Report: Seahawks WR Nate Burleson On The Chiefs Radar

Update: Burleson has signed with the Detroit Lions.

Seattle Seahawks WR Nate Burleson will become an unrestricted free agent as of 11:01 PM (CST) this evening.  According to the National Football Post, the Kansas City Chiefs will be keeping an eye on him.

Star-divide

National Football Post has learned that Burleson is on the radar of the following teams: the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He could also potentially re-sign with Seattle depending on what kind of offers he garners when the free agent signing period begins after midnight.

NFP also speculates -- but doesn't cite sources -- that the Washington Redskins (of course) and Cincinnati Bengals could be in the mix considering their roster moves today.

Last season he caught 63 passes for 812 yards and three touchdowns.

Burleson, 28, was a third round draft pick by the Vikings in 2003.  In 2006 he moved to the Seattle Seahawks with a $49 million contract. His career best season came in 2004, his second in the NFL, catching 68 balls for 1,006 yards and nine touchdowns.

Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has said on numerous occasions that the receiver position will be looked at very closely in free agency and the draft.

let me rephrase...please no

If they intend on him being the #2 or slot receiver. 4th WR then im fine. Dont spend big bucks on these non difference maker players

do it

solid #3-#4 wr with return skills. Has to be better than Wade. Only 28 but a little injury history. Could come at good price. Obviously not the answer but Burleson, KWalters or Chambers will be on the Chiefs next yr.

Good return man and on the right side of 30. nice signing if we do it.

by dablueguy on Mar 4, 2010 4:38 PM CST reply actions

solid

not that bad of a signing, but he will probably end up back in seattle cause NO team will overpay for him, the chiefs want a bargin, which he will not be

I'd be ok with Burleson ... maybe not THE BEST out there, but far from the worst

depth is key!

Just saw that L Betts, rb from Skins was cut. Another good addition. Iwant a vet rb to add to the lineup. A vet wr like Burleson, boldin, Chambers, Walters.

Nice

I’ve always liked Betts, wouldn’t be a bad addition.

by bh13 on Mar 4, 2010 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

ps

I’ve been hearing that many teams will wait to sign vets until after the draft. So, we may have to be patient.

If the price is right on these pre-30yr old guys

Sign them up. No more 40yr old WR and LB.

Let’s get these good priced “younger” FA that could be some key hole fillers.

We've already got two solid #2 receivers.

It seems like he’s another solid #2. If we’re looking for depth, go for it, pick up Burleson. But that doesn’t stop us from needing a solid threat; a legit number 1 receiver. We need Boldin or someone of his caliber if the staff really feels we need to upgrade our WR unit.

this is the time of year

when we sign a tyler palko and a lot of people on other sites say “wow, we’re really winning the super bowl now”(in sarcasm font) but really we have so many holes that I would be fine with nate because our WR’s are so incredibly AWFUL…
seriously go look at our roster and tell me that ANYONE we sign that played in the league last year wouldnt have a shot in KC talent wise.

Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.

For depth

we might be better off getting the vet players now, while other teams wait. We need depth and experience. Vrabel might not play a full season, but his knowledge of a 3-4 will be invaluable to whomever takes his spot.

I like L. Betts as a backup to Charles, when he did have a line and was a starter, he was affective. I can see Betts used as a 3rd down back as well.

by DizzyKC on Mar 4, 2010 4:54 PM CST reply actions

If we even had

a half decent receiving corps i would say def not, but the guys we have no just stink. I can’t recall if he has problems with drops but if he doesn’t then its an upgrade. Let Darling go and get him, thats upgrade #1 of this offseason.

by RamX21 on Mar 4, 2010 4:57 PM CST reply actions

At this point all I can say is "Why not?". He has shown the ability to actually catch a ball.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

stats

You’re telling me you wouldnt take his 60+ rec 800+ yards and 3+ td’s because he misses a few games a yr? I may blame some of that on turf-He’s been in Minn and Seattle. But his numbers are decent. If he goes down you bring in QLawrence or Long for a few games. Not that big of a deal.

That's what I'm thinking...

It would be cool to see Shipley in a Chief uniform. Smart, tough player. The right “fit”, right?

I have played an excellent role as the needy bitch during my relationship with the Chiefs. I understand why some women never leave their dick boyfriends.

The thought of players from Seattle

leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I fear a Bobby Engram, round 2.

yep

thats how I feel also, and this guy wants money, 30 years old, no thanks, PASS

by Chiefs3188 on Mar 4, 2010 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

Bobby Engram was a totally done player and about 8 years older. Burleson has plenty left and is also a good returner. He’d basically be replacing Bobby Wade, the human fair catch, and THAT’S a good thing.

by dablueguy on Mar 4, 2010 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

pffttt!!

…average kick returner and an average receiver…I`d rather have Kevin Walter and draft somebody to return kicks in the later rounds…
As long as they get Chester Taylor I`m happy :) Suppose I`d better goto bed now and set my alarm for 5am ready for free agency before work…come on Chiefs spend some money on QUALITY!!!!!!

Interesting to see what Seahawks fans think:

http://www.fieldgulls.com/2010/3/3/1335414/seahawks-can-win-free-agency-by

He had his best year in 2009 in spite of recovering from a torn ACL, and this article suggests Seattle should have franchised him.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

this sounds like

another amani toomer bobby engram type deal to me

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

by BEEf_CHIEF on Mar 4, 2010 5:57 PM CST reply actions

People keep saying that, and I don't get it.

They use the same excuse for why we shouldn’t take a chance on veteran linemen, only with “Mike Goff” in place of “Engram/Toomer” as though those examples are proof that the chiefs should never sign another veteran over 30. I have to ask, how far did signing Engram, Wade, Toomer, Goff, Thomas, etc. really set the back Chiefs last year? They didn’t work out, so they were cut or pushed down the depth chart. It’s not like they cost us an arm and a leg.

Now what about Chris Chambers? There were a lot of people saying that he probably had nothing left in the tank when the Chiefs claimed him. Would you honestly give up hitting on the Chambers signing to avoid missing on the previous ones? Only one or two of these players need to pan out occasionally to make it worthwhile, as long as we aren’t signing these guys to expensive multiyear deals.

If we don’t mortgage the farm to sign Burleson, why not take a chance on him? If he gets hurt or is terrible, he can be cut or benched and any more talented receivers we have will take his place. If he’s great, everyone will talk about how they though it was a great signing from the very beginning.

by MtHammer on Mar 4, 2010 8:19 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't mind

Burleson, but like others, I worry about injuries. I’d prefer a guy like Randel El to go with Chambers and Bowe. Plus, Randel El can give us some returns right?

by KCMizzou on Mar 4, 2010 9:20 PM CST reply actions

What about???

Trading our 3rd for Boldin and drafting Gilyard or Shippley to return AND play slot? Not against Burleson, but if Boldin’s available at the same age and offers higher production…talk about a dream come true.
