Chiefs Tender S Jarrad Page, Too

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended a tender to restricted free agent Jarrad Page, Bob Gretz of BobGretz.com reports. Page, 25, received the second round tender.

Not bad for a seventh round pick, right?

That's a one year deal worth $1.759 million for the fourth year safety.

Page ended the season on injured reserve so the new regime didn't get a good chance to see what he was all about. He's safe at a second round tender and considering the Chiefs depth at safety, I suspect he's got a roster spot heading into 2010.

That almost wraps it up for the Chiefs RFA class. We have reason to believe Croyle was tendered and will return to Kansas City (though we're not sure what level tender) and we haven't heard anything on LB Corey Mays.

Really happy

I loved the tandem with Pollard and Page, but I’d still like to have one if not the other. Page can be a good player, especially since we drafted him in the 7th.

Nice

We either get to keep him or get another 2nd in a deep draft. Win win in my book.

Would be nice to know officially on Croyle too. Not that worried about Mays either way.

Page has been a good player and he still has room to improve

and at the very least he will be a quality depth player

Calm down, please.

Predictions:

1) Fans will feel just scads better from mid-to-end of the 2010 season.
2) During the 2021 season, Ryan Succop will become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1469 points.

I really think we should try Page at SS next year

If we could get a grear coverage safety (Berry anyone?) to play at FS and slide Page to SS I think our coverage would really be improved. Page is 225 and can hit.

with Williams+Mays playing in front of them.

It's not like we're only getting one defensive player this off season.

I expect for the NT and OLB positions to be upgraded in some way, shape or form. Besides, Williams and Mays aren’t that bad.

They aren't that bad

as backups. As starters, yes, I hope we can upgrade.

by bh13 on Mar 4, 2010 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

Good analysis.

But, hey, putting up a shit ton of tackles as 34 ILBs with no true 34 NT in front of them shouldn’t really count for anything. By your own argument, ILBs benefit from the NTs in front of them… right? No sense in keeping them around and seeing what their play looks like with an upgraded NT.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

by Red N Gold Beast on Mar 4, 2010 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Would they look better with a dominant NT in front of them?

Sure. They’d upgrade their play from “god aweful” to “way below average”. Do I love having McGraw and Brown as our Safeties? No. But they’re much closer to being legit NFL starters than this garbage we’re rolling out at ILB.

This idea that we should spend a top 5 pick on the least important position in a 3-4 D when we’re completely talent starved is madness! madness I say!!!

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

lol.

I disagree. I just don’t think either of those guys are god awful.

How important is/was Polamalu to the Steelers’ 3-4? Hmmmmmm…….

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

by Red N Gold Beast on Mar 4, 2010 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

Polamalu is a hell of a player

but in the 2 years before he arrived, the Steelers D finished 3rd and 6th in the NFL. You see, the Steelers built a great front 7. Then they went for teh luxury of a 1st round S.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 7:45 PM CST up reply actions

But their defense suffered a huge blow when he went down this year.

The Steelers were 5-6 in games without Polamalu last year. With him, they were 4-1. Not to mention the previous season when they won a Super Bowl with him on the field. Ask Mike Tomlin if he thinks Polamalu is a “luxury” player.

True impact players make the whole team better, and if Berry lives up to his potential, he’ll be that kind of player. Personally, I’d like him to be that kind of player for the Chiefs.

by MtHammer on Mar 4, 2010 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

Actually

their D went in the tank when Aaron Smith went on IR.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

Those two combined for 202 tackles last year. Meanwhile our tackles by safeties dropped from 250 to 186. I would say if we want to improve the run defense get a real NT. If we want to improve the pass defense add some more pass rushers and guys that can cover in the secondary (like Berry). ILB could use upgraded, but it’s not the top priority.

So put that in your anti-Eric Berry pipe and smoke it.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

by KCporkchop on Mar 4, 2010 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

You aren't seriously judging the quality of our ILB play by those tackle numbers are you?

This just in. LBs benefit from the play of the DL in front of them. Safeties benefit from the play of the LBs in front of them. Drafting a Safety in the top 5 is ridiculous when you have a giganitc hold in the center of your D. We need NT more than ILB…we need ILB more than S. Hell we need OLB, WR and 2 OL more than S.

