Reflections on FA, Draft and Reader Comments

On Free Agency: Since I haven't scoured the NFL FA board with a fine tooth comb, and don't work full-time in the NFL at any level, I don't presume to know who all is available at a decent value. But I don't mind responding to the "rumors" of who the Chiefs might or might not be considering after I've had a chance to look up their stats and such. I also know that fiscal irresponsibility is a bad thing in business just as it is in my own home. The deals being made the last couple of days (Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins) are just flat stupid IMHO.

On the Draft: I haven't spent the last 2-4 years researching and scouting college players, but Pioli, the coaches and the scouts have; even if it was for another team. They know who they want and what it will take to get them. So while I have preferences as to who we might draft, I also know that Pioli and company have a long history of maneuvering their picks up and down and wheeling and dealing to get the players they want to become one of the "right 53". If there's any possibility a pick will become a successful player and contributor to the Chief's success, it's up to the coaches to train and prepare him; and it's ultimately up to the player to apply himself to the coaching he receives.

Potential is a commodity that contains varying levels of risk. Every player drafted has potential and there is always a risk attached. No player is a sure thing. The draft is a gamble to an extent, except to say that you get to draft anyone on the board when your pick comes up...you get to choose your hand rather than getting a hand randomly dealt to you. I don't mind leaving those choices to those who know a whole lot more than me.

On Reader Comments: Sure I have preferences on FA and the Draft, but some fans are taking this FA and pre-draft chat a bit serious...and over the top frankly. In the words of Sgt. Hulka, "Lighten up Francis!" If you enjoy talking football, then enjoy it. If not...then log in to read the posts and don't comment.

Keep the faith Chiefs fans. Good times are ahead of us.
