We are an 8-8 team right now.

Go back to this time last year.

Todd Haley had just been hired after the Superbowl, and had scrambled to assemble a coaching staff.  He fired Chan Gailey, instead of wasting a season running an offense he didn't believe in.

Scott Pioli and Todd Haley have now put in place an All Star coaching staff, and have a full season to evaluate a young team, and determine what our needs are.  There will be continuity within the system, on both sides of the ball, as Weis and Crennel share Haley's philosophies and utilize virtually the same system.  We have a good core of young players, most who are in their 2nd to 4th year on the team, and now have played for Haley for an entire season.

Haley has a year of head coaching under his belt, and he admits it was invaluable to him, and that he made mistakes.  He instilled discipline and a team first mentality, that wasn't easy for some to accept, especially some veterans who were used to some preferential treatment and perks.  I think he learned to communicate better with the players, as the season progressed, and to better balance his emotions.  The team seemed to play hard for him for 16 games, and had probably their best game on the final Sunday.

We have an easier schedule this season.  We started last season against 3 or 4 playoff teams, at a time when the team was trying to learn a new system, and build confidence.  The AFC West has every team going through a transition phase, and the Chiefs may actually be ahead of the others, as far as stability.

I think considering all of the factors I have mentioned, we are an 8-8 team right now, with no personnel changes.  The players that Pioli and his coaches bring in will determine if we can rise from mediocrity and make a serious playoff run this season.

We are now in the Free Agency period, and there were no major splashes for the Chiefs in the first couple of days, and there likely won't be.  I am not one that believes in signing players to 80 million dollar contracts, unless they are a franchise quarterback.  I think the Chiefs will be smart in Free Agency, but will add some pieces and fill some holes that definitely need filled, but will continue to focus mainly on the draft.

I was frustrated when I saw no signings the first couple of days, except for a couple of our own players, but I shouldn't have been surprised, as it is Scott Pioli's way.  The Patriots weren't built by spending massive amounts of money on Free Agents, nor will the Chiefs be.

However, this is a pivotal year for our team, as if we don't see a good team on the field, that is in the playoff hunt late in the season, what direction do we go?  I don't think any of us can survive another housecleaning and rebuilding plan, that may take years to complete.  Fortunately, I don't think we will have to endure that, as I feel we have an underrated group of young players, and just need to add some pieces to be a playoff contender not only this season, but for seasons to come.

I think Scott Pioli builds teams for now, and 5 years from now, and we have a chance to be good for a long time, if the guys that make the decisions do it right.

Most difficult post to read ever

Unbold it and break it into some paragraphs please and I’ll give it another shot. :)

ty Joel, I hadn't seen the unedited version

decent stuff, not much new … have to DISAGREE with one thing from the post …

we are an 8-8 team right now, with no personnel changes

I can live with 8-8 (though we DO need to improve with the dragt to get there) and would be ok with 6 or 7 wins this year … so we miss the playoffs, big deal … getting 7 or 8 wins this year would be a huge step foreward, and that’s all we can ask …

and after that? keep pushing it forward … draft, draft and draft some more … keep it young, fresh, hungry

I agree..

We are not a playoff contender yet,but i think we are closer than most think. The draft is going to be HUGE for us this year,We will draft big and come out of it with A rating or better. This is Pioli’s year to shine as an expert Scout.

The Chiefs will not sign any big name F/A this early if at all.Look for some middle of the pack F/A to come to KC,some 2 year guys to help our youngsters and fill a couple holes.

GO CHIEFS!!!

After last year

And my Koolaid drinking binge, I’ll decline to say 8-8 although I can hope Porkchop is mixing up another batch! I do think we are on the right track, and I’m kind of fired up.

OK...the Koolaid buzz is gone now. I'm forced to admit that the state of the team had deteriorated far beyond what I had realized. The good news is I get to start mixing up a fresh batch of koolaid for next year. Oh Yeah!

Right Track, Yeah.

Now, just playing devil’s advocate here, but let’s consider a few things. The Patriots did in fact sign a few bigger free agent names in the past, Anyone remember Roosevelt Colvin? As I recall we were in the running for that guy too. Rodney Harrison was another, So was Junior Seau. The Patriots, while not active say in the way that the Redskins or the Bears this year, or for that matter, the Ravens this year have been, but they have been active in the past. Now, am I saying that Pioli is doing a “terrible” job…Blargh mutter venting spleen…No. I am a touch surprised that we haven’t lost more players, particularly ones that were tendered for draft picks, and I’m surprised by not getting Boldin, but…Other than that, I can’t say I didn’t see this coming to some extent. Bottom line, the guys we would have been looking at the most (Nose Tackles) were all locked up in a matter of a week or less. Every. Single. One. Of them. Other than Boldin, most of the quality free agents we would have sought were gone. Now, Thomas Jones is the onely one still worth looking at, and we might as well work out a deal with him, and focus on getting Chambers re-signed. As for, Kool-Aid, well…Sign me up for a pitcher, because I still think 8-8 is a touch too optomistic for us. Maybe 6-10, But not 8-8. Not unless we have a stellar draft of guys who are ready to comepete for starting jobs from the gun, and we get them in training camp on time, And they buy into the system quickly. Too many holes, not enough fingers to plug em all, folks. Still, here’s hoping I’m wrong and the Chiefs go 16-0 and take us all the way to an undefeated Superbowl season. Since we’re on the topic of Kool-Aid, Make mine Grape, Pork. XD

I agree with your

assessment, though I’m not sure we will get 8 wins this year. It would be nice. I think a lot is gonna boil down to what we do at the NT and S positions as we definitely need to stop giving up the big play on defense.

