Another offseason, same story?

Pioli, it's time to do something. It's a little discouraging that we haven't jumped in the mix for any players this quick. I know many of you will think I'm being pretty harsh but this team needs dramatic changes, and quickly before alot of the names are off the table. I do think we are heading in the right direction and I loved the hirings of Crennel and Weis. But we need to get out there and start getting some more players. A couple big name players would be nice. I know that this is still totally in the realm of possibility being that were not even into the FA for 24 hours. All I'm saying is, Please Pioli make it happen this offseason. Last offseason wasn't that impressive, or maybe it just hasn't paid off yet. But the #1 pick for us last year is a non-factor and not a game changer. We need players who are game changers. Please make it happen.

ummm looking at the front page it looks like we're looking at SEVERAL quality players..

I cant see how we could be going after anyone else right now. Besides, there’s always that draft day hail mary we are all hoping for…. PLEASE lets not start a mock posting here….. my eyes glaze over and I zone and this is the best part of the off season watching who moves where

I'm just a pilgram in an unholy land (ugh, does it have to be skin nation though?)

I just wish

That pseudo-descriptive terms like “game changer” and “play maker” could just be stricken from the football lexicon.

I’m pretty sure if that happened, I’d be so happy I’d poop a rainbow.

by alakan81 on Mar 5, 2010 3:37 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Haha why's that?

That’s what some players are. There’s your average quality player, then there’s your stand out players. Standout, is that better? haha

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Something much less vague

But, really, the main problem I have with it is that its use often overstates the necessity of individual importance and thus understates the importance of “team football”.

Ex: “Bernard Pollard is a play maker!!1”

The problem this statement is that, while it is true that Pollard creates turnovers and makes big hits, he also gets beaten over the top more than any other player at his position. This is because even though he has great talent, for some reason he can’t or won’t stay where he’s supposed to be. And in fact, can’t even find a balance between the two extremes.

For me, it just smacks of the notion that football is only what we can clearly see, when in reality a large chunk of good football is what you don’t see and what didn’t happen because someone away from the ball was doing what they were supposed to. Football is a “we”, not a “me”.

Stop freaking out people.

Overpaying for big names IS NOT THE ANSWER. Boldin won’t put us in the Super Bowl. Peppers wasn’t going to make us a play off team.

Look at the Redskins’ previous free agency periods. What did Haynesworth do for them last year?

Not saying that we won’t get a free agent here or there, but even if we didn’t, I still wouldn’t care that much. Losing teams that overspend in free agency continue to be losing teams for a reason. We should be more interested in getting quality guys at bargain prices.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

Big name players dont make ppl playoff teams?

Hmmmm…..Ok. Your telling me that if we still had Jared Allen (a big name, game changing player) we couldn’t have gotten more out our defense and possibly been a playoff team the last couple years? Big name players who make plays, open up the field for the average guys to make plays. So please don’t tell me that they don’t matter. Haynesworth and other great players’ situations happen every now and then. Sure, everytime you go after and get those big players you don’t always get what you’ve hoped but it damn sure does increase the chances in your team winning more games.

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

Allen probably wouldnt of helped out much last year in the 3-4...

Its about the right players not the big name players.. Im not saying some big names wont help but they dont all work out. Heck some of them get their payday and dissapear..

I totally agree with the big pay day, no show. But we need a couple big players here and there man. It’s all about the player and his work ethic. Teams know through the league who the true team players are.

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Did the Falcons make the playoffs because they traded for Tony G? Did the Raiders make the playoffs with Seymour? Did the Redskins with Haynesworth? How about the Bears getting Cutler?

Trying to get big name players doesn’t guarantee you anything. My point is that most of the team needs to be built and assembled correctly, AND THEN you sign the one or two big name/money free agents that propel you to that next level. The evidence is all over the NFL. Focusing on building a team through the free agency almost always fails utterly.

