Chiefs Sign One Player On First Day Of Free Agency
The Chiefs signed one player for their first (and only) move on day one of free agency.
Who is the player? Drum roll, please.....
RB Jackie Battle!
I know, I know. Not that exciting.
Battle was an exclusive rights free agent which basically meant he had an expiring contract and two or less years of service.
Battle is actually very athletic running the 40-yard dash in the 4.4 range with a 240 pound frame.
However, that hasn't translated to the field. During training camp and pre-season, some folks were wondering if Battle was passing Jamaal Charles on the depth chart but that of course was short-lived.
Battle will enter training camp and should be battling (pun intended) with RB Javarris Williams for a roster spot.
Of course, now that I've written a headline that says the Chiefs have signed one player on day one of free agency they'll sign six more tonight and make me look like a dummy.

Maybe first would have been a better term than one.
Then again others might have felt led on, and gave you all another 1000000 clicks.

But I just went to the store and picked up a 12 pack. Ms. Primetime is out with her friends so I’m drinking and blogging all night!

Wow...
So we sign Battle, and in the meantime miss out on Bolden, Chester Taylor and a slew of other players we were “in the running for.” I am so disappointed that we haven’t signed one single big name playmaker, and as the hours pass, so does our window of opportunity. Hell we can’t even re-sign Chambers!
We can sign Chambers yet :)
funny that the Boldin picks offered in 1st post adjusted in the second post.
I think Pioli made that happen.
Wonder what the offer was exactly for you sleuths of AP :)

I have faith that Chambers will be resigned.

It is not going to be pretty fellas...but this too shall pass

just threw up in my mouth....
Ok. I managed to choke it back down
I would not be shocked
they are a team going out there and making moves. I don’t know what the hell we are doing, we have a ton of cash. Maybe they’re going to take advantage of the uncapped year… by dropping below the cap floor.
No.

CHAMPIONSHIP!
The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones
Very Dissappointed in Scott Pioli
Thought they would of done more and got more people. Guess we can just look to the draft because there is no one else of real interest that will help like some of the ones today.
Ugh oh well guess we’ll continue to live in the same attitude of not picking any good top FAs. On to the draft

I guess this is what Pioli meant by
being “active”
Being active to Pioli obviously means losing all of our good free agents to other teams...
and not doing shit to improve our lowly squad.
Battle sucks. He could have been gone and none of us would have noticed.

Were there a lot of teams lookin at Battle. Seriously was this a priority? Couldn’t we have signed him when we signed the other hacks before free agency started. What did it take to sign Jackie Battle?

Wow! Jackie battle..nothing else to say
Disapointing day with a lot of hope early this afternoon to land a big name/great piece, but great job job on the coverage today AP! Cmon Scott make it happen son! Make something f***ing happen!

Well,
I was on the fence for getting season tickets and making the ten hour drive every Sunday, and this signing has sealed the deal. Can’t wait to see Battle next year (holding Charles’ gatorade) on the sidelines!
Sorry, just a little grumpy…but seriously, Pioli has two jobs—to win, and to sell (literally) the team to the fans. I really really hope he does well in the first category, because the second one…anyone have more Newcastle?
Question
If we were to get Wilfork would it not mean a sign and trade?
Maybe that was Pioli/Chiefs money that New England used to resign Wilfork.
Just a thought
"For what we are about to see next, we must enter quietly into the realm of genius." Scott "Young Frankenstein" Pioli
Yeah not to blow smoke cause NE might really keep him but
maybe we have worked a trade and Pioli signed off on the money.
Seems an appropriate amount in 2010 and we have already determined the picks just not announced yet. What do we think Pioli was doing all day anyway?

yeah it's getting annoying...really
Pioli needs to accept the fact that if you want good free agents, you need to be willing to pay more than they are probably worth. There’s no consolation in 2nd place.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Tell that to Snyder of the Redskins, and Smith of the Bears.
Oh wait.. they were 28th, and 21st best teams in the league this year. I’ll settle with the way we are going with things if this lands us in 2nd place.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Yes, I know
and I wouldn’t have wanted to give up the picks the ravens did for Boldin anyway…but as a fan it’s still disappointing when the only FAs who are brought in are the guys nobody else wants.
Predictions:
This year will be better
I have a feeling that
it just might not be untill next week untill we sign someone. I doubt that we will see anything occur over the weekend.
Then again there is the offshoot chance that we will pull in Sproles… who knows.
There was little chance that big names were going to come to Kansas City, yet alone leave for another team this year.
Go Chiefs!!!!
I'm not disappointed by them resigning him and I hope that I am wrong
… I just can’t see it happening right now.
Go Chiefs!!!!
With fans like some of you guys are acting if I was a player I wouldn’t even want to go to kc. You make it sound like he didn’t give it a shot. Now I don’t know why he didn’t come here seems to be like it was the ravens all the way seeing as he had a contract finished minutes after trade was done, so then it becomes were we to cheap on our contract offer or did boldin want the ravens all along and none of us can currently answer that questions. Next is walter he resigned so I highly doubt unless someone overpaid probably wasn’t going anywhere. Still could land jones who would be a nice power back to spell charles which some people are mocking we draft in the 2-3rd round so here’s to hoping for that and cheer up chiefs fans it could be worse

