Done Deal: Ravens Beat Chiefs, Acquire Boldin

The Baltimore Ravens have acquired Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Boldin, 29, was being sought by the Kansas City Chiefs and, at one point, the New England Patriots.

Here's the rundown of the deal, according to Schefter.

Done deal: Arizona trades WR Anquan Boldin and a 2010 fifth-round pick to Baltimore for Ravens 2010 third- and fourth-round picks.

Remember, Boldin is expecting a long-term contract as well so this isn't exactly the easiest trade. Judging by the terms listed above, I suspect the Chiefs were more concerned with the contract than the compensation.

Here's the history behind what just went down....

3:00 PM (CST): Report surfaces that the Chiefs, Ravens and Patriots are in the bidding for Boldin.

4:00 PM (CST): The Patriots are out of the running leaving just the Chiefs and Ravens

5:00 PM (CST): All indications are that the Ravens will be the one to acquire Boldin

Now....Ravens have Boldin and the Chiefs are moving on.

it's too bad carl peterson isn't here

shit we coulda given them a second and a third, plus no way boldin gets mad when he finds out we think his 8mil/year asking price is WAY too low.. we coulda given him 10-12 easy

by wd123 on Mar 5, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Yep. Carl would have signed the “name”, overpaid in draft choices, and a year later, when Boldin is done due to more injuries, all the fans that wanted him and applauded the move, would be mad. Pioli would not overpay for him and should be applauded.

Guess I Agree With Kray...

you want to get better, Pioli? Make a fucking move and put your balls on the table. Chiefs Nation deserves better than mediocre trash that other teams do not want. I reiterate what others have said, we’ve got the fucking money, SPEND IT!!! Boldin would have immediately increased productivity on the offensive side of the football. If I’m Cassel, I’m in Pioli’s ass barking about him displaying a major case of douche-baggery..

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

We showed our hand. OBVIOUSLY now everyone knows we are hot and heavy for receivers. It was a bad poker hand. If your going to play the game this late into the bidding, you WIN. You get it done. For the record...

The Ravens actually gave up less than our 3rd round pick is worth, according to the trade value chart.

Our pick is worth 250 points, their 3rd and 4th combined is worth 204. That doesn’t even count the 5th they got back.

My guess is, Boldin wanted to sign in Balt, or Balt was willing to pay more $$ to get him. I think it was about the contract, personally. I hope it’s that he didn’t want to come here, and not that we weren’t willing to pay…b/c that would really piss me off.

how many big name FA did Pioli sign every year when he won 3 superbowls in 4 years, none that I can remember. The guy knows what he is doing how about we give him time to do it, if you wanna bail now because we didnt waste a ton of money on a big name player then go ahead. If all you want is an owner and GM who just throw tons of money at big name FA and dont worry about building a team that has chemistry and a chance to win the superbowl then become a Redskins fan. if the reason Pioli didn’t lay it all out on the table for Boldin was because he wants to ensure we sign Chambers, then I’m okay with that. His next move had better be putting CC’s name in ink….

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

by kcchiefsfan72 on Mar 5, 2010 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

huh?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Chris Chambers. But he is not going to win you ball games. He has been an underachiever his entire career. Im afraid that we have just been so crappy at WR over the past years that we get excited when someone doesnt drop the ball.

How are we better offensively with Bowe and Chambers this year than we were with Bowe and Chambers last year?

by WyoChief on Mar 5, 2010 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

Not Better...

but it is apparent he is not going to sign anybody else. So we may as well keep the “good” ones that we do have. Besides, I thought Chambers stepped in and did an exceptional job last year. Well, besides the one drop at the 3-yard line.

fair enough

Im just so sick and tired of getting excited about guys that no other teams want. Eventually, we have to begin to wonder – are we right in wanting other’s trash or is the rest of the league right in dumping the trash and our talent evaluators have all lost their mind.

Im seriously going to lose my mind if I have to watch another year of “improvement”. 6-10 here we come.

by WyoChief on Mar 5, 2010 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

Was this year and a 6-10 year next year not better than we were heading under herm? it takes time to rebuild a team that was ignored for so long… Boldin probably will make an impact for what 4 years? probably at least 2 of which we still would be near 8-8

by karkz86 on Mar 5, 2010 6:22 PM CST up reply actions

agree

Look, I know Herm left the cupboard half (or about 1/10th) full. Seriously, though I cant remember one decent FA we have signed in years (Cassell excluded.) Our last draft consisted of reaching tremendously for Jackson, grabbing a back up DE in the 3rd, picking up a bunch of crap in the middle and getting a kicker. Oh, and the kicker was the best of the bunch.