But ya’ll have your mancrush fun. Berry will not be a Chief. You see, they guys running the team actually understand football. ;)

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

And if there was a NT worth the #5 pick I'd be drinking the crap out of his Kool Aid

but there isn’t. McClain is a maybe for me. I don’t dislike him, but I’m not sure a 3-4 ILB is any more worthy of a top 5 pick then a S is. I’m clearly on the bandwagon that thinks Berry is another Ed Reed. To me it’s easier to find a solid ILB then it is an Ed Reed. If there was an OLB prospect worthy of the #5 I’d hear that argument, but I don’t see one. I don’t see Dez Bryant as a Haley guy at all. That leaves OL and I’m just not sold that Okung will be a big upgrade over Albert. I like the second round OL, WR, and NT options a lot better then I like the second round S options.

(mumbles to self) "tell me about who actually understands football.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

by KCporkchop on Mar 4, 2010 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

This is considered the deepest S draft ever

There will be very capable Safeties (which is all that’s required to make the 3-4 work) in the 4th round. If we don’t address the front 7 of our D and Ol problems, we could have the actual Ed Reed playing Safety and we’d still suck.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

I guess it really comes down to my opinion of Berry and Okung

I see Berry as a special player that only comes around every couple of years. I realize that there may be several other solid NFL starters available in rounds 2-3 but I just think he’s the type we’ll regret passing on. Okung on the other hand doesn’t strike me as that same type of talent as far as o-line goes. I think he’ll be good, but I’m not convinced that he’ll be much better then Albert or much better then the tackles available in round 2 for that matter. I’ll trust Pioli and our scouts though, so if they want to go Okung I’m sure I’ll get on board.

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

by KCporkchop on Mar 4, 2010 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

So at the #5 overall pick you'd rather have us take:

The 3rd best DT in the draft, or the #1 ranked LB (that probably isn’t worthy of being a top 10 pick), as opposed to picking the #1 DB that is considered by many to be a top 5 pick?

I don’t follow the logic here. Why can’t we get a solid free agent NT or LB? Why are we not able to draft a NT or LB with one of the 2nd round picks? They’ll still be an upgrade to the position, and we’ll make the value of our picks stretch more.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

Nope.

I’d take the best OL on the board.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

And I don't really disagree.

To be honest I’ll be happy with Okung or Berry.

Okung would be a great addition to LT, and it would help solidify our line by allowing us to secure the left side with two players that have a ton of upside.

Berry, IMO, is a sure fire thing as well. He’s been a consistent player his entire career. Not trying to brag, as I rarely call any player a sure fire thing, but when Flowers fell to us in the second round I about shat myself. I feel the same way about Berry, if not more so. IMO, Eric Berry is going to go down as one of the best safeties ever. He’s going to be in the same class as guys like Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, and Troy Polamalu.

And I won't freak if we take Berry

there are just bound to be a few better options. Haden would even do more for our D than Berry. CBs are much harder to find than a Safety.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 4, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

gotta figure ... we ARE gonna upgrade D side woth SOMEONE

either 1st or 2nd round, and maybe both (with OLine as other 2nd Round) … should they go for Okung in 1st (if he’s still there at #5) then most likely toss both 2nd’s at D side anyway

any way you slice it we HAVE to get better … both sides of the ball

True, there aren't.

But the consistency, intelligence and athleticism that Berry has shown throughout his career makes me pretty darn sure that he’s about as close to a sure fire thing as you can get.

I’m still sticking by the notion that play making, game changing safeties can elevate and bring out the best in a defense. Again I’ll mention guys like: Atwater, Lott, Polamalu, and Ed Reed. Safeties can be just as important to a defense as any NT, LB or CB.

And why can't we?

That’s the point I’m trying to make.

Where does it say that we can’t draft the next Polamalu because we don’t have a Casey Hampton? How did Polamalu’s supporting cast do without him? Not nearly as well as they did with him.

I’m not saying we should draft him and then be done with the D. Not by any means.

Sheesh. It’s obvious neither of us will budge on this (I’m talking to you Satch) so I’m dropping it. We’ll see what happens on 4/22. You guys have a good night, I’m heading home.

by Red N Gold Beast on Mar 4, 2010 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

The reason is simple

You don’t NEED the great S to be a great D. You do need the great front 7. There are countless examples of top 5 Ds not having great or even above average Safeties. There are no examples of a great Safety propelling a D to elite status without having a great front 7.

Sorry, I missed the key words "propelling a D to elite status".

Regardless, since the goal is to have an all around good team, it doesn’t matter to me if we take a great secondary player now or wait until we shuffle through enough guys to get the right front 7. Berry would be a great addition to this team, and combined with the right moves this offseason (thazt we HAVE to make), him and an improved front 7 will make this team alot better.

I’d rather have one of the best safeties to come out of college in the last 5 years than to have an average OL, LB or CB prospect. I’m just sayin.
