Freaks & Fools

It's not often I make a FanShot so gather round losers. All these fans up in arms about our activeness or lack thereof in Free Agency is absolutely ludicrous. Chill the eff out, folks. I'm even surprised to hear our name attached to players like Boldin, TJ, Walter, etc. I fully expected Pioli to build the middle and bottom parts of our roster in FA and address our needs thru the draft. Folks moaning and complaining about how cheap Hunt & Pioli are simply off base. If Hunt was a cheap ass he would have pulled a Ralph Wilson on Herm(and his staff)and let them finish out their contracts. Instead he went after the biggest FA of all in Pioli and landed the sumabitch! To top it off we started this off-season bringing in Weiss & Crennel. Clark has no problem spending money, people, he'd rather just do it where it's necessary and not make it rain like his last name is Snyder. We're far from being a Super Bowl contending team and just because we now have a high profile coaching staff in place everyone's acting like we're just a few pieces away.

Reality check!

It's a big league out there. Just because we're not the first one's showing up to the dance doesn't mean we have to go home empty-handed. Prom Queen's are nice trophies but come next class reunion we're all thinking differently about who we wish we would have taken home that night.

Slow your rolls until after April 24th. If our draft plays out anything like last years, then we all have something we can bitch about it.

I think its stupid to just throw money at big FA just for the sake of signing a big name FA, all you have to do is look at Pioli’s track record its not how he builds a team, he does it through the draft

I'm with you.

We shouldn’t be chasing FA prices up anymore than we should do the same when buying stocks. Stay calm and do smart things rather than with your heart in the heat of the excitement and battle.

NFL free agency last year started Feb 27, 2009 and Cassel was traded for Feb 28, 2009? Meaning not everything has to only happen on the first day?

Personally I’m glad Pioli’s taking his time. There are very few free agents I would want to give up precious draft picks for. Good point about paying Pioli Crennel andfWeis.

I guess I just think that everyone that thought we would go hog wild in FA

was living in fantasyland, because neither the Chiefs franchise or Pioli have a history of going after big FA or spending tons of money on any FA

by banshee_01 on Mar 5, 2010 7:50 PM CST reply actions

and lets be honest

the guys KC could have gone after in FA are either on the downside of their careers, don’t play with heart (Peppers), wanted mucho dinero (Rolle/Dansby), often injured, cost too much in draft picks…honestly, we’ll see how the big spenders do (Chicago) and if they don’t sniff the Super Bowl, we’ll see how long it takes for them to dig themselves out of that massive hole.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

exactly you would think all the teams would have learned from the Skins by now

that just by signing every big name FA every year doesnt guarantee you a superbowl, I mean how much have they spent the last few years and Im pretty sure they are drafting ahead of us this year are they not

by banshee_01 on Mar 5, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

I think the Bears feel they're at a tipping-point in terms of overall team talent, and must strike while the iron is hot.

If not 2010, then they’re looking at 2011 and 2012 make-overs.

Personally, I feel they committed themselves more or less irrevocably to short-term success when they made the Cutler deal, which has “team in a hurry” stamped all over it. Ironically, they brought the cannon-armed kid in, but gave him no targets. Anybody anticipate a run on WRs by the Bears this go-round?

by hmills110 on Mar 14, 2010 3:21 AM CST up reply actions

This is all out of context

I don’t think anyone expected us to go “hog wild” but damn, can we at least sign our own fucking players? I’m not going to sit here and believe that we are better off without Chris Chambers and Wade Smith just because you tell me we are. Same goes for guys like Chester Taylor and Thomas Jones, Walter etc.

This team needs a shitload of help and we are not going to get the kind of help to turn this team around solely out of the draft. You can justify it all you want but, there’s a reason why teams like the Ravens and Patriots constantly have a good team. It’s because they aren’t too cheap to make a play for a player who can help them.

