Thomas Jones Is Still In Kansas City

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli was on 610 Sports with Nick Wright this morning and Wright didn't waste anytime with the question we're all wondering:

What's going on with Thomas Jones?

Per Pioli, Jones is still in Kansas City visiting.

Previous reports indicated that he would be coming to town on Monday so, if that's the case, Jones has been there for more than a day.

And if that is indeed the case, I think that's a good sign for the Chiefs. Why else would he stay in town unless both sides were interested in getting a deal done?

The Chiefs are also reportedly hosting former Raiders RB Justin Fargas this evening.

Stay tuned....

DO NOT WANT.

Older than Just Fargas.
Has been thrown around from team to team.
Poor production in AZ. Left on a sour note.
DIdn’t even put up amazing numbers with such a run heavy team in NY.
EXPENSIVE.

Fargas seems like he’s a much better option to me.

by EyePod on Mar 9, 2010 9:43 AM CST reply actions

Do you really see him repeating those kind of numbers with our team?

Is he going to be the feature back? Is he worth feature back money?

by EyePod on Mar 9, 2010 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

my guess, 700-1000 yards

assuming we end up the season with a full O-line of road graders to pave the way…cuz JC will have 1600+ even if we kept the same line from last year. TJ will need better blocking than JC did IMO

No, because we don't want or need him to

JC is still the guy, but I do think he can continue to be a solid contributor, and being behind Charles on the depth chart should help keep him preserved too.

I’m still looking for your rationale for why Fargas would be preferred. As other have mentioned, he’s also over 30, put up less impressive stats last year, and has more of an injury history.

Thomas Jones was the man last year in New York, even though Greene came on strong in the playoffs. Fargas was not the man in Oakland, and it isn’t like Bush or McFadden were impressive enough to seize that job with an iron grip. I’m not saying Fargas would be a bad option, I just don’t understand why he’d be better than Jones.

by MtHammer on Mar 9, 2010 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

$$$

Jones got paid about 3 times as much as fargas. Why put that kind of money into the older (albeit more productive) RB?

by EyePod on Mar 9, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

hm

define “that kind of money”

and honestly what do you care how much we spend for him? as long as we don’t give him a super long deal i think we can probably afford it…

by The DBowe Show on Mar 9, 2010 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

I guess I'm just scared of signing old RB's ever since the LJ debacle.

I’m not expecting him to get huge money, but still. I don’t like investing in RB’s that don’t do anything special. I’d rather have that Denver running mentality (who we’re mirroring O-Line-wise). Every down, pounding the ball RB’s have become a dime a dozen. Now someone like JC is defintiely a different story.

by EyePod on Mar 9, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

Lol.. You don't even know

Fargas got a huge contract the year before mcfadden.. Like five or six a year.. They got rid of him bc they didn’t wan to pay two running backs that kind of money.

by BALLard49 on Mar 9, 2010 11:41 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

And I'm not saying that he isn't an improvement over everyone else that we have (minus JC of course)

Fargas is also an improvement over everyone else though, and again, cheaper. Plus, he’d be going from a worse organization to a better one. Jones would be the exact opposite.

by EyePod on Mar 9, 2010 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

He doesn't really have to get those numbers.

J.C is the starter, so all we really need is someone the opposing “D” has to worry about. A dependable back that can make you pay, if you don’t that him into consideration ( Wow 13 letter word, has to be a record for me).

Cassel is MUCH further along with his development than Sanchez right now. I also have to think that Cassel will continue to improve over the next couple years which will make him a continuously better QB than Sanchez …at least over the span of the next few years.

Cassel will be great with Charlie Weis.

Just Say No

to Thomas Jones.

I want to see Jamaal Charles given the opportunity to be a star. I want him to have a chance to shine. Let him get the rock 18-20+ times, and let him get a couple of receptions too. As a fan, I’ve longed for a player to rally around on this team. The face of the franchise that brings up the hope and spirit. The guy other teams chatter about and plan around. The guy who you have to go out and buy a jersey of. Charles has a chance to be that type of player. The tail end of last season was fun for one simple reason: watching Charles excel.

Bowe, Cassell, Dorsey, Jackson, Albert, Hali, DJ, Chambers, Flowers? None of them are that type of guy. And the last thing I want to see is a semi big name brought in to takeaway that opportunity from JC. I like Jones. But I don’t see him being comfortable with a 5-8 carry a game work load. And that’s what I’m looking for. Jones because of his resume will demand more touches than that. He’ll also steal receptions from Charles.

And let’s not forget that Jones benefited greatly from a tremendous offensive line in NY. Something that we can’t offer him. I’d expect him to struggle and revert more to his former self. And that was a guy who struggled to punch it in. He’s never been that goal line guy who can put 6 on the board. Which is what we need to better compliment JC.

Bring in Fargas, or some other role player, and let the fans have the opportunity of having a star player they can be proud of. A player who is ‘must watch’ on Sundays, and talked about all week. Don’t limit him to being a role that never gets to realize his full potential.

by Detroit Buckets on Mar 9, 2010 10:39 AM CST reply actions

Jones would be the role player, not Jamaal Charles.

