Free Agents Remaining that can help the Chiefs...

Most of the talent left is over 30 but several players could upgrade our team for a year or two and give us flexibility in the draft to not reach for a position.

C Kevin Mawae – has a past with Weis and Haley at the Jets and still much better than niswanger even if he is 40 (now a man see Coach Gundy)

G Bobbie Williams – huge mauler for the run offense still has a few years left.  Great locker room guy too.

NT Jamal Williams – coming off injury but still worth the risk.

DE Jarvis Green – allows us some depth and versatility on the D Line.  Another 3-4 D Lineman that fits very well into our defense is a very good thing.

NT Fred Robbins – at 33 still has a few years left and with no options at NT available would be good rotational guy to have.

WR Kassim Osgood – GREAT special teams player and worth a roster spot.  A cheap way to improve a unit that got much better last year.

ILB Larry Foote - solid ILB that played well for Pitt and should come very cheap and be an upgrade.

TE Ben Watson - would be an upgrade and now that the first day has come and gone and he did not get any attentio should come at a good price.

WR Chris Chambers - no need to explain.

WR Antwan Randle El - should be cheap and solid player that could play slot for us.

TE Ben Hartsock - just a solid blocker that would help the run game.

OG Rex Hadnot - big physical run blocker that seemed to do ok against the chiefs when they ran for 1000 yards in one game.

DE Tyler Brayton - solid starter than can play 3-4 or 4-3 DE.  Good depth.

OLB Joey Porter - still had more sacks than any Chief last year.  Would be nice opposite Hali.

OLB Scott Fujita - still mad we let him go.  Not a great player but seems to play smart and do his job.

ILB Antonio Pierce - now that Chedder Bob (plaxico) is in Jail should be safe signing.  Not sure how much he has left with injuries etc but good player.

CB Leigh Bodden - the player i hope we sign the most that is left.  Really good year for the Pats last year and would be nice addition opposite Flowers.

S Darren Sharper - i dont care if he has one year left only he played amazing last year and would be worth it to add some leadership to this team.

FS Brodney Pool - should come cheap with all his concussions and Romeo knows him well just not sure how much he has left.

FS Ryan Clark - good player but i am scared he just did so well because he was next to Polamalu.  With our current safeties anything is an upgrade.

I think now that the smoke has cleared a lot of the restricted guys will be getting looks and traded.  Those 3 5th round picks could be key in acquiring some talent since pretty much every team just tendered all their players and will look to trade them if they have no intention of keeping them.

On a side note.  We are so blessed to be in the AFC West!  Even with only about 50 million payroll now (per Nick Wright) we should be able to compete in this division.  San Diego has me scratching my head and AJ Smith reminds me so much of King Carl.  Started out with a bang with Marty and then slowly gets worse and his business ethics are just poor.  They pulled off the Eli trade and it saved them for 5 years but they are getting worse by the year.  Rivers and Jackson are studs but after that i see nothing.  I actually understand what McDaniels is trying to do as the Cutler trade was great but they have to draft better with purging the old talent.  I do like what Denver has done in free agency the last 2 years switching to 3-4 but losing Nolan was a huge mistake.  Oakland...well I think that is the only thing saving the Hunt family is that we are in the same division as Oakland and they are so pathetic its amazing (yet they beat us at home!)

I think Pioli goes to work this weekend now that the big names are off the board (I am such a Pioli and chiefs homer)

Leigh Bodden would be a great sign!

I also have been beating the Atogwe drum around here. He’s restricted at the the lowest level so I I think we could pry him from the Lambs.

On Bodden

I like Carr as a starter still developing, but doesn’t it seem like if we had another strong CB, that Carr would be a BEAST at nickel?

when Pioli said we would be active in FA......

maybe he meant just by resigning our own guys. Way to go to improve the team!!

Really? It’s been one day. One bad day of free agency can ruin your team for a decade. It’s better to sit back and let the smoke clear instead of doing anything crazy.

true

but i just think we’re all a little frustrated because everyone we wanted on our list is gone… and now our own players are leaving

Wade Smith? That’s really not that big of a deal. Chambers is most likely just looking at the market. It’s what most free agents that aren’t getting a huge amount of money and a long-term contract do.