Allen

was with the team when we went to playoffs during Herm’s tenure (which was a pure luck that we were even there, i.e. the five million things that had to happen and did). We were definitely not a playoff worthy team that year, and I can’t recall Allen being a gamechanger in that game. In fact all I remember is the colts running us over like a steamroller. The reason he’s been such a playmaker in Minnesota has alot to do with the talent surrounding him (if you noticed his stats have improved since leaving KC)

You're picking a single game? Really?

Allen got that big contract in Minnesota because of his play in KC, so his production wasn’t all about having the Williams twins inside.

However, even though Allen got his stats here, the Chiefs did not have a particularly daunting defense with him there. One DE does not a defensive core make. The Chiefs’ defense needs sure tacklers more than anything at the LB and DB positions to go along with an effective NT. While you might add one of these through FA, you aren’t going to fill all of these holes. This year, due to the CBA implications of the uncapped year, means that you are looking primarily at unproductive young players or productive old players in FA. This team is not close enough to SB contention to gamble on too many productive old players, as they probably will be too old to be productive by the time we are ready to contend.

so you would rather settle for a bunch of bums like toomer, engram, zach thomas..get real we need real talent. we can get all the coaches we want but until we get some serious talent we will go nowhere

by dwill_pittst on Mar 5, 2010 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

No,

But getting a man-crush on EVERY big name that pops up in free agency isn’t going to get us anywhere, and that’s where a lot of the reason for people freaking out right now comes from. “Look! CHI got Peppers, quick do something Pioli!!!!!”. Or “OMG!!! Dansby is going to Miami? Why didn’t we look into him!!!”

As the dust settles we’ll start to see some of the bargain guys start moving around. That’s going to be our playing field.

dwill is right

bargain players aren’t going to get it done for us man. That’s what we did last year and what’d that do for us? 2 more wins, a total of 4. Our playing field is whatever we want it to be my man. Clark has the money, all he has to do is open up his pocketbook for ’em.

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn't mean they'd be a good fit

Peppers is a big name yes, but there’s no guarantee he’d work in a 3-4. Dansby wouldn’t be terrible, but maybe they don’t think he fits their scheme. Chester Taylor would’ve been nice, but if a guy signs with the first team he visits, there’s not much you can do.

by bh13 on Mar 5, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

I know. I get that the money is there.

Stop. Let’s start over. Here’s my take on this years NFL free agency:

The top 10 free agents yesterday, and I’ll put some notes on them:

Julius Peppers- Signed by CHI. Probably wouldn’t have been the best fit for us any ways.
Carlos Dansby- Nothing official yet, but MIA was apparently his first choice. He would have been a great sign.
Gary Brackett- IND got him back, there never really was the chance of him shopping.
Thomas Jones- Apparently we’re interested, and may make an offer. This would be a good addition as the uppercut to our 1-2 RB punch.
Chester Taylor- Another guy we were interested in. CHI got him first though. May not have had anything to do with cash. Taylor probably wanted to go there.
Darren Sharper- Meh. We tendered Page, who has shown some solidity. Unlikely that he’ll take an offer from us over anything that NO offers him. Plus he’s 34 years old.
Dunta Robinson- Would have been a nice addition, but CB isn’t really an area of need for us. Carr is still developing, and has been a pretty good compliment to Flowers. It makes sense to keep him for now.
Ryan Clark- No word on him yet, but I could see him as one of the “value guys” I’ve referred to.
Darren Sproles- Case closed, but apparently KC and Sproles had a meeting set up. Would have been a good addition.
Antrel Rolle- Moot point, Giants wanted him, we didn’t. Safety doesn’t seem to be an area of interest for us yet… might have something to do with the upcoming draft.

There’s the top 10 free agents from yesterday. We were targeting one group: RB. Who do you see on that list that is a must have, and would justify spending millions of dollars? I don’t see one, except for Jones. Dansby would be nice too. The rest wouldn’t really improve or help this team that much compared to what we’d spend to get them.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

by Red N Gold Beast on Mar 5, 2010 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Another note on Robinson

He’s from Georgia, so it’s possible he wasn’t interested in going anywhere else.

by bh13 on Mar 5, 2010 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you

on the Dansby, Jones and Peppers point of views

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

totally agree

its just stupid to spend big money just to get a big name player if he doesnt fit our team chemistry, I would have liked to have got Sproles but no way hes worth a 1st and 3rd and I think SD will come way down off of that because with everyone they have to try and sign I dont think they are going to want to pay $7million for Sproles this season. So I would rather keep our draft picks and draft our own players rather then have to give up multiple picks just for 1 guy

by banshee_01 on Mar 5, 2010 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

What do you care how much we pay the players?

