Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Sets Assist High In Easy Win Over Sacramento

Full Potential...

This post is basically to stir up a conversation on how do we continue to get the full potential out of our players...

Star-divide

Good evening A.P, I am hard at work and.... ok well im bored as sh*t and was thinking of course about our Chiefs, and just how good we ARE compared to how good we can be...

Last season had shown me a lot of different things throughout our 16 games played.  The first thing I think about when it comes to our team, is the amount of resilience and heart they have.  No that doesnt always win games but it does indeed give you a better chance.   I cant count how many times Jamaal Charles alone stepped his game up to make the score a little less embarassing, or at least the stats (Jacksonville).  Or how many times we went down on a late game scoring drive and saw Matt Cassel fired up like he just threw a "Ben Roethlisberger/Santonio Holmes" pass for the BIG WIN (Dallas, Oakland etc).  I mean that lil man was head buttin o-lineman cause he was so happy and amped, and maybe a lil crazy. I LOVE that.

However, that is not the only thing I noticed.  I noticed when this team wants to, it definitely can be put up against some of the best teams in the league, at their most desperate times and compete, if not dominate.   Yes we won 4 games, but those 4 games came at really trying times, not only for the team, but for the fans. The Kansas City Chiefs showed their true potential...

Yes the Washington game was a field goal fest, but regardless of how the team got the win, they got it, our first win of the season and I think our first game that proved Succop was our kicker.  I feel if we lost that game, that this team would be going nowhere fast and continue in a horrible slump, or downward spiral, but they didnt.  That is what I mean by resilience and heart.

The second Oakland game, I dont know about you guys, but that first game against Oakland AT home, left a horrible taste in my mouth, maybe because I lost 50$ and I was AT the game, but nonetheless a bad taste.  A chance to win at the end with 2:30 to go or so and the greatest QB of all, Jamarcus Russel (Sarcasm font needed lol) led his team on a scoring drive for the game, leaving us basically no time at all to come back. But we came back, we got them the second time, and we played our guts out to get that win. It may have been sloppy but we got our first division rival win, and I thought we showed plenty of heart.

I think we all remember the Pittsburgh and Donkeys game in the second half of the season, those two teams were viable playoff contenders playing against a "bottom rung" team but BOTH got dominated the entire game. Why? Cause we had our team all on the same page, we had a great game plan and we executed it to the fullest.

This is what I am asking... What is it goin to take to get those 4 games to be the "regular" for this team?  Denver to me, yes could be a fluke team with that 6-0 start, and ended up 8-8 or whatever, but 24-44? You got demolished with no answer to Jamaal at all, and I thought our defense played pretty decent that game as well.  But Pittsburgh there was no excuse, they were a playoff caliber team and straight up down the middle, side, back, and front got molested.  They didnt have an off game, we were just the better team.

So why cant that happen every single game we play? Why cant Jamaal always rush for 100+? Why cant our defense constantly hold a team to 6 points and just field goals?  Why cant Matt Cassel always come through when we need a game scoring drive? That is the mentality I think our players have, but the question is, what is it gonna honestly take to turn that mentality into a reality?  Hopefully after this draft and FA we will find out... I think this Kansas City Chiefs team and staff is ready to shock the world and answer just that.

Man

I’m pumped now! Come on 2010. I upgraded my season tickets and I’m ready for some football. I want to tackle someone.

I can't answer all your question's

But i believe our team give everyone a little glimpse of how they are coming together as a team in the Denver game, and buying in to Haley’s coaching style. With our new OC and DC this team even without so called big name players is improving, and will continue to grow.
The Denver game we had everything working on Offense so it made Cassel look better, it made our o-line look better, not to mention J.C was great in that game. IMO that was our first complete game as a team in a long time.

I agree, that was a very good game.

And to do it to a team that was still fighting, more like scraping, for a playoff spot… That was very fulfilling and a great way to start our new year… I just hope thye take from it what we did which is a way to win in all phases..

Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.

I think we showed that in several games. In reality we should have by all rights been destroyed

against some of our better opponents. If you went man for man on the rosters, we were way out talented by several teams that we almost beat, including Baltimore. But as I heard it once put “Haley has these guys overachieving”. That’s a major compliment in my opinion. And it agrees with your post. Good job Pollard. Your becoming better at posting all the time. Tks.

Yeah, But...

5-11 would have made me $100 richer!!! If only we could have held them pricks. I lost $100 because our damn team couldn’t win 5 measly games. Oh well, we’ll definitely be better this year. That is gay-roan-teed…

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

If only we could've been 5-11.

Oh wait we still would’ve been 5-11

Answer: More Talent, More Time

Q: How can Jamal rush 100+ every game?
A: Better offensive lineman, a better lead blocker, better blocking by our TEs and WRs

Q: Why can’t our defense hold a team to just 6 points?
A: Because we don’t have a NT, 2 capable ILBs, a strongside pass rusher, great safety tandem, or depth at corner.

Q: Why can’t Cassel always come through?
A: Probably because his teammates couldn’t come through. Maybe he can more often with greater time to throw, better options at TE and WR, and actually having a QB coach in Weiss.

This team has potential, but honestly its all locked up in youth right now. And frankly, at lot of it hasn’t even arrived to KC yet. Time and experience are really the only thing that is going to make Flowers go from good to elite. Or Dorsey and Bowe from serviceable to game changers. I’m thinking we have one more season of growing pains and then we could become year in and year out winners.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09 --> This will probably not happen, I was smoking crack at the time. Please Disregard.

Why can't Cassell come through?

How about KC leading the league in dropped passes. Hard to get first downs when the ball is always laying on the ground. Freddie Barnes anyone?

by whoadog on Mar 9, 2010 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

I agree completely.

The question I am asking, is why in those 4 games were we able to put something together and than the other 12 for the most part, those qualities in those 4 games were completely absent. Im just wondering how we can keep the catching consistent, and Cassels throwing consistent, things like that. I know the Oline and such would help, but there were games they were successful with the oline we had…
But I guess you are right, better players and better coaching sure would improve that. Thanks for the opinion =)

Injuries & human error ( cannot be overlooked ). Think about the play J. Page received a flag for an illegal hit : Only to receive an apology after the game ! Later : J,Page was placed on IR .Refs. do effect the outcome of games !

All it takes is time

and practice and the belief that together you are the best in the world. Having world class coaches come in to teach is a real positive.

New players new schemes offensive and defensive hurt that. But can be overcome with time.

Give them 3 or 4 yrs and a proven track record of building via the draft and we can become a dynasty….gee sounds like New England doesn’t it.

Nuff said…

you just have to start in the trenches and and that means the lines which is happening.

Why cant Charles always rush for 100 yards?

Give him an o-line similar to what Priest Holmes, Derrick Blaylock and Larry Johnson had and he sure will.

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

Any news on TJ?

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

I'm no expert but...

one of the big problems was stopping the other teams on 3rd down. The D would make nice plays on 1st and 2nd down (being aggressive), have a 3rd and 11, then the D backs would line up 10 yards back and back peddle and the linebackers would drop back at the snap. The other team would either throw the ball 12 yards to a WR for a 1st or would take advantage of our backers back peddling, throw over the middle to the TE or RB and by the time the D caught up, they’d have a 1st down. Hope Romeo sees that and does something about it.

full potential

they will reach their full potential with the coaches we have now, and if they cant reach their potential with Crennel and Weis then they can do it in Detroit or Buffalo

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