Actually losing Wade Smith is a pretty big deal

We may have to sign two marginal back-ups to replace him. He wasn’t great, but he was a great role player.

by 3GChief on Mar 6, 2010 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

As far as role players go, he was good at his job and was competent at more than one position. But in the big picture losing Wade Smith isn’t going to mean much to this team. With an improvement at center Niswanger will prove to be just as competent as a back-up lineman and another can be picked up if needed. We’re not talking about losing crucial pieces of the team here. It seems like we still have a pile of marginal OL without Alleman and Smith.

I agree it has only been one day and there is no reason to be upset yet

but sitting back waiting for the smoke to clear is not going to get additional talent on the team. We haven’t missed out on anyone that I thought we could possibly sign but we also are not hearing much in the way of players being invited in. There are some quality players available that could help this team. I think the secrecy is beginning to wear thin.

I also don’t really think a bad day at free agency would set the team back for a whole decade but I get your point.

WIth our current regime, you gotta watch the connections first...

So, Jarvis Green, Rex Hadnot and Brodney Pool seem possible.

Like you said about Chambers, no need to explain. I can honestly say I never thought I would say that about having him on my team.

I can also see Osgood as a potential guy based off his ST play and untapped receiver potential.

pretty much what i was thinking too.

osgood may be good bye!

We reported Friday that Chargers special-teams ace Kassim Osgood would launch his free-agent tour in Jacksonville.

Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union noted earlier today that, indeed, Osgood is in Jacksonville, meeting with the Jaguars.

Per a league source, Osgood and the Jags are working on a deal. There’s a chance it gets wrapped up today.

Which means that there’s a chance that it won’t be.

why is Casey Weigmann not on this list?

I know he’s old, but I think he’d be worth signing for a year as a stop gap – if he’d come back. I still think we need to draft one of the top one or two centers available.

Randle El

NO THANKS! I live in VA and watched him do pretty much nothing for the skins all year. I still say we trade down somewhere in the draft and stock pile picks. But if we get any FA now I vote for Kevin Walter from the Texans or did he get picked up already….?

I want K.C. Wolfs' job!

y'all are kidding, right?

35 and 40 year old FA’s? come on, no way …

why? how is Zach Thomas Ver 2.0 better than last year’s FA mush? people, for real … it’s called The Draft … use it, love it, build from it

I agree 100 percent

But you can only get so many players in the draft that contribute. You have to fill in the holes some how.

by onthereg on Mar 6, 2010 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

And there are certain holes on this team that you dont want to fill with a rookie

NT and O LINE especially….then WR in my opinion…If you want to compete this yr, you cant lay it all on young inexperienced players… We have missed out in FA already. The Chiefs are being cheap. Just like they were when CP was running the show. They dont want to up the money for a key FA that has proven himself in the NFL…Having a young team means you have a low payroll and maybe you will get lucky. So expect to see us sign a couple guys on the verge of being past their prime that come cheap. Same ol shit.

by KCinAZ on Mar 6, 2010 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

I totally disagree with you ...

this isn;’t being “cheap” this is being intelligent … yes you CAN lay it all on young, inexperienced players … because when you have good coaches and a sound plan, those kids can mature very quickly

you don’t toss together overpriced junkyard scraps and call it a “car” or even “art” … you build with fresh, new parts … cheap is going to the junkyard for new spark plugs, intelligent is going to NAPA and getting BRAND NEW spark plugs, and wires … etc etc ad nauseum

last year we saw what “experienced FAs” are like … Thomas, Engram … no thank you!

Please see the last line in my post.

There is not one, STAR, player on this team. If you want to call Charles a star after only starting half a season, or Cassel, after his lackluster season last yr, or our doped up WR that dropped too many passes, stars go ahead. The rest are either washed up, or still getting their feet wet.
We have cap room and we are not using it.Period. Other teams are making moves to make their teams better and we are sitting on our hands watching and waiting. We will end up picking up some other teams throw aways just like last yr. You see how far that got us? 4 wins.

by KCinAZ on Mar 6, 2010 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

And since we didnt fill any holes with proven players look for us to REACH again this yr on a player to fill a position of need.