It’s not just a coincidence that we have the lowest payroll in the league. It’s because the Chiefs are cheap. Plain and simple. I’m not saying we should go after every big name player throwing truckloads of money at them but damn, to not even attempt to sign good players from our own team tells me all I need to know and verifies that what I am saying is exactly right.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 5, 2010 8:25 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

theres another side to that they have to want to come here

I wanted Boldin too but lets be honest the Ravens have a better chance at the playoffs next year then we do. If we would have signed Boldin and spent $40 million on him do you really think he would have led us to the playoffs next year? I think that had alot to do with where these FA wanted to go, just because you throw cash at them doesnt mean they will come here unless you throw a hell of alot more then they are worth, then thats just stupid and not smart business, and we can still sign Chambers and Smith just because they are testing FA market doesnt mean they are gone, and Taylor Im thinking he had his mind made for Chicago before FA even started

by banshee_01 on Mar 5, 2010 8:39 PM CST up reply actions

Boldin's an asset to any playoff-bound team, but likely a T.O. kind of liability if you can't give your QB consistently good looks.

Boldin wants to WIN and will be PISSED if he’s open (or THINKS he’s open) and the OL and QB can’t put it together and get him the ball.

Looking at Pioli’s approach, I get this “rising tide raises all boats” feeling. And I kinda like it.

what superstar FA's

have the Patriots gone after since their SB runs? people keep using NE as an example, but that team is a team built out of the draft or trades. what FA’s have they brought in to push them over the top since they were 16-0? letting Chambers gauge his own value isn’t a bad thing, especially if he was looking for big dollars.

and what FA’s have the Ravens brought in (not mentioning the trade for Boldin)? they let Bart Scott walk, they survived…Adelius Thomas, once again, they survived.

the things those teams have that KC has, a strong, intelligent front office.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

Moss was in on the 16-0 season, also.

Besides, NE thought they were pretty well-built, and the dominant WR is the crown jewel for a well-built team. Unfortunately for NE, their OL started fading down the ‘07 stretch and surrendered the health of Brady to the safety blitz by the league’s worst pass-rushing team (KC) in Game 1 of ‘08. I don’t think they left OL unaddressed, but had less-than-good luck.

But I’m talking about a team that JUST missed the playoffs with a 10-6 season in ‘09. It’s not like they sucked.

by hmills110 on Mar 14, 2010 3:30 AM CST up reply actions

Rodney Harrison and Vrabel come to mind.

Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Corey Dillon were RFA trades.

It’s seems that it’s a matter of either you want to blindly trust the current leadership of the Chiefs, or you are an anxious fan who is tired of losing and want to take drastic measures. I for one, fall somewhere in the middle. Could we do more? Yes. Is free agency over? No. Did we do some good things in last years free agency? Yes, Corey Mays, Studebaker, Cassel and Vrabel come to mind. I know that Cassel and Vrabel were trades, but it was the free agency period that was the catalyst for those trades. I don’t think that we need to go around calling out eachother for feeling one way or the other. Let’s take a deep breath and wait until the 2010 team takes the field before we asess this offseason.

it's just the exact same syndrome from all of last season

When Pioli and Haley got hired everyone thought the Chiefs would suddenly pull a Miami Dolphins last to first instant turnaround and thought we would win 12 games or something and then spent all year bitching about how shitty, stupid, horrible, arrogant, etc. Pioli/Haley were. When in reality it was just a bunch of people that had stupidly, wildly unrealistic expectations and therefore were, of course, disappointed.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 6, 2010 1:36 AM CST up reply actions

I think Haley was as disappointed or MORE disappointed by some of the games that went against the Chiefs.

I expected a smart org to get KC into the 6-10 to 10-6 range, and I think the organization expected that much from themselves.

I was disappointed, myself, at a couple of those losses, when I saw the BETTER players (Waters and Albert) seem to mail it in at potentially game-turning moments, and came in to AP discouraged and questioning whether or not Haley had his big men on HIS side. But I can honestly say that the hiring of a couple of fatties like Weis and Crennel definitely puts a widebody stamp on this team. Crennel’s DL background, especially, and the rapid promotion of former player Anthony Pleasant, tells me they’re getting it right.

