Report: Chiefs Pursuing Former Patriots DE Le Kevin Smith

The New England Patriots among other teams were reportedly interested in signing defensive end Le Kevin Smith in free agency.

The Providence Journal reports the Patriots are not in the running and instead GM Scott Pioli and the Kansas City Chiefs are in pursuit. Smith, 27, is 6'3", 308 pounds and has only played in a 3-4 defense in his career.

Le Kevin Smith was originally a 2006 sixth round pick by the Patriots (And Pioli). Last August Bill Belichick traded him to Josh McDaniels and the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos didn't offer him a tender putting him out on the market.

The Boston Herald reported that the Patriots and several other teams were interested in him at the start of free agency.

Smith would appear to provide depth along with Alex Magee behind Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson.

If we sign him

he would be one of the kind of signings Ive been expecting from the Chiefs

I agree

Won’t start, won’t really make a difference…

I'm okay with this

Build quality depth, but pick up a few solid youngsters that we can grow with. Let’s get consistent and try to find our superstars in the Draft.

Charles to the 20... 10... TOUCHDOWN! KANSAS CITY!

What did the Broncos give up to get him from the Pats?

Trade

Pats gave up Smith and a 7th rounder for the Broncos 5th rounder.

just like last year. signing people we barely know.

raiders released RB Justin Fargas. we could go after him.

Yeah I hate

To be a negative Nancy but this “patriots connection” BS is really getting old. Can’t we just make our own team without patriots connections. I don’t care if they won a few superbowls picking up their D teams players won’t change anything around KC. Frustrating.

If Pioli drafted and liked player a few years back, he probably still likes him

If we are going to keep going after Pats

Lets get some of the good ones – not their castoffs.

by WyoChief on Mar 6, 2010 5:52 PM CST reply actions

My question is

If the Broncos and Pats have both had him and don’t want him, why do we? Its not like he’s going to cost anything. He must not be very good.

I just dont freaking get some people on here

the last 2 days people have been on here bitching and moaning that we arent making any moves we arent signing anyone, then word comes out that we might be interested in bringing this guy in and now everyones bitching about that. Some of you need to make up you minds whether you want Pioli to sign people or not, we are not a SB contender so we arent going to sign overpriced FA to maybe put us over the top, we are going to sign guys to smaller contracts that fit in and are more or less role players. If this guy can come in for cheap and be a back up why not sign him, who knows maybe under Crennel he can make some kind of an impact for our team

All this is is assumptions by "journalists" because they can't come up with an original thought

Every Patriot castoff is considered a potential player for any other team with a coach/upper management with a Patriot connection. It’s just laziness from the people doing the reporting. It’s easy to say, the readership would tend to agree, and no one would check behind them. No one knows who Pioli is really going after or interested in, yes they have brought in some people they are familiar with, but GEEZ they are not interested in every single ex-patriot/belichek/parcells castoff. If these guys, in this case the Providence Journal, would actually do some real work instead of just submitting some crap to his editor so he can make his quota we’d get some real news, fact is there ain’t much out there.

Also, I agree with Banshee, some people are just freaking out. If you want to be a fan of team that signs a bunch of FA’s and still doesn’t win, go watch the Bears or the Redskins. Pioli and co. are only going to bring in folks that can help the team and they are going to smart and systematic about it. We won’t overpay, we won’t make a massive splash, and it won’t happen quick, so don’t expect it, and if something does happen you will be happier for it.

"We wont overpay"????

Then how the hell did Cassel become the 3rd highest paid QB in the league?Because he led the previously 16-0 Pats from the prior season to a 11-5 record.Hell I could have won 4 games playing QB on that team.Cassel hasnt proven anything and Pioli hands him 11million a year….give me a break.

We've been watching this team "rebuild" now for what? 22 of the last 30 years.

We have definatly earned the right to be skeptical, and quite frankly a little pissed off at all this inactivity. I am holding my breath and biting my lip for one more season. Anything less than 8-8 and my season tix will be on craigslist.I am running out of patience with this orginazation.

I would love your season tickets

if they sign him

McGee was a total waste of a draft pick. could have done a whole lot better there.

by rdc on Mar 6, 2010 6:35 PM CST reply actions

guys this is the so called process

there are still 7 free agent OL that would be very nice for us. Pioli has been so secretive since coming here really most of us havent a clue what he has tried to do. in saying that, i still thought we would do more than palko and battle. Could brodie croyle be up for trade?? As a back up he has some upside. disagree about magee, not all rookies start out looking good. im not a homer, i still think we should pick up a solid free agent or 2. go chiefs!!, lol

Blew out his knee last year

We already have talent on the roster that provides depth…we need starters.