Then for FA we signed a whole bunch of old white guys. Then we picked up the patriots reject at right tackle. Then we traded for those two crappy linemen from Miami.

Other teams go from losing records to the playoffs. We seem to be happy with improving one win at a time.

by WyoChief on Mar 5, 2010 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Ya but how many of them stay in the playoffs? And this isn’t just Herm. Dick did the same…. Most teams get new coach start a rebuild us nope we kept going like everything was fine. I agree this hasn’t been great or maybe like I hoped but I’m not going to break down heck we are slowly on the rise I’d rather be going this way slowly then continuing to go down

by karkz86 on Mar 5, 2010 6:33 PM CST up reply actions

Weis and Crennel are not young pups....

They are not here to raise rookies….they are here to win. So far we have not shown that we are serious about winning…Now.

Our team is way too young….we need some good veteran players…pronto.

Barring some complete disaster

They’ll be here for at least 2 or 3 yrs and more than that is the Chiefs show improvement the next few years.

by alakan81 on Mar 5, 2010 6:07 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Yes because I’m sure Pioli said hey guys when you guys sign on with us we will sell our future to try and win a few extra games to please those fans who’s life clearly depends on us making moves in early March last thing we need is them to admit themselves into the hospital. So don’t worry I wont expect you to do any helping worry about any young guys because frankly we are only going to get the all pros

by karkz86 on Mar 5, 2010 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

We seriously needs some playmakers

Difference makers!
Game changers!

We can’t seriously expect our coaching staff to improve these crap sacks in Chiefs uniforms we trotted out last year.

by alakan81 on Mar 5, 2010 6:55 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Anyone ever think

that maybe we are trying to build a winner?

Pittsburgh=Great team on downslide w/ Cowher

Built through draft, won super bowl…twice.

Arizona=Sad sack team for decades.

Hire a coordinator, from pittsburgh, BUILT THROUGH THE DRAFT!

made super bowl.

Kansas City=Rough patch since Vermiel left

hired coordinator from arizona, BUILDING THROUGH THE DRAFT!!!!

We got Dorsey, Albert, Cassel, Jackson, Bowe, Charles, Flowers, Page

Peices are there, now the final peices along the offensive and defensive lines, and then finish with the complimentary parts, the change-up power back, the #2 WR, a slot reciever

THE CHIEFS ARE DEFINETLY CLOSER THAN WE THINK!…..I hope.

I applaud your optimism

Its just very frustrating always watching other teams sign guys that we could use and want to have.

Im sure im not the only one who was counting on Pioli to start upgrading our team in a quicker fashion.

It also seems like we are not doing anything although we have so many holes and so many positions in need of an upgrade….

well said!dont

We can’t expect too many huge names…

But, kevin walter and thomas jones would be a great haul, still.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

by stagdsp on Mar 5, 2010 6:14 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I retain the optimism for now...

this reaction is what i would have expected from our fanbase had this been draft day, and not the first day of free agency…

I definetly like how the first day of NFL free agency has evolved into the leagues “Signing Day”…pretty exciting.

However, if draft day is a disaster, then this type of reaction from KC fans will be justified, and i will be right there with you all.

by mizzou60 on Mar 5, 2010 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

oh come on

when is the last time the Chiefs have won a playoff game? There is a fine line between slowly building for the future and foregoing immediate gain for future results. The Chiefs are mired in mediocrity. No, actually being mediocre sounds really good compared to the last three years.

by WyoChief on Mar 5, 2010 6:16 PM CST reply actions

which means

now he can be traded

$25 million guaranteed, $18 million signing bonus

On a sports talk show today they said KC is at about $43 million current roster salary
and the cap last year was about $110 million

Is it that bad ?

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

Clifton

re-signed with the packers. This means Washington will probably still take Okung

by RamX21 on Mar 5, 2010 6:36 PM CST reply actions

I think Okung is going to be gone before us anyways with the Lions getting Williams they may not go with one of the stud tackles although a tough trade down may be in mind

by karkz86 on Mar 5, 2010 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

Any way it happens

It’s looking more and more like Berry will be in Red & Gold this year

by RamX21 on Mar 5, 2010 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

Could be maybe Bulaga wouldn’t shock me if Scott grabbed him and caused AP to exploded with choas. Or maybe a NT option if he feels ones rated well enough

I'm starting to worry...

that no one wants to be a Chief. Is Pioli gonna swing and miss this year?

by KCMizzou on Mar 5, 2010 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Not necessarily.