Our draft position makes us miss out on the two good NT in the draft, Berry may be there but thats not gonna help our D line get pressure on QBs, and if we go for Okung, that means we leave our QBs blindside in the hands of a rookie and Albert has to learn a new position….We have money and should be using it to our advantage..

by KCinAZ on Mar 6, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

i think kevin mawae said he wants to go on a championship caliaber team so i dont think he’ll come here. plus hes only a stop gap guy so i dont want him.. larry foote wouldn’t be a bad addition. especially if we somehow trade DJ

call me crazy but

i would try signing a veteran NT.. like maybe jamal williams.. and then picking up another NT in the draft and switch them around… it might cost a lot but NT is an important position in our defense

Agreed

NT to me was 1 of 2 spot’s i thought we should go after hard on the FA market, the other was WR. I was dreaming of V.Wilfork and A.Boldin, now that dream has turn into shite. Damn it we need a vet NT bad, or i can see us reaching for NT with our first pick.
Signing a Vet NT would just make the draft easier for us, if not we have to shore up the middle of our “D” meaning NT, ILB, and FS through the draft. I really don’t see us getting that lucky, and finding 3 starters in those positions when we need to address the o-line too.
Lets see, C/G has to be addressed, and WR, that’s 5 starters in one draft, i don’t see it happening. I’m just going to have to relax and realize that we aren’t going to be a good team, for another 2 years. I was going to say we could make a playoff push next year with the right FA’s, but then i remember, we have Cassel. So instead we get to waste another 3 or 4 years on a QB that really can’t get it done. I hope to god he proves me wrong, but don’t say i didn’t tell ya when it happen’s.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 6, 2010 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

reaching for a NT scares me too

but keep in mind we can always make trades too. and as for cassel i think he can be good especially with weis but we need a damn o line and recivers who can catch the damn ball. I know this is a good draft class but we’re still gonna need a few free agents to help us out

Sounds groovy to me

Also, I think we should give DJ another chance…..he has the talent and potential that the new Def Coordinator can work with. I thing Jamal Williams would be a start in the right direction.

I remember how shocked all the "experts" were

when the Browns DIDNT draft Derrick Johnson. Like you said, maybe Romeo can put him to good use.

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

Sorry Guys...

but all this talk is nonsense to me. On one hand, we’re bitching about NOT going after some of the bigger-named players because they’re toward the end of their careers. Talk is that the draft picks will give us more production that will enable the Chiefs to keep and grow our own for years to come. Then we turn around and start praising some of the less-talented folks who are all over the ripe, old age of 30. Not attacking you personally Reg, just stating a point. If we were going to pay for the vets with minimal years left, why not dive in head first into the opening day hooplah and snag some key players that can contribute right away vice taking a chance on some of those “less qualified” FAs?

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

Remaining free agents

Great Blog, and some good names to consider. Some things we need to remember before we all have strokes about the Chiefs inactivity in FA. The corp group of players we have are now in their 3rd or 4th year, and will likely perform at their peak level, especially with real coaching. I don’t see last year’s draft as a disaster, as some do. Jackson’s job, in the 3-4, is to occupy blockers, and allow our LB’s, safeties, etc., to get pressure in the backfield. Alot of people look at sack numbers, and consider him and Dorsey failures. That isn’t their main responsibility. We have players like Magee, Mays, Studebaker, Flowers, Carr, Brandon Albert, Gilberry and many more, that have just scratched the surface, as they all had to learn new systems. I think Pioli and his Superbowl winning coaches now have had a chance to evaluate the talent on the team and will make decisions based on that evaluation. I will be upset if we lose Wade Smith, who IMO, was the best O-lineman on the team, and can play any position on the line, or Chambers, but I don’t know the roster near as well as the leaders of the team. I have never seen overspending on a bunch of aging big names turn into a Superbowl win. You can be good, yet smart, in FA.
