Chiefs Re-Sign Chris Chambers To Three Year Deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have made their third move of free agency and it's a big one.

WR Chris Chambers has been signed to a three year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The total value of the deal could reach $15 million and there are $5.9 million in guarantees, Schefter reports.

This is excellent news for the Chiefs. He was one of a handful of unrestricted free agents that the Chiefs let hit the market.

He was considered a priority in the offseason. He reportedly drew some interest from the Cincinnati Bengals but nothing much came of it.

Chambers was far and away the best deep threat on the Chiefs last season. In nine games, he amassed 608 yards and four touchdowns so this is a big bonus for Matt Cassel as well.

I'm glad he's back

Maybe we can rid ourselves of the revolving door of WRs this year. Chambers came in and did a good job—borderline excellent one.

I agree Craig

Combine is very overrated.. I really don’t care how high someones vertical jump is, or how fast he runs in shorts and a t shirt.. I care about what the game tape shows. And Shipley has great hands. Would be a very productive slot receiver in my humble opinion.

wow, a whole one game, neat

Nah, i’m just playin, but what about mardy gilyard? not to mention tate. how come so many are higher on shipley, who’s projected to go in the 3rd, than they are on gilyard and tate who are projected to go much earlier, as early as mid 1st? is there some kind of backwards way of rating players for the draft where the best ones go last and the worst ones go first? just wondering

by E.C. on Mar 8, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be happy with Tate, Gilyard, or Shipley

I’d honestly rather have Tate the most.. I’m just thinking he might be gone before we get to pick 2A. If he’s still there when we pick in the second, I’d say we should probably draft him. I’m just guessing that he’ll be gone by the time we get to the second round.

Sounds like a reasonable contract for the Chiefs and Chambers

I am glad this is one less position we have to worry about as much. Now we don’t have to draft a receiver in the higher rounds, we have time to develop one. Now lets just get TJ and/or Fargas to shore up that position

everyone thinks that if we draft a later round WR “and give them time to develop” they’ll be better than any 1st rounder and as good as jerry rice? there’s usually a reason they’re going later in the draft; they’re not as good! not that they can’t be decent or maricles don’t happen. and i’m not saying that we should take an early WR or not take a later WR, i’m just sayin

Fantastic!

That’s two of the three major UFAs I wanted us to keep. Now, if we can just one-up the deals that Wade Smith gets offered elsewhere and keep him on as a utility back-up for our line …

Oh, and sign Thomas Jones.

by JacinB on Mar 8, 2010 2:54 PM CST reply actions

Not too worried about Wade Smith

Look at our young guys, Wade Smith is on that plateau, he’s not going to get any better.

Richardson didn’t look very good at RT, but filled in nicely at LT when Branden Albert went down, and Niswanger went down, and Wade Smith moved to C. Richardson is improving, did some time at RG during training camp, I’m guessing he’s miles ahead of where he was back during the preseason now at both tackle positions and he’s got in year in the zone blocking system.

Ndukwe, he didn’t look very good at RT, but the draft is coming up, if we take Jason Fox in rounds 2-3, or Cirion Black in rounds 4-5 Ndukwe can move back over to RG which is a more natural position for him.

Colin Brown is coming back, I’m convinced he’ll be a better LG than RG, but they were working him at RG last year. There’s no telling how severe his injury was last year, he’s an unknown. I keep telling myself his injury wasn’t too severe and he spent his year working with a coach on technique. Hey a guy can dream can’t he. Brown played some center in college, and if they’re working him at guard that works, and he was a RT and played a little LT in college. I don’t know if he’ll ever be a starter, but he has nice versatility. On his plus side he’s huge.

Niswanger, would be an ok backup center, but he’s probably more of a natural guard than center.

I know I know, other than Niswanger none of these guys has the playing time of Wade Smith, but something all of these guys has, is the ability to move around.

Think about it, yeah Wade Smith is that little car that’s extremely reliable, but he’s replaceable with what’s already on our roster, He’s hit that plateau, he’s not getting any better, and our young guys are.

I’d really like to see someone drafted to play RT, and trade for one of those zone blocking LT’s that are in a man scheme. Clady, and Chris Williams were both slated to be great to very solid zoneblocking LT’s, and Clady looked good in Shanahans system, then the system changed and Clady regressed and I’m sure McDaniels doesn’t see him as his LT of the future. Williams has been playing RT in Chicago and hasn’t been overly impressive. Either one would probably be a better LT for us than they are for their current teams and than who’s available in the draft.

Look at it like this, trade for Clady, and draft Jason Fox RT and Mitch Petrus or Sergio Render to play RG.

LT Clady
LG Albert
C Waters
RG Ndukwe/Petrus
RT O’Callaghan/Fox

Next season that would leave O’Dowd or Wisniewski to pick up.

Our weakness on the o-line isn’t depth, we have depth, it’s our starters. Look at it, that’s a better line than we fielded since Shields retired…….on paper.

by mcclanahanman on Mar 8, 2010 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

you are killing me - I wanted Clady over Dorsey

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Mar 8, 2010 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

If we could swing it

Send our first and Dorsey to Detroit for their first and second, Send off DJ for a 3rd.

Take Suh with Det’s first, Golden Tate with Detroit’s second, send our second to Denver for Clady along with our second fifth, Nate Allen S with Atlanta’s pick, Jason Fox OT with our 3rd, Terrell Troup NT with the DJ pick, fourth Mitch Petrus G, Myron Rolle S with our remaining fifth, draft another long snapper if we get a compensatory 7th.

Pick up Ellis or Porter OLB, and Foote ILB

Send our last fifth and a 3rd next year to Cleveland for Shawn Rogers NT.

That would give us that O-Line and a D-Line that looks like this.

DE Suh – Magee
NT Rogers – Troup
DE Jackson – Magee

LT Clady
LG Albert
C Waters
RG Petrus/ Ndukwe
RT O’Callaghan/ Fox

I want another WR, RB (TJ), and some Defensive help.

Alrighty then

Bowe, Chambers, and who? We need atleast one more proven guy to be the 3rd WR.

I would love if we signed Randle El to compete for a spot.

I would like to draft a WR in later rounds like we did with Lawrence. You never know when you will land a gem.

I think rookie is the way to go

Let a guy grow into it. Chambers and Bowe aren’t old, but 3rd WR is a cheap position to fill through the draft, and it’s also a position that can afford to have some minor growing pains. I only hope Cottam can heal up, stay healthy, and contribute 50/500/5.

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

by burntorangehorn on Mar 8, 2010 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Glad to see we got this done

Chambers deserved this deal, and he gives us the vertical threat Bowe does not. I still would like to draft Tate, or Shipley in the draft, so when Chambers starts slowing down in a couple of years we have someone to fill his shoes. Happy with this signing. And like everyone else has said, sign Thomas Jones or Fargas (would rather have Jones, but Fargas would come a lot cheaper), and then we’ll be talking.