The second-tier free agents usually make or brake a free agency class. It just be nice to sign a top-tier free agent for once. Hoping Thomas Jones bites.

by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 5, 2010 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

With Our Lack Of Commitment

to bringing in any top tier names or showing we are gonna do something, why as a FA would you want to come here…. that’s my concern on how were blowing it…

by JimDog on Mar 5, 2010 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

This is really disappointing

My FA hopes for our offense just tanked. Hard finding positives to say about us when every offseason is one abysmal let down after another. How does a team improve when they don’t try to make the additions neccassary? Looking out for T jones but I’m not holding my breath.

by shotty on Mar 5, 2010 7:43 PM CST reply actions

My take on it is...

that it is tougher to fill seats with out a flashy name or two. Think about it. What was the last big name Chiefs jersey you wanted to run out to the store and buy and wear around for everyone to see? Dorsey? Cassel? Maybe? Bowe….ugg. Jackson….blaaahh. Charles now, after a half of a good year. I bet most teams outside of the Chiefs fan base couldn’t name more than three good Chiefs. God. Hard to be excited about a team full of average joes…

by iachiefsfan on Mar 5, 2010 7:51 PM CST reply actions

when the Pats won their first SB, after a 5-11 season

what players outside of Drew Bledsoe and MAYBE Lawyer Milloy could you name? they were a TEAM of average joes who came together and weren’t flashy on either side of the ball. they were solid, well coached, and well managed.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

Ok

you got me on that. But do you actually think we can be competetive with the guys we have now? I remember getting absolutely demolished several times this year….one that comes to mind is the first game against San Diego. Could any amount of good coaching change that train wreck around? Holy shit. We were out of it after the first five minutes. It was on regular tv and they went to another game after the start of the third qtr.

by iachiefsfan on Mar 5, 2010 8:12 PM CST reply actions

Now?

i don’t know…we’ll never see that. the team we have now won’t be the team we’ll see come August. we’ll see some of the guys we have now with the guys picked up in the draft, along with a few second-tier free, agent signings. i believe the coaching has improved ten fold and that in of itself will be a MAJOR improvement.

the superstars that came out of New England weren’t superstars when they got there. they were coached into a team and then became superstars. as a fan, i hope for a well balanced team before i start to worry about big names.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

You are the man

thanks for bitch slapping me back into reality. I can see it now. Mark it. I call 6 wins this year. I will toast to that. IF we can get two more wins each year…it will take 3-4 years to make the playoffs. That actually makes it sound a little more tolerable.

by iachiefsfan on Mar 5, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

i would say two years

but it all hangs on this draft…and unfortunately, i have a feeling AP will have another meltdown after the draft, for no reason except people aren’t getting the names they’re smitten with.

my off-season was made with Charlie and Romeo. everything else would be icing on the cake.

by bansky on Mar 5, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

Hunt said he wanted to build through the draft.

Maybe Hunt had more say on this than anyone thinks.

by Helmets on Mar 5, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

that's how you build ... thru the draft, not FA

stay with youth, get the guys you want to fill the holes you have … then KEEP getting young, fresh, new players to KEEP those roster spots frombecoming holes all over again

for those of you who love to bash the dearly departed Herm Edwards, he knew what to do when he got here (scrap the again team and start over) … he wasn’t able to START that until 2008 … Pioli and Haley had no idea who or what they had when they got here, so they started all over again, too (sad but true: last year was for purposes of evaluation, not playing “competitive football”)

this year, the draft will be SUPER important to our team … and I honestly think we could end up with 4 starters from this draft, not to mention a couple of backups) … it WILL take time, but it WILL happen …

1) fix OLine holes
2) fix DLine and LB holes
3) WR
4) Secondary

mix well, allow to gel … voila … Team Chiefs will be tasty if Chef Pioli garners the right ingredients and allows his specialty chefs (Weis and Crennel) to work their magic

so relax, sit back and enjoy … draft day 2010 is going to be very, very interesting

Yea i agree, this is a load of crap! Is Pioli on Vacation or what? ? He told us he would use that 2nd round pick to replace gonzalez, he needs to grow a pair and do it! Boldin was ours to lose! Im sick of not having a big name signing since joe montana and marcus allen 15 freaking years ago!! We dont want average joes, we want 1 or 2 stars in free agency, we have plenty of money we have sold out every game for 20 years and we havent spent any money in 15 years!
