Former Jets RB Thomas Jones To Visit The Chiefs On Monday
Well, well, well. Not too long after I wondered why it's gone so quiet on the Thomas Jones front, we hear from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Kansas City Chiefs will host the veteran running back for a visit.
Jones will be traveling to the Chiefs facilities on Monday.
The Jets were reportedly interested in retaining him but some thought he was too prideful to return to a team that just cut him.
Jones was scheduled to receive a $4 million bonus before being released by the Jets so it's hard to gauge what kind of contract he's looking for. At age 32 31, his long-term options are likely limited.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has said on numerous occasions that finding someone to complement Jamaal Charles is a priority. The Chiefs were also reportedly strongly interested in acquiring Darren Sproles until the Chargers tendered him at the first and third round level.
I'd say it's looking good for the Chiefs right now. Usually teams don't want a player to leave without a contract if the visit goes well.

We'd have a pretty killer rushing attack with Jones and Charles
I hope he doesn’t leave without a contract
KRRRAKATAWAA
I am one of the people crying...
And no, I will not stop crying. Don’t we already have a pretty good RB? I am just saying it looks like to me we would be better off getting a WR, OT, G, C, NT, ILB, OLB, or maybe even a S.
I am just saying…
You can never have enough good players
If one is available, and you can sign him, you do it. These things are not mutually exclusive, you can sign a RB and still go after your needs.
+1
I agree. I am just afraid if we spend 3 or 4 million on him, Pioli will think he can’t spend anymore. After all, according to USA Today Salaries Database we have paid out the least amount in the nfl on salaries the past two years. I am beginning to think Clark Hunt is in it for the money, not to put a winning team on the field.
Doubtful
If Clark was in it only for the money then he wouldn’t have spend a fortune on #1 prospects Pioli, Weis, and Sir Romeo
I agree,
I am stoked about our coaches. I really can’t believe we got the guys we did. It just disturbs me, with the amount of money we have spend the past two seasons. That’s all.
Pioli
was brought in here for a reason. He might be playing this strategically planning for a future cap in which the redskins and the bears (new redskins?) are going to be screwed. This year is tough with the limited amount of free agens. Pioli went after Boldin and now is Jones. He is showing that he is trying.
Sweeeeeet!!!
Jones is a machine!!!

He's the best RB available and I love it if we got him
oh and
Pioli needs to get off his ass

idk much about the guy
Age? Can he block? Can he catch the ball? Connection with Weis/Haley/Patriots?
Only people who carry the opinions of others need the support of others.
Thomas Jones 31
Career 4.0 average rusher out of 2280 carries….62 total TD with 14 last season.

Unless he's bringing TRich with him..
…can we really expect he’ll be as good as he has these last few years?

I am glad to see some action
But at 32, I can’t see how this is a fix for more than a year or two.
Predictions:
1) Fans will feel just scads better from mid-to-end of the 2010 season.
2) During the 2021 season, Ryan Succop will become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1469 points.
He is 31

He Will Be 32 Next Season
History has demonstrated that running backs drop off a cliff at 32, production-wise.

Yeah
But he will not be a full time back…big difference. Plus Thomas Jones is in amazing shape!

He does put a lot of emphasis on conditioning.
Makes sure his body is tip top.

History shows that featured backs in a one back offense
drop off, Jones has shared the load his entire career. Never has had any injury problems and prodused wherever he was
Point Taken
And yes…cutting carries does help with the decline in several cases (e.g. Fred Taylor).
I suppose it wouldn’t be the worst signing now that there’s no salary cap. I do have that knee-jerk response ingrained from the days where a contract like the one he’s likely to get would kill our team for years.

True
but Jones is not going to be the full-time back. He is going to come here to compliment Charles; so we don’t wear down JC as fast we did LJ.
Here's a pretty good highlight video from last season

I’d say he’s still got something

Great Vid!!!
Looks outstanding!

This is a good sign if we get him.
Rome is a big fan of “The Coal Miner’s Son.” Awesome worth ethic. Good example for the whole team.
I like TJ
He’s been a heck of player for a number of years. And he still has something left in the tank IMO. Good teamate and character guy aswell.
But at the same time, I’d prefer us go for a lesser known compliment to Charles. My fear is that despite last seasons success, Charles will be reduced to a 12 – 17 carry back with a player with Jones’s resume added to the mix.
JC should only ever be a 12 to 17 carry back with maybe 3 to 4 catches
He should never be more than a 20 touch guy. If charles averages 5.0 ypg, not unrealistic considering his breakout last season, on 15 carries a game, that’s 75 yards a game average, times 16 games is 1100 to 1250 yards. I can live with that if TJ is getting the other 750 to 900 yards on the other 15 to 20 carries.
This only helps JC. It makes us a lot better.
don't agree
with that at all. I’m all for JC being a 20-22+ carry lead back who also gets 4 or 5 receptions a game. Limiting him, stunting him, only makes us less dangerous IMO. Jones will be no where as effective as he’s been the last couple of seasons behind our offensive line … compared to what he had in NY. The more touches he takes away from JC the worse it is for the team.
TJ would be a nice addition, and I won’t be mad if we get him. I just don’t think think he necessarily makes us noticeably better. I’d rather have a BIG power 3rd down/goal line running back … a true compliment to JC’s speed and smaller size.
We’ll see what happens though.

He's more of a 15-18 touch back, including catches.
Unless he puts on about 10-15 lbs lbs, which may just fuck with his speed.

I think Jones will be a great addition to the Chiefs.
And for all of the panic and dissapointment that is running rampant becuase of the Chiefs lack of free agency moves, I give this qoute from the guys on NFL network
“We are talking about David Carr being a hot commodity and it is only day 2 of free agency. That tells you how shallow of a free agent pool it is this year”

jones is nice but
He’s not going to have luxury of T-Rich or one of the best o-lines blocking for him. Can’t we get some olineman in here?

You can't force anyone to sign and you want to be prudent
…but it pleases me to at least entertain folks
theres some good news!
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Cassel can lead us.
and then we'll blame pioli

The NFL is turning into a league where you need two solid backs.
I think this will help Weis come up w/ some interesting formations for us as well. I could see us getting away w/ some good screen passes w/ them both in the backfield at the same time.
I don't see that
After all, the NFL used to be a 2 back system with your RB and a FB in the backfield, like you said you would like to see happen. The NFL is evolving more into a 1 back set with more of a passing attack. However, your statement is partly true, in that a lot of teams are using 2 RBs. (Don’t know how “solid” they both are, nor are they typically on the field at the same time.)
I think "if" we sign him it will help with us in more situational football.
Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles together should help us make the Defense and D-Coordinator have to work a little harder on what to do against which ever RB is in. Just throwing that extra wrench into the game planning for the opposing D-Coordinators
sign him up if he can spell Charles and keep him fresh and from getting injured
Im all for it, even if its only for 1-3 years then we dont have to use a draft pick in this years draft on a RB
This is true, but
I wonder how much better we would have been if our WRs would have simply caught the ball.
Yea, I wonder how many drops were for at least 1st downs. Hard to score if you cant move the sticks.
We need Chambers back and some talent out of the draft.
rather they got Fargas!
Hes younger and has lots of miles left. He has never really been given an ample opportunity to succeed in oakland and would be cheaper.
