could this free agency be going any worse for us?

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Overpay?

For an aging WR that can CATCH? Guess we can just keep not forking out money to a WR that has proven himself, and maybe we will get better…

by dahd11 on Mar 5, 2010 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

Here's how I'm making myself feel better

Pioli is smart right?
So Pioli knows that many of the potential UFA’s that are RFA’s this year, will be UFA’s next year if a contract gets done between the league and the union.
Given that we probably wouldn’t be that great in 2010 even if we got a bunch of so-so to good FA’s anyway.
Pioli is being the smart guy that he is and keeping his powder dry for next year and keeping as many draft picks as possible this year.

Anyone else feel better? Neither do I.

by just a guy on Mar 5, 2010 5:32 PM CST reply actions

I'm not that concerned

Sure, he’s a great player and would’ve been an upgrade, but only for 3 years at the most. I’d rather keep any high draft picks we have and infuse more youth to areas of need, which will hopefully set us up in a position to have impact players around for the next 8+ years rather than 3.

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

by kc_radrh8r on Mar 5, 2010 5:33 PM CST reply actions

Disagree

because once they prove themselves, they’re all out to get better contracts. There is no loyalty anymore. It is very rare for a player to stick with a team longer than 4 years. That is, unless it is an uncapped year and other rules apply.

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

by kcchiefsfan72 on Mar 5, 2010 6:15 PM CST up reply actions

Pick Value?

Not sure, but I would guess that our 3rd round pick and Arizona’s 5th (they gave up with Boldin) is about the same value as Baltimore’s 3rd and 4th. Let’s go get Kevin Walter resign Chambers.

by Chief Arrowhead on Mar 5, 2010 5:34 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, i just wrote on another thread

The Ravens actually gave up less than our 3rd round pick is worth, according to the trade value chart.

Our pick is worth 250 points, their 3rd and 4th combined is worth 204. That doesn’t even count the 5th they got back.

My guess is, Boldin wanted to sign in Balt, or Balt was willing to pay more $$ to get him. I think it was about the contract, personally. I hope it’s that he didn’t want to come here, and not that we weren’t willing to pay…b/c that would really piss me off.

by kcsno56 on Mar 5, 2010 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

I just read

Baltimore is giving up a 2010 3rd round pick, 2010 4th round pick, and 2011 5th round pick for Boldin…if true, I’d much rather keep the draft picks.

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

by kc_radrh8r on Mar 5, 2010 5:36 PM CST reply actions

Not happy about losing Boldin.

I’m sure we were close. I don’t think it was the money. Pioli is stingy with his draft picks. Probably a good idea with the available talent pool in this years draft.

Scott Pioli's star will shine in 2010.
Win or lose, the Chiefs scare the bejesus of all opponents in 2010

by ChiefsChance on Mar 5, 2010 5:38 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Besides Baltimore overpaying

Did Boldin ever really make THAT much sense for us?

We have Bowe, who is a possession WR type insofar as he is not particularly fast, stretch the field type. It seems we’d wanna paiur him with a speedy type that can stretch the field (Chambers, Tate, etc).

For justice we must go to Don Pioli

by Sudden on Mar 5, 2010 5:39 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, I’m hoping a strong draft will help us forget about all this nonsense…

by Bims on Mar 5, 2010 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

I’d rather keep the picks (a 3rd AND a 4th seems like too much to me). Plus like you said he doesn’t really stretch the field. Not really big on his recent injury history either. Seems like a IR stint waiting to happen. Don’t overpay, make sound decisions on FAs and take your shot in the draft.

by stram#1 on Mar 5, 2010 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

3rd and 4th

I would be willing to put a lot of money on whoever we draft in those two spots will not make any significant contribution to this team EVER!

by dahd11 on Mar 5, 2010 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

i'd take that bet

true they might not be impact players, but you can find solid to very good back ups in 3-4. and considering our absolute lack of depth that’s a significant contribution to the team

Seriously mates, when have I ever been sarcastic?

Oh and in case you were wondering, that hug offer is still there when you are ready UC :p

by Leaf on Mar 5, 2010 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

Like I said...

Significant contribution. Not just contribution. I agree depth is good, but we need firepower.

by dahd11 on Mar 6, 2010 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

i disagree again

a team can not win on starters alone. if you don’t have solid back ups you’ll never win the super bowl. players get hurt, suspended, tiered, whatever all the time. if you don’t have a solid back up to take his place then that is a major hole that has been created. i’d say preventing major holes on the team from showing is a pretty big contribution.