Anyway, I think that Haley started to win over the big men as the season wore on, and they found themselves feeling better and stronger than they’d ever felt before by game 12 or 13. I had the sense, myself, that the KC teams of the future will get more and more dangerous, because of their depth and the way they train, and the initially annoying way that Haley’s crew monitor their weight and conditioning, and the things they ask of their big men in the offseason. That shit ain’t fun, but it leaves you wanting to go fishing in the Bahamas in February, rather than going under the knife for that partially torn ligament or little piece of cartilage that cropped up in December.

I have to say that Ryan TOTALLY appears to GET IT.

It’s like he understands everything his daddy did, PLUS a few things his daddy didn’t. This year, we’ll see what gets done at WR and how much he’s willing to throw the dice with Sanchez in the passing game. If he gets THAT and the Jets offense achieves a truly balanced attack, then he’s truly the complete coach.

I look for the Jets to try to add somebody to step in behind Jenkins – something that showed up any time Jenkins couldn’t take the field. And I expect they’ll be a perennial LB mill, able to develop their own guys from the 3rd and 4th rounds. To my eye, they built RIGHT, and run defense RIGHT. Hated their Martyball offense, but it’s what they had to do to protect their rookie QB.

by hmills110 on Mar 14, 2010 3:51 AM CST up reply actions

I dunno. I hate to be a pessimist, but its kind of nice to nail the Prom Queen and the runner up. Not saying that I wanted Peppers or Taylor, but Bolden and Jones would have been nice . And Pioli and company must have thought so or they wouldn’t have been in a bidding war with Baltimore. It would be nice to be able to have some talent to be able to build around. Pioli better draft his ass off cause his free agency formula didn’t work last year. And we might not be Super Bowl bound at this moment, but it would be nice to be relevant again. It takes a combination of draft and free agency to build a dynasty.

Who’s to say those picks are made there. I’m not a fan of it but who’s not to say Pioli drafts Okung or Bulaga and move Albert to left guard and waters to right and draft Pouncey in the Second? There are a lot of ways to build a team. I’m not giving up on Pioli yet, but if things go like they did last year. I cannot support that. I’ll right it off as a lost year again.

by KC Tat Guy on Mar 5, 2010 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

and who's to say

that signing big time free agents would work, too? Washington does it every year, and they’re picking before KC. Chicago sold the farm to get a stud player who then threw for a ton of interceptions and in turn mortgaged their future and now have to go after big time, overpriced, and honestly, older, free agents.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

This is all true. And thats why I’m not blowing a gasket. Kind of goes back to my original thought as far as we went after Bolden and lost. So obviously he was on our radar. by KC Tat Guy on Mar 5, 2010 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

I know

maybe Pioli gives up all of our draft picks this year and next to the Colts for Manning, then signs him to a 4 year $600 million deal, then signs T.O. to a 3 year $400 million deal and L.T. to a 3 year $300 million deal, would that make everyone here stop bitching and moaning that we are cheap, and guess what we still probably wouldnt be in the playoffs next year then everyone would be moaing about Pioli just throwing away money signing all these big names to big contracts

A couple things

First, thanks Shuffle. You and I have been on different sides on a number of topics but I am 110% with you on this one.

This may be taboo to talk about but I just finished my big money league fantasy baseball auction. Every year the auction starts out with people going bananas for guys like A-Rod and Pujols. Some of these teams will get 2-3 “superstars” at $35-50 and then their broke and have to fill the rest of their 23 man roster with leftovers. I on the other hand let these top players go and fill my roster with less flashy dependable $15-20 players from top to bottom and almost always finish in the money over the teams with the big names. That’s what Pioli is doing. He’s clearly looking into players, he’s just not willing to break the bank. That’s not being cheap it’s spending smart. If anyone thinks we’re going to go into camp with the same players we ended the season with and only add our draft picks, you’re crazy. Think about how much he churned the roster during the season last year. Give the man some time and listen to Shuffle when he says “Chill the eff out”.

I'm still sticking by my original thought

4 new starters = good
5 new starters = great
6 new starters = f’ing awesome

Lets not forget, that a CBA deal will be in place after this season. And there will be the largest FA pool ever next year. Let’s keep our draft picks. Make the unsexy draft picks by buliding the O line and front 7 of the defense with quality starters we can find in the draft this year. Make a couple moves at some point in FA. Guys jumping ship because we didnt trade 2 important draft picks in the deepest draft in history doesnt make sense. There is no quick fix.

