forward than Boldin, especially when you consider just how much Baltimore gave up for him. There are far less questions regarding Chambers, he knows the offense, he has established a good rapport with our QB, and he will not have to handle the pressure of being dubbed "the missing piece", or the team's "savior". All of these things are huge questions with Boldin...
...oh, and lets not forget how other WRs leave one team a 1,000 yard threat, only to disappear into foorball oblivion. (Alvin Harper anyone?...or how about a local bust-Brett Perriman?)

is goin to comment on this Scalp, we are too busy talkin about Eric Berry…. lol jk nice post man. Im happy with Chambers, especially since we got him from a Div rival… will play hardest when we need it.
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
a la' Eddie Kennison?
Let’s hope Chambers steps up against SD, they are at the top for the moment…
I know I am cutting into Eric Berry man-love, and for that, I apologize. lol

LOL np bro, good post tho. I got 1 1/2 months to man crush that beast of a safety!
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
Pollard, only half of "us" was on the Berry thing ..
the REST of us were on the Chiefsfan1970 post … If YOU were Pioli, what would you do with the 5th pick?
it was WAY more fun g
Scalper, honestly I never wanted Boldin at all … so in that sense I am glad we didn’t get him … and that we resigned Chambers as well …
next?

Whitlock Rocks!
hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
To me its less to do with if Chambers is or isn't as good as Boldin
The simple answer is he isn’t. Boldin has been a top tier WR for a long time.
Truth is we probably tried and couldn’t land Anquan, but Chambers is a nice consolation prize, plus you are right, didn’t cost us any draft picks to resign.

voted yes
Chambers and Cassel are going to connect alot next year, they are going to dominate!
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
There should be a voting option for:
“It didn’t really bother me in the first place”.
My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:
"Shut the f--- up."- Matt Cassel
"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

Well uh, thanks, but that was wasted effort.
I already voted “no” just to muck up the results… but I didn’t say I didn’t want Boldin.
I just said it didn’t really bother me in the first place. Boldin has a value, and it was no more than a 3rd round pick. That’s what we offered, and ARZ declined. No big deal, it’s not worth breaking our draft plan to pieces just to get a 30+ year old WR.

I'd rather have both.
I never really thought we would get Boldin anyway…especially after I found out Baltimore was chasing him.

I dont know if its that
we were excited about boldins production as we were about the the name “Boldin”…….everyone has seen him be succesful for many years and has prolly had him in fantasy football……I think the bolding signing would have reassured us fans that if pioli wants a player hes gonna get him, and that he is heading in the right direction of getting this team turned around
I think this is Bowes breakout season.
He’s got the Todd up his wazoo, Chambers applying pressure for #1 spot, and fans saying he’s a 2 at best. I think he should be pissed off and come into camp to show these MFers whose the #1.
I always say that it is Bowes chance to breakout
and I am not gonna stop now. I predict 1,100 yrds and 9 TD’s. solid year for him.
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
Once again, I will draft him too high in Fantasy Football
because this is his “breakout year”…
8-8 could win win the west in 2010

Lol...
Did you say that last year? And the year before that?

Bowe was good the year before last.
He did bite it pretty hard last year tho. I just think that if he has any pride at all, this is the year to get it done.
yeh
bowe been solid for us other than last year
One thing to consider...
This isnt Chamber’s first year…his “upside” is over. He’s been all over, with only average or maybe slightly over average stats. He’s not like J. Charles (who still could disapoint…remember LJ after his big one year) who has a ton of “upside” still left. Chamber got cut, came here with a chip on his shoulder, and could possibly lay down with a new 3 year deal….I hope not, but it has me concerned.
LJ had 3 big years lol... but I know what you mean.
Charles is better spoken, smarter, more down to earth and humble tho with his ability. Yes he knows he is good, but for instance the last game he couldve asked Haley to let him back in to break the record, but he CHOSE to sit and give another back a chance to get some PT.
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
And I said the same thing SoR about him laying down
im nervous of that too and his history shows its possible…
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
I agree completely
Its always a concern in this modern NFL, players tend to lighten up all the time…lets hope that chip stays for a little while.

I agree
but it shows that kid has character AND ability. I couldnt be happier with how he handled himself this season, especially after the fumbles.
And I am very pleased with Todd Haley for seeing past that downside with JC and allowing him to pull through it or try to. This team has a lot of upside, staff included.

I was with you until the end there.
Comparing Anquan Boldin to Brett Perriman or Alvin Harper is a real stretch. The difference is that Anquan was doing it with less talent before Fitzgerald got there.
That said, I agree with you. I would rather have Chambers and the draft picks over Boldin because we aren’t just one player away. If we were in Baltimore’s shoes, then I would probably want Boldin.
This will WORK...IMO
Jones has been said to be a good locker room guy, and a weight room junkie. I would guess he still has atleast 2 yrs of gas left in the tank, which will make the money well spent…