People act like free agency is Christmas Day. Its hard to sit back and watch other teams snap up the big names, but losing out on Boldin isn’t a killer. There are way too many holes to throw all the money at the sexy names.

They could toss money around aimlessly

like the Redskins did before Shanahan came to town. By now they would have already signed Peppers and Vanden Bosch and traded for Boldin. They finally figured out the way to build a team.

by stram#1 on Mar 5, 2010 6:15 PM CST up reply actions

thanks guys

I understand the frustration that a lot of fans are feeling but I’d rather have a GM that is smart with the team’s money than someone that just goes out and recklessly spends.. And also, we are still in the first full day of free agency.. There are other quality players out there that we can still get that might not have as big of names as some of these guys getting scooped up, but they also don’t come with near as big of a price tag either. Kevin Walters comes to mind.

Although I would like to add that

I was really looking forward to Sproles hitting the FA market.. He could have complemented Charles, and he would have took over KR/PR duties. Plus, he’s a local kid that fans would have loved having on our team.

by justinmayhugh on Mar 5, 2010 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

Yep.

I think one of the things I’ve learned about free agency is that GMs that spend recklessly/unnecessarily on free agents are either scared as hell about their jobs (i.e. Bears) or just stupid (i.e. Carl Peterson)

how are we not worse…coaching doesnt mean shit if you dont have good football players, crennel and weis did real well in notre dame and cleveland with bad players huh?

by CHIEFin on Mar 5, 2010 6:01 PM CST reply actions

Talent don't mean everything

You have to have the coaches the develop the talent. Tim Tebow is a great talent, but he is not a NFL player. Larry Johnson had no talent, but he made it to Pro Bowl two times and was a first round draft pick.

I wasn't saying about Pioli and Haley was the problem.

Don’t misquote me. I said “something isn’t right”; not “Pioli and Haley aren’t doing this right”.

The problem started way before Pioli and Haley came here. I was merely stating the obvious.

When a team is 10-38 in three seasons, than something isn’t right with the team.

Said nothing about Pioli and Haley being the problem.

by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 6, 2010 12:15 AM CST up reply actions

they went 4-12 then 2-14. yes something isn't right.

carl peterson resigns. herm is fired. they are trying to change things. but you have to give it time.

by worc on Mar 6, 2010 11:31 AM CST up reply actions

Okay correct me if I'm wrong, but are Leaf and you saying that I'm saying "Pioli and Haley are the problem; so they don't deserve time."

If so, reread what I wrote, because you are misreading my post.

10-38 record = Obvious problem with the Chiefs

4-12: Carl and Herm
6-26: Carl and Herm
10-38: Pioli and Haley

I’m going to post this one more time. The problem (the “something that is not right”) started way before Pioli and Haley came here.

How do you keep on getting “Pioli and Haley are the problem” out of that?

by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 6, 2010 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

i never said that.

my whole point is that yes “something isn’t right” and they are trying to change it, but the real change was where pioli and haley comes in. and thats where patience is needed.

i’m not trying to say anything or imply anything else.

The NFL is full of good players. one or two big names isnt gonna win us games. We need to just relax and be happy we still have a team and some really methodical people running it. by KEANEKONG on Mar 5, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

No big deal...Chiefs fans

Though he is a talent..there are other WRs out there that the Chiefs can run at. They need only 1 in FA (Chambers) and 1 more WR player maker on draft day. I’m still think we should draft Bryrant in the 1st and trade him for what looks like Denver’s #6 and #11. Then you go get Berry and Dan Williams in the 1st and then go get Tate and OG or ILB in the 2nd. 4 new starters on 4 picks and you just improved your team in 4 key weaknesses.

by NFL season ticket holder on Mar 6, 2010 1:08 AM CST reply actions

L White

Stay away from him. He keeps saying he wants to be a starter and do you really think he will be happy with JC (C2J Clone) getting all the touches? We need to get a big back that can pound it between the tackles and Jamal Lewis could do that for us. I know he is old but were not looking for more thn 1 year out of the guy. Find a few pieces to fill some of the holes we have to get us threw this years draft and next years. I really believe Pioli needs 3 – 4 drafts to build this team.
