Jamaal Charles Would Approve If Chiefs Signed Thomas Jones

The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in former New York Jets RB Thomas Jones for a visit on Monday. The man he's expected to complement if signed, Jamaal Charles, thinks adding another running back would be a good move for the Chiefs.

"These days you need an extra back at my position to carry the load because people these days get worn out," Charles said Saturday evening at the 101 Banquet Awards according to 810 WHB. "I think it'd be real good to have another running back."

Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has said finding Charles some help is a priority this offseason. It appears Thomas Jones has a good chance to be the help he was talking about.

"Thomas Jones," began Charles, "I know people are saying he's getting old, but he did a good job last year. He can still break tackles and score on the long distance."

Charles (and fantasy owners) would be the most affected by a Jones signing but he appears to be content with the possibility of bringing in another back.

This was my worry about signing Jones

I figured Jamaal might be upset about having to share the load, so it is good to hear that he is cool with it

Why?

Don’t forget JC willingly gave the chance to break all the time record for rushing yards in a game at Denver, so Javarris Williams and Tim Castille could gain value playing time experience.

I had no real reason to worry, and it was a small worry at that

I just figured he might be a little ticked that he had to share carries again, after the great season that he had

Williams

I’m curious about him too. Maybe we get lucky and he develops and we’ve got three solid RB’s.

I would still take JC in the 1st round of a FF Draft.

He showed lasted year that he could gain 1100YDs on less than 200ATTs. Give Charles and Jones each 200YDs. Jones will give you 800YDs and 10TDs, and Charles will give 1,200YDs and 5-10TDs.

This is all the more reason why we need to improve on the D.

To me it would make since for us to be able to run the ball very effectively next year. Now lets get the D that can slow down the opposing Offenses. Yes I’m defiantly aware of our OL problems and we should defiantly address them in the 2nd rd of the draft. But the OL at the end of the year was much improved over the beginning of the year.

by chiefs_fan05 on Mar 6, 2010 9:12 PM CST reply actions

The Oline was improved after Wade Smith was starting every week.

It’s pretty likely that he won’t be here again next year which still leaves us in a world of shit.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 6, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

I believe that the offense is still more the problem.

not saying that the defense doesn’t have holes.

When the defense is on the field for 35 minutes of a game that tells me it has more to do with the offense not being able to move the ball. Granted that is an improvement from a year before, but it is a vast problem that needs to be corrected. If the Chiefs can change that, without letting the defense score every time they touch the ball(meaning they have the ball for less than 45 seconds scoring a TD) then we should win many more a game.

Go Chiefs!!!!

JC is a team player. I doubt us signing Thomas Jones would limit him that much. Jones would probably get 10-15 carries a game, with Charles getting the 20-25.

yes

just keep hearing the new about him and the Chiefs i think it’d a done deal monday T-Jones will be a Chiefs it’s just the way it is i mean he sayhe has to much pride to go back there, then news comes out he will be here monday, then the players seem to be happy about it look at Twitter, now Charles say he don’t mind and will like it, o yea and did i forget he is good and also fills a need

~Im a star n the making just ask about me im soon to be da Chiefs 1st round pick~

Man JC just knows what to say..

This kid has a head on his shoulders… its very nice to have a professional RB that handles everything with class… this my sound biiter but damn I still smile knowing 2.7 is gone :)

No shit

Granted, LJ was always kind to me when I ran into him, but it’s clear he was a cancer, given how much the offense improved in his absence.

by GonzosDirtyTrailer on Mar 6, 2010 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

The reason Im so bitter was I always defended him to friends…. last year was the last straw.

by Chieffan_Toby on Mar 6, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

ugh LJ...he really made it hard at times because I disliked him so much.

Charles is the complete opposite…its refreshing.

No doubt

Ever since he learned how to actually hold on to the ball, JC has been awesome.

I'm with ya on that

There doesn’t seem to be anything i can’t love about the kid

I endorse a Thomas Jones signing

Important factoid to note: Thomas Jones has experience running behind a ZBS. He was very successful in Chicago’s ZBS. Not sure what the Jets currently run, I haven’t watched enough games to know.

My only concern is that Jones ran behind a helluva line in New York, which has prolonged his career. If he can be had for cheap, make it happen.

I have always liked Thomas Jones. He doesn’t make headlines and just flat-out produces. Reminds me of Priest Holmes in a way…a true professional. Would provide a positive role model for Jamaal Charles.

Also, bringing in a proven RB like Jones will allow Charles to still return kicks if we can’t find a servicable returner this year. I like the idea of signing Jones all around.

by Nick Britt on Mar 6, 2010 9:55 PM CST reply actions

Exactly, Nick Britt...

Just what I was thinking earlier – TJones reminds me of Priest too!
In fact they have similiar builds:
Jones 5’10" 215 lbs
Priest 5’09" 213 lbs

And each, great red zoners.

Also, good observation on ZBS.

I don't want Charles returning kicks at all

I’d hate to see him get hurt playing special teams. He is the heart and soul of our offense. You don’t see Chris Johnson or AP returning kicks or punts…He is our version of those guys.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 6, 2010 10:00 PM CST reply actions

Jamaals reaction to it is the least of my worries.

My concern is what Jones will think to playing second fiddle. Jamaal knows hes the man and as long as he goes out and does what hes capable of he will continue to be the man. Jones on the other hand might not like that so much.

What week was it when we finally scored a rushing TD?

Week 6 or 7? Im all for bringing in Jones. It was a shame that we couldnt move the ball until JC stepped in. We have to have someone who inside the 5 yard line can power the ball through. Sign him up and split the load. If JC is happy, Dorsey is twittering it well then everyone else has to be happy as well. Get him to KC, show him around, and have a contract that he wants and get him. Even though he is 31, with Jones and JC we could easily have the best two running backs in the AFC West.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

I'm proud Jamaal Charles is a Chief.

First, giving up playing time at the end of the Denver game, and now this.

He’s unselfish, a team player, grateful and above all, a class act.

I'm glad Jamaal is ok with it.

But let’s not pretend his opinion matters one iota in regards to whether or not Pioli will pursue TJ.