We want to complain that the same thing happened last year. We won 4 games last year, not good, but it WAS an improvement with no major moves, besides Cassel. Now with Crennel and Weis we can only get better. Lets give these guys a little more credit than saying their terrible after one day of FA in their 1st full year of an offseason.

by swichief on Mar 6, 2010 12:43 PM CST reply actions

I think the mindset this front office/coaching staff has is a good one

Pioli will do the things he needs to do to get players into KC. He’ll draft the players that will fit with what we are doing and is confident in the ability of our coaches to make them the best. Imagine drafting a player in the first or second round, paying him a decent amount of money for his services. Of course the will and determination of the player will directly affect his success or failure, however if he does not have great coaching he will not become the best. Now imagine drafting a player in later rounds for much cheaper. He, like the other player must have the will and determination to succeed but is coached by a great teacher. That is using value and trusting your staff to get the best out of each player.
If Pioli belives he can find these players for this team, which I think he can, he can put them in great hands with our coaching staff who has proven to develop players effectively in the NFL. I believe he is doing the right thing and I am 100% on board with this front office/coaching staff. I believe we will be one of the best franchises that’s in the playoffs year in and year out very soon. It’s all about finding the players that will develop and respond to the type of coaching here in KC, and building a Championship cabliber team every year.

Somewhat tongue in cheek but IF the coaches can make a fifth rounder worth more lets get more mid round picks to coach up.

Somewhere the talent has a place in most drafts maybe 1st and halfway through the 2nd.
Maybe this year we could extend that to mid 3rd round

Said it once and I’ll say it again, Free Agents are great and all, but franchise players are built, not bought. If any of these guys were ‘the Answer’ for their former teams, they would never have been FA’s in the first place.

Nice. This is copy pasted from another thread, because I think it fits well here:

I think Pioli is playing it his way.
We got Jones and Chambers for relatively cheap considering this is an uncapped year.

I wouldn’t doubt that the players he’s making offers to go something like this:

"The Kansas city Chiefs are not attempting to buy a championship. This team is in the process of building, not buying a team. We want the team to come before individual players, and as of now are not going overboard with huge contracts. Not that your services won’t be adequately compensated for mind you. We believe that this"… hands player an offer sheet…. "is a reasonable offer. We are in the process of building a foundation, and we will not forfeit our future for the sake of one player. We look forward to you playing for us, if you accept our offer. We are committed to excellence through players that love to play football and coaches that want to win. You have the chance to take part in something special here."

I bet Thomas Jones heard something like this and was ready to sign.

Pioli isn’t going to break the bank for anyone now, not with young, developing guys like Flowers, Charles, Hali and Dorsey approaching second contracts. The more that these guys develop and produce, the more it’s going to cost to keep them Chiefs in the future. Overpaying free agents now is likely to hurt us in the long run. I know the argument of "front-loading" a contract for this year is the way to go, but I’m not sure that grossly overpaying older vets while younger guys that have been toughing it out on this team for 2-3 years with lower salaries get looked over (Charles, Page, Flowers, etc) is a smart move, or sends the desired "team first" message.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

Pats fans here and we have fans freaking out as well.

You guys picked up some good coordinators, and probably grabbed some role player FA’s. That’s the pattern. Maybe you re-signed some bargain role players or key players. That’s part of the process.

Next you have the draft / draft day trades, followed shortly by UFA aquisitions. Check, the plan is right on schedule.

Then there are the draft casualties the #3 guy on the team that gets dumped into free agency. You’ll kick the tires on some of those guys and find that their #3 guy is better than your #2. Good progress.

That process continues through OTA’s and training camp as guys are cut and guys get hurt until you eventually you gel on the 53 that make the regular season roster. Rome wasn’t built in a day; neither is a good team.

I figured you guys were a three year turn-around when this started. You might be able to make it in two if you can get an O-line going this year.

Good luck and trust in Pioli.