It’s an uncapped year. If this team is going to be any good, we will have to overpay for some players just like every other team in the league has to do occasionally. We have the lowest payroll of just about every team in the league.

Is this team committed to winning at any cost or are we going to continue to be the whipping boys for every other team in the league.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 5, 2010 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

for a team who’s last 2 years compiled of 6 wins, you have to make dramatic changes in not only your coaches, but players as well.

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

No, I agree with that to a point.

But I would much rather that we be really selective and sure about our pick-ups rather than throwing money out there just because we can.

I’m just pointing out that overpaying for free agency players never ends well if your team was a bottom feeder the year before. Give one example of a bottom 10 team acquiring a big name free agent that actually helped propelled them into playoff contention.

I'm Mad

Because it seems like we aren’t going to be aggressive this year either, but on the other hand i want to keep as many picks as we can. I wanted Boldin here for 1 reason , i was hoping he would help Bowe workout some of his problem’s. Not only that but he is a great WR, even if he is up there in age. You can’t get Quality guy’s at low price’s , it just don’t happen anymore.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 5, 2010 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

KC...

…made a run at Boldin. They were the first team for Sproles to visit before he was hit with a first and third tender. KC is still linked to Thomas Jones. They’re being aggressive as a team can be without losing their minds and overpaying for players.

stupid enter key...

I don’t think Chiefs fan is saying that a single big name will turn us into a super bowl team. But we need several holes filled in, and I think if anyone expects to fill them all with draft picks, they need to open up a window and let in some fresh air. I know this is a multi-year process. But the truth is that there are, in fact, players out there that can help transform a football team. We have some money to spend…it’s not like the Hunts are losing money with the Chiefs. Instead of pocketing the cash, why not spend some on quality players? I’m not saying we should overpay a player, but it’s okay for the Chiefs to have to open up the checkbook and shell out some big bucks for someone that didn’t come from the Patriots or LSU…

I understand the desperate feeling that you have

but I would rather that we trust in the GM and coaching staff that we have assembled. Honestly, when was the last time we had anything like this going on in KC? Vermeil? No way. He was a win now at all costs coach that dessimated our team. We are now living the reality of what his decision were. If he had won the big dance the discussion would be different but that didn’t happen.

Keep your powder dry and trust in these guys. They do have the pedigree to support a bit of blind faith right now. I think that they will make solid decisions for us. All of this is even more difficult because of the lack of a CBA. If we don’t get one of those, we could see a strike or lock out next year and then where would our chances be? Now all those aging vets would be aged vets and we would have to replace and start again. Pick the developmental players with upside and get’em in the game! Keep the faith Chiefs nation. The reservation will rise again!

I disagree. Vermeil was a quick fix. The decisions made at the end of Schottenheimer era (when Peterson ran everyone out of town) and the Cunningham era are where we went wrong. Pioli

If you look at the trend the Patriots have for signing free agents while he was there you do not see big names. He mostly picked up value free agents. Most of the big names came via trade or the draft. I wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t sign any big named free agents

by mysonmylife on Mar 5, 2010 4:37 PM CST reply actions

Sadly?

Yeah, the Patriots were such a fucking failure with that personnel philosophy. They only won three Superbowls doing it that way. Maybe you’d be happier being a Redskins fan. Snyder throws money all over the place and overpays free agents all the time. Hell, Peterson did the same thing here in KC. How’s that working out for them in DC?

How many Patriots-like dynastys do you see come around ever?

