Report: Chiefs, Jets Show Interest In RB Thomas Jones

The New York Jets released Thomas Jones this week due in large part to a large bonus he was due. I speculated earlier that Jones would be a good fit with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Well, it appears the Chiefs agree with me (for once), according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network.

Star-divide

Thomas Jones is drawing interest from the Chiefs, as well as the Jets, according to a league source.

After announcing his release Monday, the Jets now appear to be interested in bringing back their leading rusher for a lesser price tag.

Jones, 31, is coming off an impressive season in which he rushed for over 1,400 yards in tandem with rookie Shonn Greene.

Jones doesn't have a ton of wear on his tires considering his age but he is coming off of a season in which he had a career high in carries so that's certainly a concern.

The Chiefs have expressed interest in adding a bigger back to complement Jamaal Charles.

Jones would be a nice pickup but for no more than 3 years at a resonable price.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

Agreed

Getting Jones would not only make our offense better, but would make the draft easier.

Pioli said

we’d be “active” in FA, announced it to the whole league, and yet it doesn’t seem like we’re going anywhere. Highly doubt that Jones signs with us, Jets almost got to the SB and he’ll probably want to be there if it happens this year.

by Green-Monster on Mar 5, 2010 1:09 PM CST reply actions

Free Agency just started...

What you’re seeing right now is a land rush for the big names. We all know he feels about big names.

Plenty of time to sift through the trash and hopefully find a couple treasures.

now if Detroit has a better record than us next year

im going to be pissed, they have in one day improved their D-line and receiving corps. We could be doing the same thing while still improving in the draft, yet i feel we are holding out for the draft.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

YES!!!

I love it. GO PIOLI!!! GO PIOLI!!! Once I get back from work in a couple of hours. I expect him to be a Chief. My expectations may be reaching it a little bit though.

for Jones to be successful here

we would need to upgrade the O-line. He doesn’t have the speed Charles has to get by guys.

Blunt?

Hailey and Pioli want high character players. Blunt is not obviously!

My bold prediction for 2010....The Chiefs win the AFC west with a 9-7 record, while the Chargers fall off, Denver remains the same, and Oakland, well enough said.

Jones would be smart to come here if he was looking for playing time & $. NY’s backfield is crowded with Greene & Washington, Jones would only have to compliment JC here and I’d venture to say we could open up the bankbook a little more for him than NY could

a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

I don’t like him, and think he’s more of a cancer than anything else, but at least for what little bit of a threat he is he’ll be out of the division. Now let’s just hope McDummy blows the picks they get from it.

They wouldn't seriously give up the #6 overall for him, would they?

If they get him for a lower pick look for ’em to be drafting a QB…good news for us.

Rolle about to sign with the Giants

Shouldn’t their be a rule if you have an enormous amount of cap space you have to spend SOME of it? Damn can we sign some depth? Special teams? Chain gang?

by KCinIL on Mar 5, 2010 1:34 PM CST reply actions

We could sell Thomas Jones

On the fact that he could carry the majority of the load while we continue to allow JCharles to develop even more. Jones might want more than a split load to finish out his career that’s why i say that. And I think even with Charles come out party last year….we could satisfy both of these backs wishes….and in the next year or two Charles can continue to bulk up and prepare to get the majority of the load….

Take rb off the draft need list. That’s one more spot for drafting OL. Which would make that backfield arguably one of the best in the league!! I’m hot and bothered to see Charles/Jones behind and UPGRADED OLINE….. Would be huge!!

by KCLonghorn on Mar 5, 2010 1:35 PM CST reply actions

I don't know

I’d rather see Charles get 20-25 carries per game. I’d say he’s fully developed already based on his numbers last year.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Mar 5, 2010 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

Dunno

He seems to do a good job at avoiding hard hits. Definitely would like to see his carries in short yardage situations go somewhere else though.

This year will be better

But i don’t know if J.C will ever be a every down back.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 5, 2010 1:38 PM CST reply actions

Agree on great numbers last year...

I just feel TJ would be a bit more of a load given JC size?? So let’s get someone in here while we bulk up our speedster Charles!

Seems like it would be a great combo either way you look at it. Also, I’m looking at it as delaying Charles aging process in the league while keeping and using him on your roster. Once we up grade Charles contract…then we squeeze carries out of him:)

We can all agree we need to either pick up a back….or draft a “heavier” back in FA. Just a matter how we do it. Fun FUn

by KCLonghorn on Mar 5, 2010 1:42 PM CST reply actions

He is available because they have 2 other backs and don’t need 3 good back’s.

Those guys are debating whether they should take a RB with their 1st pick. They think that their RB is now a weak link.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 5, 2010 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

I suppose they were disappointed in what Shonne Green brings to the table...

If they are wanting to get rid of Thomas Jones, or Shonne Green I’m sure that Scott Pioli would definately be interested in passing on Mike Brown, or one of other ‘talented’ safetys. You know to round out there amazing Defensive Backfield.

Go Chiefs!!!!