WR is also a very interesting position as of late, and I’m hoping we can get D. Bowe on track next season. Cassel could use a hand (or 8)….

by Hail2DaChiefs on Mar 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

31st in run defense

concerns me that unless there are multiple improvements to the D, I don’t think we go 8-8. However, with multiple adjustments to the D and a couple tweaks on O could take us beyond 8-8. I’m anxiously awaiting the rest of FA and the Draft to see how it all shakes out before making any bold predictions.

There is a tab you can select when you are composinng the post.

It allows you to see it as it will be displayed as yiou type, instead of just 1 big block of text that you have to highlight and apply paragraph, bullets, number and everything else too.

It’s by far the easier way to compose a post. But, you can’t import/copy paste a post from Word in that view. You have to use the default one and then go back and highlight / paragraph etc….

you're right, J-man

the Broncos COULD be a 7-9 or a 6-10 team :)

if they are lucky

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Racyman!

I’m glad to recognize a familiar name. Not sure if you’ll remember me or not by the name kc_radrh8r, but we used to discuss Chiefs news frequently on cbssports before I made the jump to this site (about September 2009 and have never gone back). I’m assuming you’re the same person by the name and from your mentioning of Idaho teams, so if you’re truly who I’m thinking of, you will be a great addition to this site!

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

Hey kc_radrh8r!

Hey bud! Yeah it’s me! Remember my John Wayne avatar? Damn it’s good to find someone familiar on these boards, and a great Chief’s fan to boot! Yeah, CBS sucks! The trolls continue to be there, most of the fans are so damn negative, that if you told them we traded for Peyton Manning, they would have something bad to say about it. Hell, I got into an argument with a fan who says Haley should be fired for yelling at the players! Yeah, them poor millionaire, 250 lb. players are probably scarred for life, because their coach raised his voice. They bash every move the team makes, and I get as tired of all of the negativity, as the damn trolls. I still check it out once in awhile, as I have a couple of friends on there, but I have mainly been AWOL for about 6 months. Lookin forward to chattin with ya bud! I really like this site! That was my first fan post, and I got all f’u**ed up. It wouldn’t accept the Word format, my paragraphs got lost, and the damn thing was all in bold print! Anyway, it took about an hour to figure the damn thing out. I think I will stick to reading everybody else’s posts.

Oh yea, I remember the John Wayne pic

I’ve only been posting regularly on here for maybe 5 months, but most everyone on here is very respectful. I was upset when I went to sign in one day and no longer could (I’m guessing, without naming names, thanks to someone who was emphatuated with John Cena…you should catch my drift), but I somehow stumbled upon this site so it all worked out for the better. You’ll enjoy it here much better. I just wish we could get some of the regulars from the other site on here because there were several great guys who could add a lot of great input here.

Anyway, I’m glad to hear from you again and dont hesitate to share your thoughts.

Don't worry Racy

The folks here are much more interested in what is said than who is saying it. Very respectful site. Nobody does the personal bashing thing here and very few seem to be as negative as those we are used to on the other site. Around here, it’s not about who is right or wrong, but rather what you have to say. There are alot of great posters here and Joel runs a good site. Looking forward to seeing you do some more posting! Have a good one my friend.

well done

i agree with you that we have a good core of young players ready to break out, that all they need is the opportunity and good coaching to take the next steps. players like djuan morgan, donald washington, alex magee, brad cottam, colin brown and javaris williams could become solid contributers next year.

The team seemed to play hard for him for 16 games, and had probably their best game on the final Sunday.

This should not be overlooked. The team that played that game is NOT a 4-12 team.

we were 4-12 last year

and i don’t think 8-8 is unrealistic; it very well might be our ceiling, but i think it’s possible. last year was just a tough kind of year; lots of shake ups and coming off a truly terrible year.

by E.C. on Mar 8, 2010 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think with everything in place

coaching-wise, and the players we already have on hand…we could go 8-8 and maybe better with a stopgap NT in Shaun Smith or Jamal Williams and a C for the OL, as long as we draft guys behind them to work them into the system instead of throwing them into the fire. It was a good post and well said. Good job!

I like the positive attitude

but the only way I can stay sane is to be satisfied that the Chiefs are an 8-8 team when they’ve won 8 games in a season. Sorta conservative, but I watched all sorts of fellow AP’ers on the brink after predicting we’d win the division last year. :) just sayin’

Right now the Chiefs are a 6-10 to 7-9 team.

After picking up Thomas Jones (7-9)
After picking/ trading/ drafting a OL who can play (RG or C) (still 7-9)
After drafting Eric Berry, Brandon Spikes, and Golden Tate/Terrance Cody (8-8 to 9-7)
After picking up/drafting a starting CB opposite of Brandon Flowers (9-7 to 10-6)

Just being real fellas. So guessing that we wont get another starting CB or OL we will be around 7-9