Not many, so I’m not hellbent on hoping Pioli gets us a dynasty like the Pats. Yes, that’d be great, but realistically I’m just hoping for the Chiefs to win one superbowl sometime soon in my life. Anymore than 1 would be icing on the cake my man.

by ChiefsFanInTexas on Mar 5, 2010 5:02 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't expect a multi-SB team either, but ....

you need to look at the teams that have had prolonged success as an organization. Look at the Steelers, Colts, Patriots, (stupid) Broncos, and Eagles. These are teams that have managed to stay in division contention year after year for the last decade. How do these teams do it? They do it with a consistent, methodical approach to not just team building, but organization building. We haven’t had that it in KC since Marty was here. I think the Chiefs are still 2 years from playoff contention, and they will probably need another year after that to be really dangerous. We also need to see how this new CBA is going to play out. Signing a bunch of high-priced, 30-something free agents may mean we only get one year of production out of them. That could cripple us with contracts that may be difficult to get rid of if the cap is reinstituted.

I want to see us return to the powerhouse team we were in the early 90s, too; and I would love to see Chiefs SB footage that wasn’t taped when my parents were still in high school. I just don’t want to see us make a bunch of rash decisions to be mediocre for a year or two. I want to see us unseat the Broncos and Chargers as the class team in the AFC West for the next decade. That won’t happen by trying to add a bunch of quick-fix FAs.

I believe

that Pioli looks at this situation and says…a 3 and a 4 for boldin, plus 8 mil a year for 4 years…those 2 picks will make next to nothing compared to that over the same period…if they are confident in their front office/drafting…which they should be…we must find a few stars equal to boldin in this draft, one at WR….I think we will…I think we take Tate in round 2….

I also strongly believe pioli has a list, wilfork and a few other names are on it…we will see..

but with burelson getting ridiculous cash, walter about to get it from texans…I don’t blame KC for holding onto picks in a strong draft with an uncertain future financially.

Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.

Take Boldin as an example. He was essentially choosing between us and the Ravens. We got 4 wins last year and finished bottom of our division. The Ravens are a perennial playoff team.

Easy decision, no amount of money changes it.

haha

he doesn’t have to sign a new contract to be traded. He would still be ours til the end of his current contract. That’s the whole problem the raiders are dealing with with Richard Seymour. Which, btw wasn’t his choice

exactly - and he had 1 year remaining

Do you want to give up 2 draft picks to get a guy for one year?

i dont blame boldin if that's what he chose

Im not gonna have hurt feelings if a guy doesnt want to come here. Balt has a better chance of winning sooner. He got paid. Good luck sir

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

exactly, I don't blame Boldin either

I’m just saying the Chiefs would be stupid to ante up enough to convince him to come here for one year because they couldn’t convince him to sign a longer year deal. It seems like some people around here would be fine with a deal like that. 2 draft picks to get him for one year.

I'm sure he had a say in the matter

GM and Boldin chat:

GM: “so we got some teams interested, Ravens and the hehe Chiefs”
B: “rofl, if the Chiefs call tell them I’m on the can”

Can you imagine a player being sent to a team he doesn’t want to play for and spending the next year just going through the motions until he can get out? cough Randy Moss to the Raiders cough Locker room poison!

Blame my wife!
Waiting until August 2010

Look

Pioli has already said in the last month, that the Chiefs will be active in FA like they were last season, meaning next to none/no big names, and looking for valuable FA’s that can contribute…Let’s not forget that alot of FA’s that went into NE when Pioli was there, were no names. But because of coaches like Crennel and Weis, players were coached to play to the best of their ability, and consequently became “big names.” So look for players like Brandon Flowers, Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson (which btw most DE do not do do well their first season in the NFL, but by their 2nd and 3rd seasons if they have talent become powerhouse players) to be major play makers this year. What need is not to bring in someone we HOPE will be a game changer, but to make game changers out of the players we have. Yes FA’s help, but no “big name” has ever turned a franchise around by themselves. TO proved that with buffalo last year. And on top of that a HUGE factor playing in FA for us right now is the simple fact that we only one 4 games last year. Alot of the FA’s this year in the 30s or close to, which means they’re looking for a team that’s almost there, not one that’s gonna take more time than they have to get there. Look for Pioli to be patient and jump on the opportunities HE feels best fits KC. 2 cents