When Marcus Allen came to the Chiefs he was not the feature back, but he was a great third down short yardage back. Same thing with Jones. He would be here to spell Jamaal Charles, not replace him. Haley said as much.

by G.L. on Mar 9, 2010 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

JC is going to be THE main focal point of this offense. A move like this will only make him more effective and prolong his career at KC. I truly believe that he could possibly lead the league in rushing next season.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 9, 2010 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

A Dependable Backup...

would be what he is most suited for on the team. We currently do not have anyone who can step in and pick it up for JC if he gets hurt. I love this idea and Pioli needs to make it happen. Besides that, he’s been in the league a lot longer and can offer advice and knowledge to our boy, JC…

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

by kcchiefsfan72 on Mar 9, 2010 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

I want Charles to be our super star player too,

but he’s not a very big back. If you don’t have a good guy to spell him he’ll easily hit 25 carries in a game. That’s 400 carries over a season and for a back his size would destroy his big play ability. If you can give a guy like Jones 10-12 carries and still be productive it allows JC to still be explosive and lengthens his carrear.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

by KCporkchop on Mar 9, 2010 10:56 AM CST up reply actions

The big plus here, to me, is that when

Jamaal does come off the field, there is not much (if any) drop in the running back’s ability.

by G.L. on Mar 9, 2010 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Why would Jones

after a 1400 yard season be looking for a role that only utilizes him 10-12 times a game? Jones isn’t thinking to himself that his days are over. He’s still looking to be a big factor on whatever team he goes to. And you don’t woo one of the bigger name FA’s by suggesting to him that his role will be that of a 10 carry back.. It’s logical that Haely/Pioli/Weis are promising him much more than that. I guarantee that it’ll be much more of a 50/50 thing w/ Jones and Charles. I’m not suggesting we run JC into the ground. He needs a viable backup. The last thing I want is for him to wear down prematurely. I just don’t ever see Jones accepting such a limited role. He’s still a player that will demand a bigger impact on the game. Maybe if we ran the ball 38 times a game like NY did, it would work. But the league average is closer to 26-27. More than likely they both get around 15 touches per game. That’s not a lot for a guy who’s always a big play threat and carries a 5.9 per average. Now maybe 15 touches per back equates to a good, balanced, team running offense. But it still limits a player who has the potential to be a stud. And again, Jones is not that goal line back, that guy to get that crucial 2 yards on 3rd down, that we really need.

Let’s be honest. With or without Jones, we’re not winning anything of consequence anytime soon. So I’d at least like to see us have a star playmaker on the field getting every opportunity to dazzle us.

by Detroit Buckets on Mar 9, 2010 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree about that.

Jones is 32. He knows at this point that he will be best suited as a role player. JC will still get 20 carries a game. Jones will likely get 10-15. I am under the assumption that we will be running the ball a LOT!

I also disagree with the fact that we won’t be winning anything next season. I believe that is a loser mentality and represents everything that has been wrong with the Chiefs for several years. We now have a top notch coaching staff and some very talented young players who are starting to come into their own. I’m not saying we will win the Superbowl or anything but, we could make some noise next year and win 8 games…maybe better. The Jets and Cards have shown the last couple years what can happen when an 8-8 or 9-7 team gets into the playoffs and gets hot at the right time…I will NEVER say something like, “we are going to suck so we might as well just give up on next season now”…For Christs sake, it’s only March.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 9, 2010 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

i agree 1970

there is already this defeated attitude around here. This draft is deep, we have several players already on the team, Dorsey, Flowers, T-Jax, Vrabel, Cassel, Bowe, Chambers, Succop, and JC. We have a core of young players that complimented throught the draft and Free Agency really could take this thing to the next level.
If you look at the AFC West it really isnt that dominant like it used to be. We could easily sweep the division or lose every game in the division, but saying we are already out of it is a reach. Only time will tell.

Not a loser mentality....

just a realistic one. I said win anything of consequence. 7-8 wins is very much in the realm of possibility for this squad next year. And while that’s a huge step up in the right direction, it’s still just mediocrity. It’s still going to be 2 or 3 years till we’re able to make some real noise in the playoffs. It’s all part of the process. That’s reality, not defeatism.

Bacjing up Jamal is better for him.

He will be able to walk without a limp when he retires.

The cost of livng in KC is nothing compared to NYC. I could live pretty good in KC fo 6 mi per year. Maybe even get some put back for retirement. Buy a bass boat. Now that’s livin.

Chester Taylor got 3 million a year, and he’s going to be a starter. Jones will be lucky to approach that.

House hunting?

This is an ideal pick to help JC just remember what happened to LJ and his being overloaded with carries.

I hope we land him.

we did, 2 years, 5 million, good backup RB money for a good backup RB. Good job by all.

This is a good sign

for the Chiefs!!! Charles is a stud, but, you have to consider the nature of the NFL. People get hurt. No, I don’t want to see JC go down, but if he does, who’d be better carrying the load: Thomas Jones & Justin Fargas, or Jackie Battle and some other no name? Like to see them both signed personally.

Thomas Jones and the Lombardi, DO IT!