hahah damn it i got excited ....
then i scrolled down
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.
--- Any given sunday
Cassel can lead us.
Just saw
that Peppers deal is for 6 yrs $91.5 mil with $42 mil guaranteed. Now do people still wish we would have signed him
and Rolle got something like $37 million with $15 million guaranteed
thanks but I will pass on both, like just about every other FA that signed today, way overpaid
The Peppers deal was way over the top
Not so sure about Rolle’s….$15m guaranteed over a number of years isn’t that bad. I don’t think all the roster holes can be filled via the draft.
Predictions:
This year will be better
YES! Pioli should sign every free agent and trade for every superstar there is in the nfl… This should be our team with pioli
Peyton
Brees as his back up
Ap
Charles johnson
Charles
Larry fitzgerald
Megatron
Boldin
Bring back tony g for a 5th rounder
Joe thomas, steve hutchinson, micheal oher, nick mangold, move alber to right guard
Wilfork
Peppers
Seymour
Trade up and get suh
Dansby
Patrick willis
Mayo
Revis,flowers
Troy p and shit let’s draft berry while we are at it

theres a difference between being cheap and being smart
and Pioli is one of the smartest guys in the business, none of us know what he has planned so instead of calling him cheap and not wanting to go after anyone how about we wait and see what he has instore for this year
agreed
but boldin was attainable, that one stings! We better not miss on our second 2nd rounder because essentially could have had boldin for whoever we draft there…and 4 yr 28 mill isn’t too crazy
by CHEEFN58 on Mar 5, 2010 9:46 PM CST via mobile reply actions
so you would be ok with giving up a 2nd round pick
for a player who has what 4 maybe 5 years left, I seriously think that the Ravens were his 1st choice all along, he wasnt going to go to a team thats not a contender right now
clark better start looking out
for his reputation as far as being cheap.like david glass of the royals has been spending quit a bit of money but still has a national rep as being cheap, its very hard to shed that label once you get it.lamar spent quit a bit but unfortunatly king carl was spending it.now his son takes over and wont even make a token gesture towards improving this team, sad….
huh?
So, how do you know if Clark has a “national reputation” for being cheap? People around this blog have been bitching for a whole year that we spent too much on Cassel. And LJ. I don’t think the NFL sees Clark as cheap.

its harder when
you live in dolphin country and they sign dansby right away and they are building a franchise the right way as well,i just wish pioli could try and convince clark to spend a little because we cannot possibly take care of are needs in the draft.
The Chiefs
will make it right by kicking ass on the fish soon enough. Fuck them.

I think Hunt gave Pioli a budget
and he used it all up on coaching hires….oops

Yes
if our second 2nd rounder turns into a pro bowler player and has a long KC career then probably not, But that is no guarantee as we have proven over time. I guarantee you Boldin is a beast right now and is a pro bowl type player now and for the next 3-4 years. Plus we already have a 2nd rounder good time to move a pick for a player! but I do think bal. was his 1st choice, we probably have to go 4 year 33 mill to get him, but were 60 mill under the invisible cap.
by CHEEFN58 on Mar 5, 2010 10:01 PM CST via mobile reply actions
All of you negative people are right
Pioli should have just called up every FA at 12:01 this morning and offered every one of them a guaranteed $100 mil contract
Make it 200 mil just to make sure clark isn’t to cheap

The way I see it..
I love what Pioli is doing.
Look..hes building a winner..through the draft. When you draft a player, you bring a guy into his first NFL system. he learns YOUR way, and he was brought in specifically because he’s a fit to the system.
Bringing in these big names are guys who are used to doing things a certain way. They dont always fit in with what we’re trying to do. Boldin..great player..but a 3rd round pick could be used on a WR to play in the Slot behind Chambers until hes ready to take on the starter role. We just need guys who can catch the ball..they dont have to be spectacular.
The only big name FA I had my eye on was Stephen Neal from NE but hes lookin to resign so thats out the window. I cant blame him..I’d want to stay too. But anyways..bringing in 2nd and 3rd tier FA’s is…IMO..the best way to bring in DEPTH. The draft is the best way to bring in your top players.
I do want to throw something out there..
If we trade DJ, we could end up with Berry AND McClain. Now..I’m honestly not all sold on McClain but IF he lives up to his ‘potential’..that could be a hell of 1st round. Look here..we all know that DL take a couple years to develop. We’ve been hearing that since we drafted Dorsey..but we pull Berry and McClain..these guys should have immediate impacts on the D, but of course, they WILL make rookie mistakes. When these guys have 1 or 2 seasons under their belt, Dorsey and Jackson will be heading into 4th/5th season and entering their prime. That, combined with a NT..man I cant wait to see what this defense turns into. As long as these guys live up to what we expect from them..this defense is going to be GOOD. Now not only would we have a good DL, and good players in the 2nd and 3rd level, but the DL would hopefully leave Hali 1 on 1.
Does anybody have any insight on Kirk Morrison? Is he worth throwing a 3rd rounder at? I mean if we picked up Morrision, traded DJ, we could also go Berry, Iupati in the draft..
Just throwing ideas out there.
But please..stop with this BS about “Pioli failed” and all of that garbage. The Chiefs are in a much better position now than when FA started last year and just because we havent landed any big names doesnt mean we arent going to improve.
by Petey14 on Mar 6, 2010 4:15 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
Last year
we signed a bunch of back-ups, and players who may have been good at 1 time, but not so much anymore.
We HIT on O’Callaghan. O’Call is going to be fine at RT. I would be THRILLED if we picked up 20 FA’s and only 1 or 2 of them turned out to be solid starters. Look at it this way..we had Damion McIntosh or Barry Richardson..neither were good at RT. We brought in a guy who was thought to be a stop-gap and turned into a solid starter, which gives us ONE LESS NEED to fill. If the Chiefs go out and sign a bunch of no-name LB’s and 1 of them turns out to be a solid MLB or LOLB..id be thrilled. Or if we signed a bunch of no-name WR’s and 1 of them turns out to be a solid #2 or even a good slot receiver..I’d be thrilled.
You BUILD a team through the draft. You build AROUND the team you drafted with Free Agents.
